As the U.S.’s extremist blockade on Cuba pushes the country to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) has said that the world has entered a “new era of depravity” in which such actions are ignored by world powers due to the heinous precedent set by the Gaza genocide. “This is what we’ve seen with Gaza — this is a new era of depravity opened up…

The Israeli Prison Service has begun preparations to introduce the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

According to Israel's Channel 13, preparations include the creation of a facility dubbed "Israel's Green Mile", where executions will take place

The report added that executions will be carried out by hanging, with three guards pressing the trigger simultaneously.

Specialist teams, composed entirely of volunteers, will be assigned to the task.

A day after being sentenced to 20 years in prison under Hong Kong’s national security law, the former newspaper magnate Jimmy Lai faces a painful dilemma [...] diplomats believe that Beijing is open to the possibility of releasing Lai early to avoid making him a political martyr if he were to die in prison.

[...]

China would almost certainly want a guarantee that Lai would not use liberty in Britain as a platform for criticism of the Hong Kong and Beijing authorities. How they could be reassured of this is not clear. But the key question is what Lai himself wants and whether he would really exchange freedom to speak out for freedom from prison.

Researchers have proposed a new ethical framework to regulate emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, used to decode animal communication, Ana Cristina Alvarado reports for Mongabay Latam.

The proposed guidelines, known as the PEPP Framework, which stands for Prepare, Engage, Prevent and Protect, lay out the principles for studying animal communication responsibly. Scientists at the More than Human Life Program (MOTH) at New York University and the Cetacean Translation Initiative (CETI) warn that poorly regulated research can cause harm to animals.

“Even routine recording and playback can cause stress in animals,” CETI founder David Gruber told Alvarado by email.

In one documented case, researchers studying elephant communication played a recorded call from an individual that had already died, causing significant distress to the elephants that heard its call. The elephant family went wild calling and looking around for their dead relative. The dead elephant’s daughter called for days afterward.

AppImages are portable Linux applications packaged in a single file that you can download and run without installation. Unlike DEB or RPM packages, they don't require root access or system-level changes. You just make the file executable and double-click to run.

But here's the catch. AppImages don't actually install on your system in the traditional sense. They exist as standalone executables that you have to manage manually. There's no automatic desktop integration, no system menu entries, and no built-in update mechanism.

This way, you are stuck manually making files executable, going through folders to launch apps, and checking for updates yourself.

That is where AppManager comes in. This is a tool that handles all that tedious legwork for you.

I’ve noticed that all of the channels I follow have mysteriously not posted in two weeks when usually I get a dozen videos per week in my peertube subscription thing.

wondering if this is a coincidence or something is up with the server?

Super cold in the Northeast US..

Plumber removed a backroom sink a few months ago.. A sink that tapped directly into a blackwater line under a toilet. Apparently, one of the days - or overnights most likely - when the temp went well below zero farenheits.. the drain line under the floorboards froze and the inevitable happened.

I got to clean it up.

Oh, the joys of being the "property-manager/fixit girl" (that literally lives around the block) for a small business.

Welp, at least I'm the least disposable in the company, as when shit like this happens, no one else wants to tackle it, so I suppose that's good...

FML.
