European and Ukrainian leaders have officially launched an International Claims Commission in The Hague, marking a significant step toward accountability and reparations for the damage caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The new body is tasked with processing and adjudicating claims related to losses suffered by the Ukrainian state, businesses, and individuals since the start of the war.

The establishment of the Commission reflects growing international consensus that victims of the conflict should have access to a structured, legal mechanism to seek compensation. According to European officials, more than 80,000 claims have already been submitted, highlighting the vast scale of destruction to infrastructure, housing, industry, and livelihoods across Ukraine.

...

The International Claims Commission is designed to operate as an independent and rules-based mechanism. Its mandate includes reviewing evidence, assessing damages, and determining the validity and value of claims arising from the conflict. While it does not itself enforce payments, the Commission represents a crucial institutional framework that could underpin future compensation arrangements.

Locating the Commission in The Hague — a city internationally recognized as a center for justice and international law — underscores the legal and symbolic weight of the initiative. European leaders emphasized that the Commission complements existing international justice efforts and reinforces the principle that violations of international law carry consequences.

...

For Ukraine, the launch of the Commission represents an important diplomatic achievement and a step toward long-term recovery and reconstruction ... For Europe, the Commission sends a broader message: accountability and reparations are integral to any durable peace. By creating a formal mechanism now, European states aim to ensure that compensation is not treated as an afterthought, but as a core element of post-war justice laying the groundwork for future reparations and reinforcing the international rules-based order.

Kind of…

If I comment or post from Mlem, I can immediately see it from Voyager but not from Mlem.

This has resulted in a couple of double comments as I thought it didn’t stick.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Back in 2021, the internet briefly lost its collective mind over a very particular headline: rats had been trained to play Doom — specifically, Doom II. Four years later, the project is back with a substantial update, and this time it's less of a novelty and more of something that actually resembles gameplay. Kind of. Especially now that an added trigger mechanism allows the rats, which see their way around the game with new wraparound AMOLED screens, to shoot.

The project, led by neuroengineer Viktor Tóth, has evolved into a second-generation setup that significantly expands what the rats can do inside the Doom engine. The original version used a clever but limited configuration: rats stood in a harness over a freely rotating ball, with forward movement mapped to movement through a simplified Doom II corridor. Rewards came in the form of sweetened water dispensed when the rat performed the desired action. It worked, but only that; there was no real interaction with the game's mechanics, so calling it "playing Doom" was overstating the case a bit.

Fuck this optimism. We need realism. And I don't mean pessimism, I mean realism. Pessimism is assuming nothing will change for the better. Optimism is assuming troubles will pass without you having to do anything. Realism is adjusting the sails.

This isn't inevitably going to end after the midterms or after the next scheduled presidential election. Those responsible aren't inevitably going to be prosecuted. It'll only happen if someone makes it happen.

Everyone needs to stop assuming this will pass. The world needs to gear up to protect itself, America needs to do something about this mess. The sooner America and the rest of the world recognizes that America is now a fascist dictatorship, the sooner something might be able to be done about it.

A Los Angeles judge has decided that Lost International, a prominent surf and lifestyle brand, cannot claim trademark infringement through the Lanham Act (Trademark Act of 1946) to block Lady Gaga from selling Mayhem merchandise as part of its an ongoing $100 million lawsuit.

The suit, filed in March, alleges that some of the musician’s Mayhem merchandise designs copy one of its logos. Judge Fernando M. Olguin’s latest decision dismisses the request for Gaga to be blocked from selling merch using the logo, which she has been doing since The Mayhem Ball Tour began in July 2025.

Matthew has been photographing foxes close to his home in north London for over a year and ever since spotting this street art had dreamt of capturing this image. After countless hours and many failed attempts his persistence paid off.
