Ok, so this is not one for those of you who live in apartments. For those who tend to a garden, particularly one visited by local wildlife, please be tolerant. They are trying to survive on the land which for hundreds of thousands (millions) of years was theirs.

They may be a bit of a nuisance but more often than not they are providing what is now known as 'ecological services' (pity they're not unionised). For example, I get bandicoots where I live and they make parts of the garden look like swiss cheese as they make little holes in search for grubs. What's the service in this? They aerate the soil and create little craters which fill up when it rains so that there is less run-off and more moisture for plants over a longer period of time. Thank you bandies!

The article is from Sth Australia but the situations are similar in many parts of Oz. If you have any stories about your local wildlife and how you solved challenges without the use of harmful chemicals and so on, please share. If you live outside of Oz and have stories, please share them too.

Hi again threadiverse! sorry for not sharing artworks here for the past few weeks, I was unable to post on the community, it seems that piefed hates me.

The account is a day old so I can't see how I could possibly already have broken the rules. I have another account on piefed.social that I've had for a while and I didn't get banned in all that time. Any ideas what it could have been?

These "makeshift" structures are housing hardware that costs millions of dollars in total.

"Putting AI servers inside tents, officially called “rapid deployment structures,” is one of the more unique approaches to the AI build-out, Thomas said. They’re certainly not as sturdy as physical buildings made from steel and concrete, with one commenter comparing it to the “classic $10k racing bike with a $9 lock” situation."

Hello lemmings, I made a program to ping every IPv4 address and collect data on respondents. I am almost done, but I want feedback on things I should change or how I can improve my current record of 5,000 pings / second.

I am currently aware that I need to properly parse the data I receive on the receive socket, since it's possible the TTL router messages might be confused as replies. ICMP is used on networks to inform other machines of network problems.

One issue I'm aware of is the tuning that has to go into maximizing throughput while also avoiding a total system freeze. My code seems to spend too much time opening sockets that it leaves no room for the actual OS. My only fix currently is limiting the CPU time to the ping timeout I used.

The overall program works like this: It keeps a linked list / pool of task objects. All objects are initially in the "free list" and then when they become associated with a socket, they move to the "active list". The program first checks for updated sockets with epoll which results in like 5% of sockets giving a response. It then closes any tasks that have timed out via linked list in O(1) each. The slow part is when it creates new sockets, since it doesn't really know when to stop, besides when the non-blocking socket informs it that it would block. I implemented a time limit on sending that is currently the maximum of the ping timeout. To increase throughput it seems like I need to streamline how I send ICMP packets.

Scenario: you're using opensource software and you aren't donating yet, however you have enough money left over every month to do so. Something(s) is holding you back from donating. Think about what that is and what would have to change for you to change that.

Organized crime groups are behind grocery store theft across Canada

The Retail Council of Canada is calling grocery store theft a national crisis, with losses now approaching $10 billion annually across the grocery sector and it’s only growing.

Honestly it sounds more like a crisis for the retail council of Canada rather than a national crisis.

“Eastern European organized crime has certainly been involved, and this isn’t just a big city problem, it’s happening straight across the country,” says CTV News crime specialist, Mark Mendelson.

It’s Canada so of course they’re going to be racist about it as well.

Watch out, Canadians. Eastern Europeans are causing a national crisis by taking advantage of our assault on labor.

“People are running away, going to a car right away and giving that product to whoever’s in the car, in exchange for something. Its either drugs or money,” according to Ottawa Police Chief, Eric Stubbs

Eastern European drug addicts.

This month, Guelph police arrested a man who they claim swapped out expensive products for cheaper ones at self-checkouts. Police claim that the individual in question, would scan items that cost less than one dollar, in exchange for baby formula priced at $97 dollars each.

BABY FORMULA COSTS $97 FUCKING DOLLARS????

They’re right, this is a national crisis.

Just last August, in Windsor, Ont. more than $220,000 worth of beef was stolen from a parked tractor trailer. The large-scale heist is another example of lucrative grocery crimes on the rise.

There are differing opinions on where items like black market beef are ending up. Mendelson and others who spoke to CTV News believe that some restaurants struggling to turn a profit are likely purchasing stolen goods. In some cases, smaller grocery stores and restaurants might not even realize they’re purchasing stolen food for their establishments.

Yeah sure they don’t realize this. They’re honest businessmen, buying misc meat off the back of a trailer in an alley. They wouldn’t be the “organized” part of this crime. Actually, they’re victims.
