China criminalizes human rights defenders with laws on Disturbing Social Order, while the top crime category across whole population is Endangering Public Security, an analysis by the Safeguard Defenders has found.

Safeguard Defenders analysed around 1,400 human rights-related court cases in China over the past 15 years. We used it show that the Chinese Communist Party continues to arrest and impose lengthy sentences on religious groups.

Decided criminal cases in courts of first instance as recorded on the Chinese Supreme Court’s National Court Judicial Statistics Bulletin (Gongbao) have grown from 766,746 in 2009 to 1,038,523 in 2022. That’s an increase of more than one third over 13 years. Total decided cases reached a peak in 2019 at almost 1.3 million, according to Safeguard Defenders.

Many of China’s laws are left intentionally vague, allowing the justice system great freedom to define its limits at will, the NGO adds.

Decided cases in courts of first instance in the category Endangering Public Security have risen four-fold from 86,814 in 2009 to 350,290 in 2022.

Obstructing the Administration of Social Order has also more than doubled from 133,639 to 298,803 over the same period.

[Decided cases are close to, but not exactly the same as, convictions. Decided cases are those that have gone to trial and reached a verdict (both guilty and non-guilty) in a court of first instance (that means it does not include appeals). Since convictions in China are near 100%, we can assume that this number is almost the same as first-instance convictions, Safeguard Defenders says.]

A company I have no business relationship with sent me a breach notice stating that criminals got my data. This company is a supplier to many banks, brokerages, insurance companies, etc.

Obviously I want to know which of my banks or insurance companies I am doing business with trusted them with my data. I called and asked. They refused to tell me. But they have made it deliberately complicated. The phone number they gave to breach victims is for a 3rd party call center who knows nothing. So the call center says “we don’t have that info”.

Question: do financial/analytics orgs (or whatever the fuck they are) have a legal obligation to provide data breach victims with the SOURCE of the info? Do they have to tell me which of my banks (or whatever) hired them to be a custodian of my data?

What rights to data breach victims have?

(more background: https://links.hackliberty.org/post/2667522)

(update)
Thanks for all the useful feedback folks! I guess the question that remains is whether there are any federal laws that require the disclosure I am after. I looked up the law for my state here and found no law entitling breach victims to be informed of the source of their personal data. It would help to know the law because the AG, CFPB, and FTC will be limited to the law themselves.

All-day Pea Soup (lemmy.sdf.org)
submitted 2 days ago by pa2 to c/homemade_food

All-day Pea Soup

Smoked ham hocks, sauteed onions, celery and carrots. Thyme, Margaram, Bay Leaves (4 - cooks have to count), garlic, salt and pepper.

Ham hocks, covered in water, went on to simmer at 07:00. I use the
spaghetti pot and strainer. Easy to lift all of the hocks out of the
broth, strains any of the smaller bones at the same time.

For some soups, such as this, (and sofrito, sofregit, soffritto, or
refogado, ) I prefer vegetables that are small diced. I seldom
concern myself with peeling carrots as they will all but disappear
through the day. I do avoid celery leaves...personal taste.

Using a large (BIG) cast iron pot saute the veggies until the onions
are glassy. Add in herbs and spices. Bloom everything. At the same
time sort and wash 2 pounds of dried peas. When the onions are ready
deglaze the pan with some of the ham hock broth. Add the peas. Cover
with additional ham hock broth. Stir to prevent the peas from
clumping. <= technical term, sorry.

preheat oven: 200F. Ideally we want just long soaking heat, cooking
from 12:Noon to roughly 17:00, plus or minus the time it takes to bake
crescent rolls.

The ham hocks, in the strainer, are then turned out onto a sheet pan
to cool. Go play a game of Spite & Malice. Regardless of who wins,
the hocks are now cool enough to handle, though I have become a big
fan of gloves for the 'messy' work of picking the meat from the hocks.

Time to combine. Add the meat to the newly acquainted pea soup. Add
'some' more of the broth. Lid the pot and bring to a full rolling
boil. Steam will be pushing out from under the cast iron lid when that
is achieved. Reduce heat, stir completey, and evaluate for adding
more broth.

Place lidded pot of Pea Soup on the center rack of the oven and ignore
for 45 minutes. Pull it out. You should notice the peas are really
beginning to break down. This is another reason for all day cooking,
cooks everything thoroughly but leaves some body, some texture. Add
more broth as necessary, but it shouldn't need much.

Back in the oven while I complete writing this...

When I am done with this I will pull the soup, give it a good stir (to
avoid the dreaded clumping). Evaluate for seasoning. Always, always,
always use less salt than you think. Adjust to taste. Then every
hours of so I will pull it and stir... and maybe taste, again and
again.

Service can be as involved or as simple as you like. I'll pull the
soup, it will stay hot in the lidded cast iron. I'll crank the oven
to 350F, spread out some tube Crescent Rolls and in 12 to 14 minutes
we will just ladle right out of the cast iron.

Now I have to go pull, stir, taste and adjust. Darn my luck.

Is there any kind of legal standard of liability when a victim of a data breach suffers from someone exploiting their data? If you are only breached once, obviously it’s easy to point the finger to whoever leaked your data.

But I’ve been hit 3 times now. So all those shitty corps who sloppily handled my data can point the finger to each other. Would a court say the most recent sloppy custodian is responsible if my data is used against me? Or would it be the most reckless custodian? Or would it be equal blame? Or does everyone get off the hook when a victim cannot prove which leak leads to an exploit?

It’s a hypothetical question. Not saying my data was exploited after the breaches, but I wonder about the overall trend. What I’m getting at is there may be little incentive to actually invest in good data security because when a breach happens amid so many other breaches there is perhaps a diffusion responsibility.

  • The European Parliament (EP) urges Turkish authorities to drop the charges against Bülent Mumay and all other arbitrarily detained media workers, political opponents, human rights defenders, civil servants and academics. Türkiye deplores "a complex web of legislation that systematically silences and controls journalists, and denounce the new “foreign agent regulation” to be introduced by the end of 2024", the EP says in a statement.

  • China must immediately and unconditionally release Ilham Tohti, 2019 Sakharov Prize laureate, and Gulshan Abbas, as well as all those arbitrarily detained in China, MEPs say. They strongly condemn the human rights violations against Uyghurs and people in Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China.

  • For Iraq, the EP resolution underlines that new proposed laws do not legally protect women and child victims of domestic violence in the country and deplore the fact that the proposed amendments to the law, if enacted, would lead to an even more radical application of Sharia law.

The resolution urges Iraq to adopt a national action plan to eliminate child marriage, criminalise marital rape, fight domestic violence and strengthen women’s and girls’ rights, in line with the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

Anyone know of any realtime menu mods for OpenMW? Specifically, I'd like to have dialog take place in real time. It always feels strange that I can have a whole conversation with someone, but never recuperate my fatigue level.
