Almost got fired yesterday, and my trial period at work got extended. Oh well. Anime time.

Picking up again after last month's thread, here's some manga I read and anime I watched this month:

Manga:

I've been catching up on Arasa OL Haman-Sama, which much like Char's Daily Life is a Gundam parody / Slice of Life show. It's alright. The latter manga I mentioned is better. B-

I've been reading some of TenPuru: No One Can Live on Loneliness after seeing people sing its praises as a hilarious comedy. It's underwhelming, but alright. Some good gags, but nothing impressive thus far. Also lecherous characters are part of the premise, so y'know. C+

Anime:

I started watching Kill La Kill on a whim earlier this month, when I was home with a nasty cold, and while it did not click the previous times I tried watching it, it did now. Silly? Yes. Infamously horny? Yes. But does it have a bone to pick with society and the writing quality to back it up? Surprisingly, yes. I'm looking forward to the second half of the show. If the quality keeps up, it could become a problematic favorite of mine. A

After finishing Dragon Ball a couple of months ago, I started Dragon Ball Z. It continues with the quality the original one ended with, but it's merely getting started at this point. I'm gonna be watching this for a couple of years, odds are.

Keep your hands off Eizouken! was very much a showcase for Science SARU's animators. Very simple story, but impressive overall. Worth watching at least once. B+

Also season 2 of Aa, Megami-Sama! (the 2005 one). Still entertaining, but more of the same from season 1. I like it. A-

Light Novels

I had paid time off earlier this month and went to Norway for a few days. There, I stumbled upon an impressively stocked comic book store, where I picked up an American import copy of Full Metal Panic, I'm gonna find the time soon to read it.

Anime-Adjacent

Three full years after getting to the penultimate level in Super Robot Wars V and getting distracted by SRW 30 when it came out, I finally finished the game. It was good. The whole series is a gem for anyone who enjoys mecha anime. A+

seeing this made me just break down crying. if you'd asked me yesterday what i thought of akira toriyama i would have probably said i respected him immensely, but his work didn't hold a special place in my heart. but realizing that he's gone is just devastating. such an iconic, important artist. the world is worse without him

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re watching the first four episodes (of 13) from one of the all-time classic anime OVAs, Record of Lodoss War (1990). We will watch a band of medieval adventurers as they trek through dungeons, kill monsters, and collect treasure. Imagine a video game, but as an anime. That is pretty much this series’ tone. It is nevertheless one of the most iconic OVA series out there, owing to its beautiful aesthetic. After that is Blue Giant (2023), one of the most critically-acclaimed anime films of recent years, concerning a young man’s quest to become the greatest saxophone player of all time. To do that, he has to put together the most killer jazz band of all time, too. Will he succeed? I guess we’ll find out. This is by far the best-regarded film of director Yuzuru Tachikawa to date; he has made a couple of Detective Conan movies, and a Bleach movie, and that’s about it.

We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re continuing The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006), the smash-hit anime about the wacky adventures of an eccentric, exuberant schoolgirl and her not-quite-as-boisterous friends. Episodes 25 through 28 tonight.

After that is The Peasants (2023), a Polish animated feature directed by British duo Hugh and DK Welchman, who are best-known for Van Gogh biopic Loving Vincent (2017), which we previously watched. A girl in 19th-century Poland is forced to marry a much older, richer kulak. Surprise, surprise, he sucks, and so do the villagers around her, who are jealous of her upward mobility. I’m sure this will all end happily. God Damn Poland: The Movie. The whole thing looks like a watercolor painting, and reviews are excellent, so let’s give it a whirl.

In a rare youtube algoritim W, I got recommended the trailer for the series from Chinese studio Flint Sugar, which is releasing in 2025, based on this short film. Kinda gives some FLCL vibes, at least in so far as the style.

I've seen both these anime (Strawberry Marshmallow and Asobi Asobase) and I always liked these two characters, cause I can kinda see myself in them in sort of a reverse and less exaggerated way. I think these characters can really be seen as generally representative of the language troubles that many immigrants' children experience, like being expected to have a higher skill in a language than you really have, and what that can do to your self-esteem or your sense of identity. I think this might be a more pronounced issue for children of English-speaking immigrants than immigrants of other language backgrounds, though, just because of the prestige that English has.

I'm gonna be honest, I'd only ever heard the "nǐ hǎo nyan" jingle in that one brony fan-animation of Derpy Hooves doing the dance, where there's a random weird bit in the middle implying that Derpy is inviting Doctor Whooves to make a little pony sex tape. And then in the years after I watched that brony fan-animation, the jingle would keep randomly popping back into my head, without me remembering where I first heard it, and for some reason never thinking to look into either where I first heard the jingle, or where it originally came from... And now, serendipitously, I stumbled upon the original source.

And with that I have gotten closure about yet another random weeb thing from my childhood that I didn't even realize I wanted closure about.
