First watched this one ages ago and got reminded by a meme post about insurance claims with superheroes. This one is actually based on a true story.

This is a sort of comedy western, based around a high stakes poker game. I saw it years ago and loved it. Truth be told, I can't remember a great deal more about it, and don't want to spoil it for myself by looking it up, but I definitely remember enjoying it a lot.

I watched this for the first time the other day, and thought it was absolutely awesome.

While it's a comedy film, it surprisingly touched on a lot of areas seen in David Graeber's 'Bullshit Jobs' concept, 14 years earlier.

Well acted, supremely funny and well written, and a particular joy to anyone who's worked in an office, or had a family member who did. There's not really any low or slow point in the film, it's steadily excellent the whole way through.

In Cage's hands, cartoonish moments are imbued with real emotion and real emotions become cartoons. Everything – from individual scenes down to single lines of dialogue – feel like they have been embraced as opportunities for creation. Cage is usually interesting even when his films are not.

dialogue in the bar at about 1 hours in, they're both impressive but cage is enchanting when he changes rhythm. He's a genius in that pitiful form

In a 2020 interview, Cage revealed that the released version of the film was recut by Bob Weinstein without Charles' permission and that the latter's original version remains unreleased. In 2024, Charles released his original cut of the film onto his YouTube channel, which runs over an hour longer.

Wikipedia Article of the movie.

This movie is chock full of excellent acting, witty dialog, and superb cinematography. It touches on so many aspects of history around the worker movement of the 1910's, including the IWW, famous Anarchists, and the troubles it faced.

It's quite unique in that it includes interviews with surviving people who knew John Reed and Louise interspersed with different parts of the movie, making it almost like a docu-drama, but with an incredibly high 32 million dollar budget (equivalent to 112 million today).

If you have any interest in unions, the early socialist movement in the United states, and a particularly well done romance, then I highly, highly recommend giving this a watch.

But be sure to have a good chunk of time to set aside, as the movie is 3 hours long!

EDIT: Hah, forgot I posted this here a year ago. Well, hopefully some new members will be able to see it ^^

Wiki Article of the film.

As someone who wasn't particularly a fan of westerns, I specifically sought this movie out a few years ago after reading an old western from a now forgotten series, Fargo. I was blown away by how good it was, and discovered that this film, and specifically Lee Marvin's character, basically rips off the Fargo series wholesale. So I figured, eh, let's have a go, then.

When the movie was over, I was absolutely floored with how good it was, and how well it captured the vibe of the Fargo book, like seeing everything that was in my head pop out onto the screen.

This movie is quite different compared to most westerns of its era, feeling more a like a modern rendition than one from 1966. The pacing is excellent, the actors and acting superb, and the action and story are extremely well done, with very little suspension of disbelief needed.

I would rate this quite highly in my personal top 10 movies, right up there with 3 Days of The Condor and Where Eagles Dare.

A Town Called Bastard (also known as A Town Called Hell on DVD and Blu-ray) is a 1971 international co-production spaghetti Western. It was shot in Madrid with Robert Shaw, Telly Savalas, Stella Stevens and Martin Landau.[2][3][4]

It was released on blu-ray on 18 August 2015.[5] The film was retitled A Town Called Hell for US release as the word "bastard" was thought offensive.[6]

Plot

In 1903 Mexico, a small town is presided over by a tyrant who commands a grizzled outlaw and his men. Also in town is a priest with a violent past, who has abandoned his clerical duties. ...
