The Trump administration denied Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ request for individual and public assistance following an outbreak of severe storms and tornadoes that also affected neighboring Mississippi and Missouri and left more than 40 people dead.

The denial follows executive orders signed by Trump seeking to shift the burden of disaster response and recovery from the federal government onto states, as extreme weather becomes increasingly destructive and costly in a warming world.

The denial of the request, dated April 11, said the Trump administration had “determined that the damage from this event was not of such severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the state, affected local governments, and voluntary agencies. Accordingly, we have determined that supplemental federal assistance is not necessary.”

64% of the state voted for Trump.

Hope their bootstraps survived the carnage.

From Decaturish:

AVONDALE ESTATES, Ga — The Avondale Estates City Commission is considering setting limits on mayor and commissioners’ screen time during meetings. During the work session on April 23, commissioners discussed a resolution banning themselves from using electronic devices during public meetings. The proposed ban covers phones, laptops, and tablets.  The prohibition comes amid concerns that some […]

Windows 10

I started my journey with Thunderbird (Windows 10):

-No feature configuration options -No full text option -Dropped

Then I discovered the Raven Reader:

-Best interface -No longer maintained -No full text feature -Dropped

Next, I found RSSGuard:

-Provides the "full text" feature which is a must for me -More configurable features -Regularly maintained -Still the best option for me for now

Android

I started with FocusReader:

-Full text feature, which is a must for me -Many other features -Regularly maintained -Still the best option for me for now

I also discovered the RSS Reader feature of a podcast player (PodcastRepublic):

-Always provides the "full text" function which is a must for me -No options to configure the RSS Reader or add features -As an RSS feed reader, it has no updates or configuration options -I have been using it primarily as a podcast player, with the RSS Reader as a bonus -I wish the RSS Reader configuration could be added to accommodate additional features

YOUR ideal RSS Readers ? and why?

The EU has an income inequality of 0,29 gini. That's the lowest of any major area in the world.

This is achieved by having high taxation, primarily on labour, and redistributing it to fund (primarily) public goods and services. Such as education and healthcare.

Why would your system be better than the mixed economy of the EU?

Carl Sagan was a humanist who strived to teach science as a way of thinking and interpreting the world. His 1995 book The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark was a kind of message he left to humanity before he died of cancer.

Scientists on Survival: Personal Stories of Climate Action by Scientists for XR

Published March 27, 2025

Up until recently, many climate scientists have felt deeply worried but unable to speak out. This book brings together the stories of 24 scientists who each individually decided they could no longer keep quiet. Rage, grief and frustration are part of these journeys, but readers will take comfort from knowing they are not alone. This is a very personal book which will hopefully inspire more scientists (and others) to take the leap and become climate activists. Foreword by Chris Packham.
