It was literally like that. I had a script of about 310 lines and the main function was like 10-20 lines of code. I had a very nice Setup of objects that handled all functionality possible behaviours independent and so my main function was just receiving a user input from another function and add accordingly which included like 3-4 different scenarios that are being handled in the main function.

Public servants with Global Affairs Canada (GAC) who have been teleworking full-time for the past several years from cities such as Montreal are now being required to work in offices in the National Capital Region.

The workers were hired before or during the COVID-19 pandemic to work remotely, and some say they’re being forced to resign because they can't relocate.

"I’m angry," said one employee in French whose identity Radio-Canada agreed to protect because they fear reprisal from the employer.

Like others who spoke to Radio-Canada, the public servant said their family and personal circumstances make it difficult for them to move to the Ottawa-Gatineau region, nor can they commute there three or more times a week.

Rosa Luxemburg

“If indeed the socialist commonwealth were an impossibility, then mankind would be cut off from all further economic development. In that event modern society would decay, as did the Roman empire nearly two thousand years ago, and finally relapse into barbarism.

“As things stand today capitalist civilization cannot continue; we must either move forward into socialism or fall back into barbarism.”:rosa:

Born in southeastern Poland on 5 March 1871, Rosa Luxemburg was a towering figure of the classical socialist movement— a brilliant thinker, sharp-tongued rhetorician, and trailblazing leader of the proletarian cause. The famed socialist historian and journalist Franz Mehring once called her the “best brain after Marx”. Her comrade and dear friend Clara Zetkin described her as the “sharp sword, the living flame of revolution”. Even Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin, with whom she often clashed, was compelled to acknowledge her status as an “eagle” of the Communist movement, at least in retrospect.

“Democracy is indispensable to the working class, because only through the exercise of its democratic rights, in the struggle for democracy, can the proletariat become aware of its class interests and its historic task.”:rosa:

She was, by all accounts, a truly unique figure. A Jew, a Polish woman, physically disabled and politically an irreconcilable Marxist—the obstacles to her pursuing her aims in life were legion, yet she rose to become one of the paramount leaders of the largest and strongest socialist movement in the Western world, German Social Democracy. In her short but brilliant career, she locked horns with the Prussian military elite several times and spoke as equals with Karl Kautsky, August Bebel, Victor Adler, and many other leading lights of socialism. As a political agitator she rallied masses of workers against capitalism and imperialist warfare, while also challenging Marxist orthodoxy as both a theorist and instructor at the Social Democratic party school in Berlin.

Yet since being cut down by proto-fascist thugs in January 1919, Luxemburg has been memorialized as a martyr for the revolution and a symbol of the tragic highs and lows of Germany’s twentieth century more than anything else. While her name and image remains iconic, her prodigious intellectual output and many contributions to socialist theory, have often been reduced to footnotes.

“Freedom only for the members of the government, only for the members of the Party – though they are quite numerous – is no freedom at all. Freedom is always the freedom of the one who thinks differently. Not because of any fanatical concept of justice, but because all that is instructive, wholesome and purifying in political freedom depends on this essential characteristic, and its effectiveness vanishes when ‘freedom’ becomes a special privilege.”

Karl Liebknecht

Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871, was a German socialist politician and theorist. Originally associated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Liebknecht later became a co-founder with Rosa Luxemburg of both the Spartacus League and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Liebknecht is also known for his outspoken opposition to World War I.

The main enemy of the German people is in Germany: German imperialism, the German war party, German secret diplomacy. This enemy at home must be fought by the German people in a political struggle, cooperating with the proletariat of other countries whose struggle is against their own imperialists. liebknecht-processing

The son of Wilhelm Liebknecht, one of the founders of the SPD, Karl Liebknecht trained to be a lawyer and defended many Social Democrats in political trials. He was also a leading figure in the socialist youth movement and thus became a leading figure in the struggle against militarism.

As a deputy in the Reichstag he was one of the first SPD representatives to break party discipline and vote against war credits in December 1914. He became a figurehead for the struggle against the war. His opposition was so successful that his parliamentary immunity was removed and he was improsoned.

Freed by the November revolution he immediately threw himself into the struggle and became with Rosa Luxemburg one of the founders of the new Communist Party (KPD)

The defeated of today, they will have learned. They will be cured of the delusion of being able to find their salvation in the help of masses of confused soldiers; cured of the delusion of being able to trust in leaders who prove themselves to be feeble and impotent; cured of the belief in independent social democracy, which disdainfully abandoned them. Left only to their own devices, they will fight their coming battles, gain their coming victories. And the watchword, that the liberation of the working class must be the work of the working class itself, will have gained for them a new, deeper meaning.

In January 1919, the Spartacus League played a leading role in the Spartacist Uprising, a general strike and armed rebellion in Berlin. The uprising was crushed by the SPD government and the Freikorps (paramilitary units composed of World War I veterans). For their role in the uprising, Liebknecht and Luxemburg were both kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on January 15th, 1919.

Their contributions to European socialism are commemorated annually in Germany during the second weekend of January, an event known as the Liebknecht-Luxemburg Demonstration, or "LL-Demo" for short.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said the governor was denied entry into a venue at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 21, after being invited to speak at the event due to "pressure" from the Trump administration.

Newsom had been scheduled to speak with Fortune at the USA House, Davos, a privately organized event, at the World Economic Forum, which has been recognized by the U.S. government as the nation's headquarters in Davos.

A lot of people are about to be hit with a big winter storm who are not used to this kind of weather. Here are some tips from a Minnesotan:

Keeping warm:

  • avoid cotton fabrics.

  • Use layers, take them off if you start to sweat.

  • I like tight gloves with thick mittens, which allows use of your hands sometimes without skin exposure.

  • A face mask works as a scarf or another layer in a pinch

  • Warm up your home in case you lose power. Power outages may happen after the snow/freezing rain stops

Snow removal:

  • Lift with your legs, not your back.

  • Don't save all of the shoveling for the very end of the storm, it'll be more difficult and will start to create an ice layer (especially where walked on)

  • if you have a car, lift up the windshield wipers before it starts snowing/freezing rain

  • Completely clean your car soon after the storm. In most places, it's illegal to drive with a lot of snow/ice on your car and super dangerous.

  • If you're parked on a street, move the car to a plowed area when possible so they can plow where you were parked

  • If you have a driveway, clear off part of the street in the direction the plow will come from, so that doesn't end up blocking your driveway

Driving

  • stay home until streets are plowed if possible (thank you healthcare workers and emergency responders!)

  • Turn on ABS brake and traction control settings, if available

  • accelerate and take turns slowly

  • Have more time/distance to brake

  • Speed up before going up an incline, getting stuck and sliding back down is not fun

Sliding on ice:

  • If walking, keep your feet underneath your center of gravity

  • If driving, switch to neutral and steer in the direction that the back of the car is sliding, but don't overreact on steering. Slamming brakes will make sliding worse.

Car stuck in snow:

  • turn off traction control

  • don't just let the tires spin out

  • try shoveling, sand/kitty litter, and rocking back and forth

  • Once you get moving again, don't stop

Edit: if you do lose power, have a faucet or two drip water to prevent the pipes from freezing and bursting

Edit 2: if you see ICE, follow these steps

A French magistrate has said two Trump administration emissaries approached her seeking to lobby against an election ban on the French far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

Magali Lafourcade, the secretary general of France’s human rights commission (CNCDH), an independent body that advises the government, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) she had reported the content of the meeting to the French foreign ministry immediately, fearing a potential “manipulation of the public debate in France”.

Confirming comments she made to France 5 TV, Lafourcade said she had been very surprised by the tenor of her discussion with the US advisers in Paris last May, when they steered the conversation on to French judges’ sentencing of Le Pen in 2025 after she was found guilty of the embezzlement of European parliament funds.

After a nine-week trial in Paris, judges ruled last March that Le Pen had been at the heart of an extensive and long-running fake jobs scam at the European parliament, and banned her from running for public office for five years with immediate effect.

Greens secure council seat in Derbyshire

In a first-of-its-kind win, the Greens gained a council seat from Reform in a Derbyshire by-election on 20 January. Green candidate Lian Pizzey beat Reform’s Juliette Stevens by 1,341 votes to 1,091.

The previous Reform councillor for Horsley ward, Richard Morgan, stepped down back in November due to ill health. The by-election this triggered means that the Greens now have three county councillors in Derbyshire.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t all good. A similar by-election for Codnor, Langley Mill & Aldercar saw a Reform gain from Labour. Worse still, the ward — part of Amber Valley Borough Council – also saw the newcomer far-right Advance Party take third place.

‘People don’t want the older parties’

Before the by-election result was revealed on Tuesday, Pizzey commented that:

People are now confident in the Green Party, people who may not have previously voted for us. People are not impressed by the county council and Reform have not changed things like they said they would, and people don’t want the older parties of Labour and the Conservatives.

I think we will see more of this across the country, people choosing between Reform and the Green Party.

Derbyshire was one of the counties in which Reform party councils chose to hike taxes by the maximum amount permitted — in spite of the fact that the party has promised to find savings.

Pizzey stated that people had been “unimpressed” with Reform’s performance on the County council.  He spoke about the people he’d talked to whilst out doorstepping before the by-election:

They’ve mentioned care homes, they’ve mentioned the fact that council taxes can be going up by the maximum amount and wanted… a local representative, who would actually go to Matlock and hold the Reform council to account.

I’m so pleased that the residents have been able to come out and say now we want somebody else, somebody who is going to represent us locally.

‘We’ll only see more of this’

Following the vote-count, Cllr Pizzey hailed his result as a sign that the Greens can take on Reform and win. He commented that:

The vote for the Conservatives, the vote for Labour are down significantly and we are now seeing something of a shift.

I think a lot of people in this election have decided that they are voting either Reform or they are voting for Green and I think we’ll only see more of this.

Back before the 2025 council elections, Horsley was a Conservative seat, flipping to Reform back in May. This previous right-to-right movement makes its sudden switch to the left-wing Greens all the more eye-catching.

The numbers show that there’s certainly some truth to Pizzey’s musings. The vote shares of both Labour and the Conservatives dropped in Horsley, with Labour in particular tanking to just 3.8%.

Meanwhile, Reform’s share actually rose marginally, from 35% to 35.5%. However, the Greens effectively hoovered up the loss from the two major parties.

Local vs national

The Reform candidate for Horsley, Juliette Stevens, refused to give comment to the press. In fact, Derbyshire Live reported that it made repeated attempts to contact Stevens, with party officials “intervening to prevent this happening”.

The candidates for both major parties laid the blame for their defeat at the feat of their parliamentary counterparts. Conservative candidate and borough councillor Amanda Paget said:

It is the same as I predicted. People are upset at the Conservative party nationally.

We had 14 years in Government and got things wrong towards the end.

In particular, she cited Party-gate during the Covid pandemic as emblematic of her party’s failings. She also commented that on shadow cabinet members visited to help with the by-election. By contrast, both Polanski and Farage put in appearances for the Greens and Reform, respectively.

When questioned on whether she believed Kemi Badenoch was the right choice for Tory leader, Paget stated:

I wouldn’t know, I’ve not met her.

Meanwhile, Labour candidate John Cowings has mentioned struggles distinguishing local politics from his party’s national image. He said:

Some voters have voiced their displeasure at the Government and it comes down to whether local Labour members are able to turn that around.

It is taking time for the Government to demonstrate that it is improving things, it takes time for decisions to be felt by people.

We need to respond to people of all ages and backgrounds and tackle the division being pushed by the right.

Amber Valley

In more alarming news, over in the Amber Valley borough council by-election, Reform won a seat by a notable margin. Reform candidate Dave Chambers took 595 votes – more than double Labour’s 249 for candidate Mark Howard

Labour previously held the Codnor, Langley Mill & Aldercar ward. However, the by-election was triggered when Labour councillor David Moon resigned his position.

Both the Horsley and Codnor, Langley Mill & Aldercar by-elections saw early outings for the far-right Advance UK Party. Whilst the candidate for Horsley took just 57 votes, coming second-last, the newly-formed party did significantly better in Amber Valley.

In fact, Advance candidate Alex Stevenson received 161 votes, finishing third overall. In doing so, they beat out the Conservatives, Labour and the Greens.

Advance UK launched back in September 2025. It was founded by tech billionaire Ben Habib, the former deputy leader of Reform UK. Both Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk have thrown their weight behind the far-right newcomers.

A mixed week

Overall, the wins for both the Greens and Reform — coupled with the performance of Advance in Amber Valley — make this week’s by-elections a distinctly mixed bag.

Whilst the results clearly suggest that voters are intensely fatigued with the old-guard of both Labour and the Conservatives, that frustration is turning into gains for both the left and far-right.

Perhaps the most interesting take-away is that the Greens are genuinely capable of taking seats from Reform. Whilst Reform’s share of the Horsley vote remained static, suggesting the party retained its vote new voter base, the Greens gained support seemingly from both Labour and Conservative pools.

Likewise, whilst the appearance of yet-another party of bigoted chancers on the scene is never good news, the potential to split the far-right vote between racist and racist (new) shouldn’t be underestimated.
