Sorry this took me so long, but you can now manage post and comment reports from the inbox, but only on https://blorpblorp.xyz/ for now. I don't moderate many communities, so if anyone here is an active mod, I would appreciate some help testing the feature. If that goes well, we can roll this out to the native iOS and Android apps soon.

Happy holidays everyone!

Edit: Lemmy only for now, as PieFed doesn’t support reading post/comment reports via the API yet. But I will try and get that in very soon

Hi there everyone,

I am trying out Blorp on both desktop browser and in app and everything for the most part is going swimmingly aside from this. I browse all usually in the hopes of finding new stuff but this often results in needing to block users(reposting something across 20 communities or bots), communities(foreign language or something I don't need, like politics or porn) or instances(again, usually foreign language or something like political or troll instances) and in normal piefed UI and my other piefed/lemmy apps, this is usually very easy, all found in a central dropdown.

I'm having problems figuring out if I'm just not doing it right or whether Blorp has spaced these three things out in completely different menus and dropdowns. I, in fact, still haven't found out how to block an instance while using the app.

Is there a central menu to handle a block like this when looking at any page, like front sorting page, community or post page or is it really different(or seemingly missing) when viewing different pages?

I'm liking the UI otherwise but I really can't use it if this part is as unintuitive as it seems as I need the feature often.

So this isn't as ambiguous as I'm making it, this is the type of consolidation of managing all three elements(user/community/instance) I'm talking about in the default UI:

Will this be fixed? 😅

New Logo

I'm so happy with how the new logo and community banner turned out. You can check out more of Lay's art on on BlueSky.

Fix broken comment links when switching accounts

I've seen a lot of Blorp links to comments that get shared. You click on that link while logged into a different account, and the comment thread is completely broken. But no more! Similar to how Blorp let's you seamlessly switch accounts while viewing a post, comments now work the same!

Speed up app wide feed refreshing

This is something I've been thinking about for awhile. I realized it was actually pretty simple, and speeds up data refreshing across the entire app.

All of this results in the biggest update to Blorp in awhile, hence the 1.10.0. As this is a bigger update, it will sit in beta for at least a week, but I can't wait to get this out to everyone.

Up next

I'll be adding support for PieFed poll posts

I keep seeing lemmynsfw in my feed and I don't want to. I couldn't find the button in the settings.

Also, the community icon on NSFW is not censored so I often see undesirable things on my feed if you know what I'm saying.

Pretty much what the title says, I want to post directly without my fingers leaving the keyboard. When trying some combinations I noticed there are some shortcuts I didn't know about, eg shift enter for a line break, so I wondered if there is documentation on the shortcuts

A feature that some Lemmy apps have (including Mlem and Arctic) are swipe options that allow up to four actions to be taken via short and long horizontal swipes.

As illustrated in the Arctic and Mlem screenshots below, the typical actions are upvote and downvote for the short and long left swipes, and reply and save for the short and long right swipes. Ideally, users would have the option to remap actions to these swipe options, along with having the option to disable them individually; alternative actions users could choose to remap include Block User, Block Community, Hide Post, Share, Crosspost, and Report Post, among others.

In contrast to hard-to-tap buttons, I think swipe actions would make interacting with posts on Blorp easier.

Short Left Swipe in Arctic Short Left Swipe in Mlem Short Left Swipe

Long Left Swipe in Arctic Long Left Swipe in Mlem Long Left Swipe

Short Right Swipe in Arctic Short Right Swipe in Mlem Short Right Swipe

Long Right Swipe in Arctic Long Right Swipe in Mlem Long Right Swipe

So I've been testing the compact sidebar on the web version, and I had some suggestions. Firstly blorp tries to display the instance name, not just the logo which doesn't really make sense with the smaller space. Secondly the different community tabs (Recent, Moderating, Subscribed) all show as just the first letter and I thought it would make more sense to make them icon (eg a clock for recent). The settings etc also aren't shown at all. I also noticed there is no way to center the feed with the compact sidebar, meaning it is always a bit too much an the left. Finally I noticed that the compact sidebar currently only available on web and not tablets (as of 1.9.26), where it would make more sense imo due to the smaller screen size.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I was attempting to cross post using blorp and could not figure out how to do so and ended up having to open and use thunder.

In using Arctic today, I found another feature Blorp seems to be lacking: the automatic labeling of bot-created posts. While some users like communities with such posts for replicating the scope of content available on the corresponding subreddit, I personally prefer blocking them in favor of original Lemmy content, and thus need a way to readily distinguish them. For users who don't feel the need to distinguish between bot and non-bot posts, perhaps an option to toggle the label off would also be useful.

For illustrative purposes, here's one such community displayed on Arctic, Mlem, and Blorp. While Mlem also seems to mark such posts with a miniature terminal icon, I think an icon closer in size to that used by Arctic would be more clearly distinguishable; in going by Mlem's approach though, the icon could be placed next to the existing Blorp new user icon.

1.9.25 is in beta, and breaks the home feed pretty badly. Specifically, when you open a post from the home feed, then press the back button, it throws you to the top of the home feed instead of the post you clicked on.

The following deployments are effected:

I'm working to roll out 1.9.26 quickly before more instances adopt the broken build.

blorpblorp.xyz should be fixed already. The other broken deployments will unfortunately take a little longer to resolve. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Some deployments are still on v1.9.24 and should be unaffected. Those will skip over v1.9.25 and go directly to v1.9.26.

While Blorp has the ability to mark post and comment replies as read or unread, it doesn't appear to be able to mark all unread replies as read simultaneously, a potentially useful feature for those simply looking to clear their backlog.

It would also be useful to extend the ability to mark replies as read or unread to DMs as well.

Rn nsfw is blurred and i dont see a way to turn it off. In my lemmy account settings on the base lemmy ui they are not blurred because i turned it off

Blorp doesn't currently have many reviews, which means a single review really impacts the app's rating. I'm happy to fix whatever bugs you bring me. What's not helpful is leaving a 1 star review and giving no helpful information that can help me resolve the bug.

I spend a lot of hours making sure Blorp works as well as it possibly can. I do this because I enjoy it, and I don't want anything in return. But 1 star "your app doesn't work" review is really not fun or helpful.

Sorry, everyone in this community is nice. I just needed to vent for a second.

Please if you have the time, leaving an honest review on Google Play, App Store, or a star on our GitHub is the best way you can support the project.

And please if you run into bugs, bring them to me in this community, on GitHub, or Matrix so we can get them resolved.

Currently, if someone links to another threadiverse post in their post, it is seemingly handled as any other URL is and opened using the in-app browser. Instead, I suggest that such links be opened as posts directly, with the user having the option to tap the back button at the top left to return to the original post.

20

Having employed Lemmy's community blocking feature to block thousands of communities to minimize my need to scroll past uninteresting All feed content, it seems that having so many communities blocked causes the app to start behaving erratically after tapping the 'Manage Blocks' tab. Even before the page loads, the rest of the app becomes unresponsive, and once the page loads, I can't readily return to the settings page. Only several of the blocked communities load at a time, and after thirty seconds or so the list is sometimes cleared.

(when the page loads)

(when the page clears itself)

I'm not sure at which point the average user would encounter this glitch, but as I am able to load the list in the Arctic app, hopefully it's something that can be fixed for Blorp? Also, while I haven't blocked users to the same degree as I have communities, I presume the same effect would occur should someone opt to block users at that scale too.

I'm working on a new filtering engine that I think will be like nothing you've seen yet.

Basic overview:

  • There will be a list of filters you can browse
    • E.g. US Politics
  • You select the filter list(s) you are interested in
  • The filter list will receive updates.
    • Say a new political event happens and a new name floods the news. The list can be updated dynamically to include the new name without you having to do anything.

For those of you that are tech savvy:

  • Filter lists will live on GitHub
  • You can fork an existing filter list.
  • You can create/host your own filter list for other Blorp users.
  • You can open pull requests for existing filter lists.
  • There will be some tools within Blorp to debug your filter list

Other notes:

  • I don't plan on letting you build these filter list from within the app. They are far too complex to edit easily within the app.
  • But that complexity means you can do far more than other apps
    • Block a post IF it mentions a US state (e.g. "Texas") AND it mentions "shooting"
    • Block a post IF it mentions "ICE" AND it mentions ("detention" OR "deport")
    • Block a post IF it's by a specific list of users AND it mentions a specific word
  • The goal is to create more collaboration between users and make it easier to cut through all the noise on Lemmy and PieFed

How are you currently using filtering in Blorp, Voyager, etc?

  • What type of content are you currently trying to block?
  • Are your filters very unique to you, or something that could be shared as a list?

I had some mixed thoughts on Blorp that I wanted to share so I'll just put them all in this post.

Firstly regarding Peertube embeds. I'm not sure if this is something you can change, but in the iOS app the embeds use the Peertube player UI instead of iOS built in player interface. This only happens with the app, the web version uses the iOS UI. The Peertube player is a bit to convoluted for a phone so it would be nice to use the iOS one.

It would also be nice if you could add an accessibility text when posting an image. If this is implemented it would be nice if it functioned like in Photon, were you can add an alt text to links as well, so it works with external media.

A bug I noticed is after I moderate more communities the list on the startpage keeps jumping from showing the new communities and not showing them. This is on Piefed, but I don't know if it's specific to it and happens on the app and the web version.

When clicking the share button it would be nice if there was an option to get a link to the post/comment on the instance where it was posted originally instead of a Blorp link. Also I noticed that in the web version there is the option to "Share link to comment" that doesn't seem to do anything.

The favicon of website sometimes is the Blorp logo, sometime the favicon of the instance. Be nice if this was consistent.

The lightbox feed has been great so far, however when I use it I just want to see image posts not the thumbnails of articles, so it would be nice if there was a setting to filter these out.

One problem I see with it is that there is no way to unblur a NSFW image without opening the lightbox feed, which is inconvenient if you want to find something in the image mentioned in the comments.

When saving a post the little pink icon appears and I assumed that pressing it would unsave the post. This isn't really a problem, but it would make the UI more intuitive IMO.

I also noticed a bug were some long usernames extend out of the field when hovering over the user eg https://blorpblorp.xyz/inbox/c/microblogmemes@lemmy.world/posts/https%3A%2F%2Fpiefed.zip%2Fpost%2F491912/comments/1533646

Another thing I’d love to see in Blorp is the ability to automatically set the headline at an article as the post title

I was just trying to edit this post with the app and I got an error “Unexpected error status code 422”

That's gonna be it, I know this is a bunch of stuff at once but I just wanted to get these thoughts out

As development on Arctic seems to have halted, Blorp seems like a promising alternative for its Piefed support, but could use additional quality of life features. Among the most important of these from Arctic is additional granularity in post filtering, ensuring that posts one doesn't want to see can be excluded without impacting the visibility of other posts.

Beyond just filtering keywords, options to apply distinct keyword filtering for post titles, content, URL, OP username, and community name would allow users to preemptively exclude content they aren't interested in. Furthermore, via regex expressions, terms can be combined to increase efficiency and maximize the scope of the filters.

Here's an example of how Arctic handles it, with several of my own regex filters.

Filters example 2

Filters example 3

Support for PieFed flairs is currently being tested on https://blorpblorp.xyz/. You must select a PieFed instance that’s already using PieFed v1.2 (e.g. PieFed.social). You can visit !movies@piefed.social, which already uses flairs.

This functionality will take a couple weeks to roll out to the iOS and Android apps. You feedback on the web version would be helpful, thanks!
