AI Summary:
White House officials confirm President Trump’s plan to reduce tariffs on auto parts. The administration will also prevent automakers from paying tariffs. A proclamation formalising the change is expected to be signed by the president. Treasury Secretary Stott Bessent said on Monday that “it’s up to China to de-escalate” the trade war. On Monday, China once again denied any ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States. The Trump administration appears to be softening its hard-line tariff stance. Spot gold also declined by 1% to $3,311 per ounce following a modest rebound on Monday. Portuguese electricity operator REN said the outage was caused by a “rare atmospheric phenomenon” related to extreme temperature changes in Spain. Spain's economy grew 3.2% in 2024, more than double the eurozone average of 0.9%. Beatriz said that her computer monitor screens went black and that she was “connected to the internet on my laptop but not on my phone for half an hour more or less”. After that, Beatriz told her team and I that we could go home after this as we wouldn’t be able to continue working and the recovery of the power grid was expected to take several hours. The travel sector will certainly have felt the pressure as the power cut halted trains and caused major disruption at airports. Spain’s IBEX 35, the main benchmark of the Spanish stock market, was up 0.75% at 13,456.10, while the EUROSTOXX 600, a broad measure of the European equity market, gained 0.53% to 523.19. In France, the CAC 40 was up 0.0% at 7,573.76 points, Germany’s Dax was also higher, up 0.3% at 22,271.67 points. Italy’s FTSE MIB was also trading in the green, rising 0.1% at market

This megathread's topic is inspired by our lovely news regular, @Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net, who talks often about the conditions inside El Salvador and gives nuanced and informative takes.

As the Trump administration continues to make foreign policy blunders that would make even the staunchest anti-imperialist accelerationist blush - and we are barely three months in! - it's interesting to compare and contrast his policies of incompetent imperialist and domestic management to the dictators in other countries.

Bukele is somewhat unique among fascists, in that he seems to not hide - and seems to even admit to - his evil, self-describing as the world's "coolest dictator". El Salvador has no particular shortage of prominent fascists in their history, but one major example is Maximiliano Martínez, who led the country over much of the 1930s and the early 1940s. He was responsible the deaths of many thousands of communists and indigneous people, and yet joined World War 2 on the side of the Allies and against the Nazis.

The comparisons between Martínez and Bukele - and, indeed, between Bukele and Trump - in terms of their impact on minority groups are slowly growing as world attention is being drawn to the country. The recent meeting between Bukele and Trump has shifted a spotlight onto El Salvador's crime policy; the internal conditions of El Salvador's prisons are genuinely monstrous. One gets a similar feeling as when reading descriptions of the conditions of Holocaust victims in German concentration camps. Trump has made statements to the effect that he want a similar crime crackdown inside the United States, and I certainly believe that he wants this (ICE is already just kidnapping people off the streets into vans), but his administration has been so chaotic and mismanaged that it's difficult to determine whether this will be an interest he rapidly drops in favor of some other hair-brained scheme.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.

Putin is a master troll.

Declaring a short unilateral ceasefire with the pretext of being a goodwill gesture is a good move. It shows Trump that Russia is serious about negotiations to bring the war to an end and to show that Russia isn't opposed to ceasefires in general. And it helps make the point that long term ceasefires with no agreements or monitoring aren't really ceasefires.

But.....

Declaring a unilateral ceasefire in celebration of the defeat of the nazi 3rd reich and he's asking the banderite neo-nazis to observe it? That is just a muah chef kiss. Fucking hilarious.

I've been brewing lemonade with a ginger bug and water kefir for quite a while. But whenever I try to incorporate lemon peel it seems to completely halt fermentation. I have tried normal and organic lemons without success. Currently I have a small batch of kefir with lemon juice going. Half of the batch is with lemon peel and that half shows no sign of fermentation after 30 hours (I have already bottled the other half because it was ready). Did any of you have similar experiences? I would really like to include peel for the taste 🙃

Summary

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, during his first visit to Denmark since taking office in March, rejected Donald Trump’s push to annex Greenland, stating the island "will never be a piece of property that can be bought."

Standing alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, he added, “We are in a foreign policy situation which means we have to move closer together.”

Frederiksen said Denmark was ready to invest more in Greenland as part of a “modernisation” of the two countries relationship.

"But over time, the executive branch grew exceedingly powerful. Two world wars emphasized the president’s commander in chief role and removed constraints on its power. By the second half of the 20th century, the republic was routinely fighting wars without its legislative branch, Congress, declaring war, as the Constitution required. With Congress often paralyzed by political conflict, presidents increasingly governed by edicts."

Hey, deGoogle community! I wanted to share my personal experience with quitting YouTube, a journey that has been both challenging and liberating.

Initially, I started my deGoogle journey by cutting back on various Google services, but when it came to YouTube, I found it incredibly hard to let go. I tried using alternatives like NewPipe and FreeTube—both fantastic FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) options that allowed me to access YouTube content without the usual Google baggage. However, despite these alternatives, I still felt trapped in the cycle of daily YouTube usage and the addictive nature of the platform.

To tackle this, I decided to take a more drastic approach. I implemented a DNS block using AdGuard DNS and NextDNS, which helped me create a network-wide blocklist for Google services. In the first two weeks, I found myself turning the DNS off occasionally, creating two profiles in NextDNS to allow Google services when I felt the urge creeping back in. It was a struggle, but I knew I needed to break free.

Gradually, I began replacing my YouTube watch time with journaling and diving into topics that truly interested me, particularly various philosophies. After about four weeks, I was amazed to find that I no longer felt the urge to watch YouTube at all! However, I still have my doubts about returning to the platform, fearing it might reignite my addiction and lead me back into a FOMO (fear of missing out) mindset. To safeguard against this, I’ve kept my no-Google filters active in NextDNS.

I also discovered alternatives like PeerTube, thanks to creators like The Linux Experiment and TechLore, who actively post content there. Platforms like Loop, Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Lemmy have also become integral parts of my online life, providing me with a sense of community and connection without the overwhelming distractions of YouTube.

By de-Googling and stepping away from YouTube, I’ve reclaimed so much of my life. While many tout YouTube as a great social platform for mental health, I’ve found the opposite to be true for me. Without the constant distractions and the pressure to consume content that often felt useless, I’ve experienced a newfound clarity and peace of mind.

Now, I have more time to help my mom, focus on my own projects, and enjoy moments of solitude that have significantly reduced my stress levels.

YouTube can be a helpful platform for many, but for me, it was a different story. I initially thought it would lead me to greater privacy and understanding of FOSS services, but instead, I found myself entangled in a web of privacy violations and creepy policies. The community here has been instrumental in guiding me toward FOSS alternatives that respect my privacy.

I’m curious—does anyone else have experiences with quitting YouTube or trying to? I’d love to hear your stories and insights!

I'd like to talk about one of my favorite ball python morphs, the banana gene. It is an incomplete dominant trait first produced by NERD in 2003. Incomplete dominant means an animal only needs one copy of the gene for it to express itself, however a "super" (homozygous) form exists when both parents pass the gene on to their offspring.

An adult and baby banana ball python. As you can see, they are bright yellow with black spots as adults, looking very much like a banana. They have white bellies. This is a different gene from albinism, and they have normal eyes. Here's a wild type for comparison:

One thing that is very unique to the banana gene is it is sex linked (the only ball python morph that does this, not sure about other animals). Female bananas will produce equal split of male and female, banana and wild type. However in males, it is linked to how the sire inherited the gene. If he inherited it from his father's side, he is a "male maker" and almost all of the bananas he produces will be male. The sex split and morph split are the same (50/50), but almost all the males will have the gene and almost all the females will be wild type. Same if he inherited the gene from his mother, just reversed (this is a "female maker"). A common myth/misunderstanding is that this holds true all the time, it does not. A male maker can still produce female banana ball pythons, and male wild types. Same for female makers, in the other direction. Roughly 3% of snakes produced from male bananas will be one of these instead of the "expected" outcome.

These are both super bananas if you wanted to see what they look like ^^

I actually happen to have a banana, she's around 7 or 8(?) but I got her as an adult so there's no real way to tell:
She's often a picky eater, but is very sweet and handleable. Happy to talk more about snakes/ball pythons!
