Hostile spy agencies are now as focused on infiltrating western universities and companies as they are on doing so to governments, according to the former head of Canada’s intelligence service.

David Vigneault warned that a recent “industrial-scale” attempt by China to steal new technologies showed the need for increased vigilance from academics.

"The frontline has moved, from being focused on government information to private sector innovation, research innovation and universities,” he told the Guardian in his first interview since leaving the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), which is part of the “Five Eyes” intelligence sharing alliance with the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Vigneault said China’s leadership had been on a long programme of military regeneration after being horrified by how swiftly the US army took over Iraq in 2003.

Beijing decided to invest in “asymmetric capabilities” and steal as much technical knowledge as possible from the west.

The headline here is a bit misleading, what he actually said was:

"Who's to know? [Technology firms] are spending trillions and trillions on AI and maybe it's going to produce the next War and Peace.

"And if people want to read that book, AI-generated or not, we will be selling it - as long as it doesn't pretend to [be] something that it isn't.

"We as booksellers would certainly naturally and instinctively disdain it," Daunt said.

Readers value a connection with the author "that does require a real person", he added. Any AI-generated book would always be clearly labelled as such.

My revised headline is:

Waterstones boss would rather not sell books generated by AI, but might if they are correctly labelled.

I do not get enjoyment anymore out of being online, not at all. I used to really love being online; Gaming, Reddit, Discord and all that. Especially certain games and Reddit (games due to MMO and Reddit because of fun video’s, niche communities and such).

However, for the past several years I actually do not like being online and even sort of despise it. There’s no fun at all anymore, everything is either AI, ragebait, politics turned into fights and just overall misery around the world (wars, fascism, racism and general hatred).

Even the communities that should be fun end up often enough into the same things as mention previously (such as politics, ragebait and hatred). I have even tried different platforms (such Instagram, Tumblr, BlueSky, Mastodon). Even Lemmy itself ended up with a lot of the same issues Reddit has.

Yet with knowing this, I still end up being online. Reddit, Lemmy and occasionally Instagram. It’s this kind of FOMO thing: ‘’what if there’s news about X thing’’ or ‘’there might be something fun now’’. Not only that, life its self is also not so fun and kind of boring (office work, work from home and some life circumstances) and due to that still end up being online.

This post is kind of three things; a rant, offmychest and a question to the reader.

So I was wondering; do other people have a similar feeling about the internet not being so fun anymore as it used to be?

A group of soldiers on Sunday appeared on Benin's state television claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon from office and dissolved all state institutions. Talon's office, meanwhile, said that loyalist forces had managed to get the situation "under control".

It is a hacker’s dream. Even in the face of repeated warnings to protect online accounts, a new study reveals that “admin” is the most commonly used password in the UK.

The second most popular, “123456”, is also unlikely to keep hackers at bay.

It’s not just a problem here – Australians, Americans and Germans also use “admin” more than any other password when accessing websites, apps and logging in to their computers. Around the world, “123456” emerges as the most popular.

Currently getting familiar with PieFed as my new main platform after using Lemmy for more than 2 years.

I was missing the New Comments filter from Lemmy that shows you posts that had recent comments.

After some digging on Codeberg, I found this issue and found out that the Active sort on PieFed shows you posts with recent comments.

tl;dr New Comments on Lemmy is Active on PieFed

Egypt on Wednesday rejected Israeli claims that the two sides had reached an agreement to reopen the Rafah crossing in one direction to allow Palestinians to leave the Gaza Strip, stressing that no coordination or discussions had taken place, according to the State Information Service (SIS).
