Summary

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed dozens of members from key Pentagon advisory boards in a sweeping move to reshape defense policymaking.

In a memo, Hegseth addressed the widespread dismissal of former officials, industry leaders, academics and researchers in science and engineering.

The Pentagon needs "fresh thinking to drive bold changes," Hegseth claimed. The scale of Hegseth's clear-out is unprecedented, the Wall Street Journal reported. Elon Musk praised the "reset.”

Hegseth has accused some terminated employees of providing the press with information regarding a Signal group chat in which Hegseth sent sensitive information.

Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have sat down for a face-to-face talk in the opulent halls of a Vatican basilica to discuss a possible ceasefire, after which the US president accused his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, of not wanting to “stop the war”.

The White House described Trump’s meeting with the Ukrainian leader before Pope Francis’s funeral as “very productive”, while Zelenskyy said on X that the talk with the US president was symbolic and had the “potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results”.

It was the first time that Zelenskyy and Trump had met face to face after a frosty February encounter in the White House where Trump and the US vice-president, JD Vance, berated the Ukrainian leader and accused him of ingratitude for US aid.

Skype, the online video-calling service, is shutting down in May after more than two decades of service. For those of a certain generation, Skype changed everything.

Before it launched in 2003, making international calls 📱 was prohibitively expensive and few viable digital alternatives existed. Skype offered users a cheap and easy way to call anyone in the world, skirting the draconian landline industry. When Skype added video calls a few years later, it felt as if the future had arrived: Students used Skype to stay connected to families back home 🤙, international friendships were born 🤝, and a generation of cross-border relationships began ❤️ — or ended 💔 — over the service. By the late 2000s, Skype was so ubiquitous that its name became a verb, much like Xerox and Google. Its bouncy ringtones and audio notifications were iconic. 🎶

At its peak, Skype had about 300 million users around the world. But it was a product of the desktop era, and as users went mobile, Skype lost its edge to upstarts like WhatsApp and FaceTime. Today, the app is forgotten on most phones and computers, particularly in the West. ⏰

The platform still has dedicated pockets of users in countries like Turkey, Russia, India, and the Philippines, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. “Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments,” Microsoft said in a blog post announcing its imminent shutdown. 😴

Before Skype goes the way of other early internet icons like AOL Instant Messenger and Friendster, Rest of World readers shared their favorite memories of the service. Here are their stories. 🙇

If you truly love your partner, does a ring and a ceremony really do anything?

I know there are certain legal situations where an official marriage changes who has certain rights, but aren't those same rights available if you make other legally-official decisions E.G. a will or trusts, etc?

I'm generally curious why people get married beyond the "because I love them" when it costs so much money.

The Pope's fucking dead.

He gave JD Vance three chocolate easter eggs, exchanged pleasantries for 17 minutes, and then keeled over and died.

What a way to go.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Trump warned he will impose additional tariffs on the European Union and Canada if they band together to “do economic harm” against the United States.

Get @#$%ed, Trump. Good read. Short but detailed about how partnered we are already and what our next priorities should be

For some background, one of my other friends, I’ll call her Penny (19F) was dealing with her dad with NPD. I looked for some advice on a subreddit called r/raisedbynarcissists. That’s when I believe what happened is that I asked something about narcissistic parents, and Jaiden (24F) shared her story in the comments. I felt really bad for her and decided to help her out and talk to her.

She then asked me if we could talk in the Reddit DMs. I said yes and she then asked me if I have Discord. We now talk on Discord and I was shadowbanned on Reddit for some reason. (Anyway, I use Lemmy now, which has a much better community besides certain jerks and trolls which you’ll find on any somewhat large platform).

Since this was a while ago, we’ve talked a lot since then and she’s dealt with a lot. For starters, she’s Asian and lives in a very traditional Filipino community with Chinese heritage. Her entire family is not only traditional, but abusive, narcissistic, and neo-Nazis who support eugenics and Hitler. [I find it odd that Filipinos of Chinese descent would be this way but people are very strange.]

While stuck in her parents’ house being BEATEN, she can’t do much about her situation. While stuck in the house, she is incredibly motivated and wants to do all these things. Not only does she have a very long list of things, but she wants to become famous and good at EVERYTHING all at once, surpass her friends (who are either extremely talented or celebrities) and be the greatest person ever.

She always asks me if I think she’ll be the greatest person in the world, so I say yes. I don’t want to discourage her. Plus, I can’t predict the future. She may well become the greatest in the world. I know she’ll become very depressed and angry if I say no, and it’s simply rude.

I don’t know what to do or how to help besides comfort her. I don’t know how she can achieve her goal of becoming the greatest ever either.

In recent months, Elon Musk’s DOGE has attempted to hollow out America’s federal bureaucracy. After firing droves of workers and attempting to downsize prominent agencies, the billionaire-backed effort is attempting to create a new governance model that prioritizes automation.

On Friday, Wired reported that, in a flailing attempt to modernize the agency, a new ChatGPT-style bot was integrated into agency staffers’ workflows.

The Agency Support Companion is supposed to “assist employees with everyday tasks and enhance productivity,” an internal email viewed by the magazine reads. However, the chatbot does not seem to work very well. “Honestly, no one has really been talking about it at all,” a source who works at the agency told Wired.

Like you'll need to hide everything new you got into in fear he'll yell at you or humiliate you for buying a new game or watching a new show, or even wearing a new shirt. Would you hide that you still celebrate Halloween, Christmas, birthdays, etc despite not being a little kid? Is it normal to go by keyspam usernames and be as anonymous as possible to avoid being found online by your friend as he'll post private information or hate on all of your posts? While also seeming like the asshole because you're being secretive for no reason?

The birth of the new-type multi-mission destroyer, which is an ensemble of the state economy and an aggregate of self-reliant defence technology and which is equipped with the powerful cutting-edge strike weapon systems of the Korean style which do not allow comparison, is a brilliant fruition of the iron faith and will and outstanding leadership of the great Comrade Kim Jong Un, who indicated the path for rapidly developing the naval force of the DPRK into a powerful treasured sword for defending justice and peace and a service equipped with the comprehensive fighting power with nuclear weapons as the main axis and is dynamically steering the rejuvenation of the warship-building industry, and a valuable victory won by the strong aspiration and indomitable advance of the Korean people to outpace the world with the conviction in their own strength and courageous struggle.

In particular, I'm referring to the people who would be redditors, but don't really use English. All the main Reddit subs are filled with English, and the few outposts on Reddit that mainly are not English are relatively small. This leads me to believe that such speakers must be going somewhere else for their Reddit-esque needs.

A few locations I'm already aware of:

  • South Korea uses arca.live
  • Japan uses LINE
  • The PRC uses Baidu Tieba
  • Russia uses Pikabu and VK

Do any of you know of any other non-English Reddit equivalents? I'm interested in how countries outside the US handle their social media.
