I have seen some critical views on Nostr as a part of decentralized network discussions, but most seem to be focused on culture not function.

What are the functional / protocol differences that make you prefer ActivityPub over Nostr?

My dad called me one last week. I told him I'm not even a communist, just a moderate social democrat who likes Soviet symbols for the shock value. (Not true, I'm a Marxist-Leninist, but gotta keep the peace with family, IYKYK.) But now I'm wondering, is "Stalinism" even a thing? Are any of you bears "Stalinists"?

Fewer than 60,000 people – 0.001% of the world’s population – control three times as much wealth as the entire bottom half of humanity, according to a report that argues global inequality has reached such extremes that urgent action has become essential.

The authoritative World Inequality Report 2026, based on data compiled by 200 researchers, also found that the top 10% of income-earners earn more than the other 90% combined, while the poorest half captures less than 10% of total global earnings.

Wealth – the value of people’s assets – was even more concentrated than income, or earnings from work and investments, the report found, with the richest 10% of the world’s population owning 75% of wealth and the bottom half just 2%.

In almost every region, the top 1% was wealthier than the bottom 90% combined, the report found, with wealth inequality increasing rapidly around the world.

“The result is a world in which a tiny minority commands unprecedented financial power, while billions remain excluded from even basic economic stability,” the authors, led by Ricardo Gómez-Carrera of the Paris School of Economics, wrote.

A man in Atlanta has been arrested and charged for allegedly deleting data from a Google Pixel phone before a member of a secretive Customs and Border Protection (CBP) unit was able to search it, according to court records and social media posts reviewed by 404 Media. The man, Samuel Tunick, is described as a local Atlanta activist in Instagram and other posts discussing the case. The exact circumstances around the search—such as why CBP wanted to search the phone in the first place—are not known. The indictment says the phone search was supposed to be performed by a supervisory officer from a CBP Tactical Terrorism Response Team. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) wrote in 2023 these are “highly secretive units deployed at U.S. ports of entry, which target, detain, search, and interrogate innocent travelers.” “These units, which may target travelers on the basis of officer ‘instincts.’ raise the risk that CBP is engaging in unlawful profiling or interfering with the First Amendment-protected activity of travelers,” the ACLU added. The Intercept previously covered the case of a sculptor and installation artist who was detained at San Francisco International Airport and had his phone searched. The report said Gach did not know why, even years later. Court records show authorities have since released Tunick, and that he is restricted from leaving the Northern District of Georgia as the case continues. The prosecutor listed on the docket did not respond to a request for comment. The docket did not list a lawyer representing Tunick.

Brazil's Chamber of Deputies approved a bill early Wednesday morning aimed at reducing prison sentences for coup plotters , including former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro , who was sentenced to 27 years in prison last September.

The bill , which must now go to the Senate for discussion and eventual approval , was endorsed by 291 votes in favor, 148 against and one abstention.

The legislation proposes that the sentences for two of the crimes for which the former president was convicted (2019-2022), namely the attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law and the coup d'état, should not be combined.

If finally approved, only the more severe of the two penalties would be applied, in this case the one for coup d'état , which provides for up to 12 years in prison and which would not be added to the penalty for attempted violent abolition, which establishes up to eight years in prison.

The law proposes reducing the penalty from one-third to two-thirds when coup-related crimes are committed as part of a "mob ," as happened in the assault by hundreds of Bolsonaro supporters on the headquarters of the Executive, Congress and the Supreme Court in Brasilia, the country's capital, on January 8, 2023.

According to Congressman Paulo Pereira da Silva, who introduced the bill, Bolsonaro could leave the regime closed in just over two years .

The legislator argued that the measure seeks "reconciliation" and wishes to "correct the excesses" in the sentences imposed by the Supreme Court, but "without avoiding accountability."

The leader of the deputies of the ruling Workers' Party (PT), Lindbergh Farias, rejected the bill and argued that "this chamber is embracing a coup."

A general question that happens to be my predicament at current. I'm a general safety admin/manager that has automated most of my tasks(emails/excel sheets)

Most days I doomscroll fediverse and lurk irc/matrix channels on the work desktop but am curious about more practical or useful things I should be doing instead. It's looking like this will be my life for a good while since job market is abysmal and promotions are hyperstagnate(have also hit a wall in improving my scripts). If anyone has any similar experiences, please share and advise, as I feel quite lost and trapped :/
