I made a book (hexbear.net)

I finally got around to making my own book. Its for my wife to introduce her to ML.

It looks really ~~janky~~ rustic and I hope it holds together well but we'll see I guess. Unfortunately I was careless with the glue in when sticking the text block to the cover and so it looks really dirty.

I typeset it myself in LaTeX then printed it on regular A4 copy paper, which unfortunately has the wrong grain direction since I want to fold it but finding proper paper is impossible. I'm going to buy a huge roll of paper and cut it myself next time probably since its rather cheap actually, like 20€ for a roll of 0.61x50m A1 paper.

Bound it with the cheapest linen thread, waxed with paraffin because I still dont know of a good beeswax alternative, glued the spine with regular white craft glue. The tapes are really thin linen gauze. I got the boards from the back of notebooks and glued it all together with corn starch. I think this whole book of 300 pages = 125 sheets cost less than a euro since its basically paper, toner, some thread, some gauze and a few grams of corn starch. Oh and the wrapping is some brown packing paper.

I'm hoping to make a couple books like this so I get a library going but I dont know if I'll bind it on board again or just glue it on some carton. It's a lot more effort to glue it on board and they're still warped despite all my efforts.

I'm thinking of printing the covers on 120gsm cardboard and gluing them together over the spine basically thread the linen gauze through the back cover and glue it on, then glue the front cover so the tapes are sealed. then I could just tip the textblock on the covers and it would cause that much warp. Dunno yet though. First I gotta typeset "Imperialsm, the highest stage of capitalism", which is next on the list.

Beim torlosen Remis zwischen Werder Bremen und St. Pauli passiert auf dem Rasen recht wenig. Im Stadion geht es dafür sehr politisch zu.

Free and open-source software is now going strong with extremely popular and even industry standard products. However with fame always comes abuse which unfortunately affected FOSS as well.

In recent times we saw separate political decisions by big FOSS companies/teams such as the Linux kernel development team prohibiting citizens of Russia to contribute to the project, as well as general rise of political (specifically aggressive left and ultraleft leaning) drama and discussions in the space.

This makes me believe that the situation is only going to get worse. I can't be sure if projects will start implementing restrictions on their use (therefore switching to a model that is not considered free and open-source) but it's clear that contributions will likely and increasingly continue to be affected. This may cause all kinds of issues, up to addition of malicious code that starts on certain (and obviously unreasonable) triggers.

A complete death of the free and open-source model is practically impossible. There will always be people making their code truly free (as in freedom), at least for a limited time. Though when it comes to big players, their free future is at a significant risk.

"But I can always fork it!" - sure you can and your project might even gain solid ground but the political issues will remain, both for you and your contributors.

"Then how do I fix it?" - it's simple - keep unrelated politics away from your and others' projects and don't ban contributors who have political activity of any kind outside your projects, even if you disagree with them. Also create a separate account on social media for all politics-related discussions. Do not use your developer account or especially your project's official account.

¿Quién ha dicho que las energías renovables no puedan aportar inercia a la red?

Saved this comment from somewhere, probably Reddit:

I've actually been using the cars analogy for a couple months now and I think it's very fitting. Imagine if you were a mechanic who owned an auto shop and your average customer call went something like this:

Customer: My car isn't working and I need you to fix it immediately, this is an emergency
Mechanic: Alright sir what seems to be the problem?
Customer: I don't know, I tried to use my car on friday and it didn't work, now it's monday and I need to get to work and I can't and this needs to be fixed right now.
Mechanic: Can you start the car? Can you even get into your car? Does it make any sounds when you try to start it? Are all 4 tires there?
Customer: I don't know, I don't know what any of that stuff means, I tried to get to work and it wouldn't let me and you need to fix it now because you changed my oil 6 months ago.
Mechanic: Alright well what kind of car are you driving?
Customer: I don't know, a green one, why does that matter?
Mechanic: Please take a look at the back of your car and see if there are any letters or numbers that would indicate a vehicle model or manufacturer
Customer: Ok, my car is a SV2 87K.
Mechanic: No sir that's your license plate. My records indicate that you drive a Nissan Altima, can you confirm that the key you're using to try and get into this car says Nissan on it?
Customer: My key says Lexus but I don't see how that makes a difference, I've been using this key on this car for years and it's always worked, what did you do to my car?

This release is done to flush all the changes I had made before my "break" from the app.

This is a minor release. Most of the changes for this release are bug fixes.

Full changelog

  • Fix more issues with cards with clipped shadows.
  • Fix a bug where the home item in the side panel displays the wrong home feed.
  • Fix a bug where an instance mismatch message is shown even if there is no mismatch.
  • Fix a bug where the left pane sometimes interferes with the options bar in the post feed header if the options bar can be scrolled.
  • Rename the mod action "Feature comment" to "Mark important"
  • Fix a bug where opening a link if the app is not open will not open the link correctly.
  • Minor improvements to server error messages.
  • Fix a bug where tapping on the comments count on the "You" screen does not show the comments for the current account.
  • Fix a bug where tapping the current selected item in the navigation bar will break navigation, causing some subtle bugs.
  • Fix a bug where the lock icon for locked posts is clipped.

Hello! I am back starting tomorrow.

First thoughts from looking over the app is I am probably going to table the preset work for the time being. It's been a long time since the last release and I fear that the preset work still needs more time.

Instead of continuing on the preset work, I think it would make more sense to work on it slowly over time as I work on addressing things in the roadmap. The roadmap has grown extremely large so I want to keep it from growing out of control.

Will probably aim for a release in the coming days just to push out some fixes for now.
