Why this is happening

The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.

The sad reality is that while there are a lot of great people on Lemmy, there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join.

Freak culture is making its way mainstream, and if I may be so bold, I think a great deal of that is thanks to horror movies. Think of how many normies you watched over the holiday get really into Nosferatu memes, or how even the most Star-Wars-and-Marvel moviegoer you know will tip their hat to a messed-up A24 trailer. But hey, don't take my word for it, listen to one of the most important names in horror today: Jason Blum.

in 2023, Blum sat down with Nerds of Color for an exclusive NYCC interview. Not long into the discussion, interviewer Sophia Soto asked Blum why he, personally, kept returning to that most genre of genres, and his answer was very much about working weird into the wider world.

"I love horror movies," said the Five Nights at Freddy's producer, "Because it’s a way to like, smuggle subversive stories into the mainstream. So often these strange unusual stories are relegated to independent releases and tiny releases, and no one sees them, but horror is a great way to get subversive stories supported and told in the mainstream. That’s why I love horror."

As Popverse's resident goth kid, I'm absolutely biased when I say I completely agree. But my bias aside, think about some of the most lauded stories in recent cinema - The Substance, Get Out, Sinners - they're all unique tales that capture the human experience via blood, guts, and plenty of jumpscares. And speaking of that last point, Blum does go on to say that another reason he keeps coming back to horror is not just the subversive stories, but the immediate reactions he gets from audiences.

"The fun thing of doing horror movies," Blum told his interviewer, "Is you get to hear people’s reaction. You know, you make a drama, they might love it, but you won’t know because the audience doesn’t move. So, with horror and with comedy, you know if the people like the movie or not by how much noise they’re making and that’s very satisfying, when they’re making noise."

The Ugly Stepsister (2025)

Follows Elvira as she battles against her gorgeous stepsister in a realm where beauty reigns supreme. She resorts to extreme measures to captivate the prince, amidst a ruthless competition for physical perfection.

Apologies if this is not the community for a thread like this, I don't frequent this community as much as I should (considering the volume of movies I watch lol). But I just saw The Ugly Stepsister in theaters and I'm dying to talk about it.

I'm curious if any of you have seen it yet. It's still in theaters and looks like it's going to be fairly niche, I'm sure in no small part due to it being foreign. I definitely recommend it, I found it to be a fun spin on the classic Cinderella story that we get from the likes of Disney and a lot more faithful to the source.

Definitely not for those who are squeamish, but to be honest I found the body horror to not be over the top (unlike The Terrifier 2 lol). The scenes that were there definitely further the story and help with characterization, showing the absolute abuse that Rebekka is willing to put her children through just for some money.

I really liked the juxtaposition between Agnes, with her "effortless beauty" and going after the Prince seemingly for spite, and Elvira, who we obviously see undergo massive treatment to ascertain "beauty" and wanting the Prince her whole life.

Curious to hear anyone else's thoughts on it. I found it reminiscent of The Substance, both for the body horror and themes centering on physical beauty, as well as a LVT film with the dark and depressing feeling that it left me with 🤣

Here’s another draining bout of horror opportunism, spawned in this instance by the copyright expiring on Disney’s Steamboat Willie, the 1928 landmark animation that launched Mickey Mouse into the world. Scurrying on to screens months behind the similarly motivated The Mouse Trap, Steven LaMorte’s bloody pastiche opens with a quote coyly ascribed to “Walt D” before plodding mirthlessly in the pawprints of those recent Winnie-the-Pooh carve-ups, demonstrating no greater brio, invention or wit. Its mock Mickey is a genetically modified super-violent pipsqueak (played by Terrifier breakout star David Howard Thornton, in mangy rodent costume), let loose from the sewers by blundering engineers; rather than the jaunty steamboat his predecessor commandeered, he wreaks murderous havoc on a grimy approximation of the Staten Island ferry, whistling while he works.

Arterial spray fans won’t feel short-changed, but many of the kill scenes are torpedoed by poor lighting, clumsy-to-inept camera coverage and cutting, and effects that only erratically match the action. Amid a number of Sharknado-level performances, and accidentally serving the public by muffling dialogue that wasn’t exactly sparkling to begin with, Thornton gives his Mickey a certain bouncy malevolence – but we get the idea after only a few minutes of watching the actor tap dance on a pop culture grave. These tacky novelty films have been unlucky to land at a moment when mainstream horror has seriously raised its game, but something as cut-price, retrograde and reactionary as this really does deserve the damning label of Mickey Mouse fare.

Following its international premiere at London's FrightFest last year and a successful festival run, Irish horror An Taibhse (The Ghost) has been picked up for worldwide sales by Toronto-based genre specialists Raven Banner and Firebook Entertainment, with a new trailer today teasing a creepy new entry into the folk horror canon.

Executive produced by six-time Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot), An Taibhse is written and directed by John Farrelly and stars Tom Kerrisk and Livvy Hill.

Marketed as “the first Irish language horror film”, the pic follows:

Amid the barren landscape of post-famine Ireland, a father and daughter struggle to survive the brutal winter as caretakers of a remote mansion, only to be driven to the edge of sanity by the horrors lurking within.

Proving no film is safe from the rebooting hands of Hollywood, The Muppets have launched their version of the sci-fi classic "Alien" using the space-traversing swine from "Pigs in Space." While not as serious or spooky as Ridley Scott's newest film in the franchise, "Alien: Look Who's Coming to Dinner" doesn't shy away from puns, violence or (by Muppet standards) salty language. Sadly, James Franco is not involved.

Directed and co-written by long time Muppet collaborator Kirk Thatcher, the spoof is the first episode in a planned comeback for the plucky porkers. A new online series will follow the further adventures of the crew of the S.S. Swinetrek. The three little pigs take on the Oscar winning film "Gravity" next week with "The Gravity of the Situation."
