Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Anything new you're picking up? Trying to finish up a run?

I'm currently playing Lies of P again and am probably going to finish a playthrough. Currently at the Black Rabbit Gang refight and getting my teeth kicked in a little. Maybe I'll start another one or I'll give Thymesia a shot now, which I bought recently.

Here are a couple of videos and video essays I've watched and enjoyed a lot in the past for numerous soulslikes. I can definitely recommend any of them and have sorted them by game. The length can vary a lot, so many of them are probably videos you'd wanna watch/listen to over the span of a couple of days. I've had loads of fun with them and recommend checking out the respective channels for sure.

As you might have guessed, I have a soft spot for Bloodborne and Lies of P wherein my personal standouts would be "Visceral Feminity" - a video essay that deals with Bloodborne's imagery and its parallelity to the female experience - and "How Lies of P Twists Pinocchio's Origins" - a video essay that explores the similarities between the original Pinocchio novel and Lies of P and shows how its lore and world building are translated for the game.

Do feel free to comment your favourite video essays about any of the soulslikes you can think of and are passionate about. I'll add it to the post's body so people have a nice comprehensive list to check out in the future. I'll also pin the post for a couple of weeks for visibility.

Enjoy :)

I have not once actually connected to another player in this game and I do not know why. I have PS+, I have the game in online mode, I even have the "worldwide" option set to be able to connect to literally anyone.

Beckoning Bell never has others players show up (or any "signs" if they are like the NPC summons).

Resonating Bell never summons me anywhere. I don't know if it works like summon signs in DS/ER where another player will see something to summon me where I was standing when I used it, or if it's like the effigies in Elden Ring where you just get summoned if the game finds a match; but I have tried using it around lamps, at boss doors, etc.

I can't even seem to invade anyone! Maybe I have the wrong bell? I have the sinister resonating bell and I get the feeling from the on screen prompt when using it that it's more like the dueling shit from DS where I am not forcing my way in, but being invited. All I know is that I haven't been able to invade with this either.

What gives? I see notes and ghosts all over the place so I know there is still an online presence in the game. Is it because I am on PS5 and not a PS4? Why can I not connect to anyone? 😩

Most of the Bloodborne NPCs come to mind since it's a very tragic game overall. Millicent's in Elden Ring is pretty sad too. The Divine Child of the Rejuvenating Waters in Sekiro has an emotional impact on me too - very cool ending associated with her too

13th-20th March. Snag it while you can if you're interested in a pretty good soulslike make by a non-FromSoft company

People who visit this community regularly probably already know that Lies of P is very near and dear to me. I didn't pay much attention to the game back when it was teased and released since it looked like knock-off Bloodborne and its focus on Pinocchio seemed silly, but I have gotten around to it eventually and can happily claim that it's in my top 3 soulslikes.

For those who have not played the game, the story of the game loosely revolves around the original novel by Carlo Collodi with some minor plot tweaks and reinterpretations of some characters to better fit the narrative. Its setting seems to be heavily inspired by Bloodborne's bleak, thick, dark, and gothic atmosphere, combat mechanics, and speed with a hint of Sekiro mixed in with its high focus on perfect parries and prosthetic arm allowing for dynamic gameplay. Lies of P is the best of both worlds, if you will.

Definitely check the game out if you haven't yet. It might just be the best non-From Software soulslike there currently is. The polish and quality of the game really is a standout - especially for a complete newcomer like Neowiz/Round 8.

I couldn't think of any other game to feature on here, so for the next time: Which Soulslike would you like to see featured next week? An upcoming release? A title many have already played before?

Do let me know!

Just gave the demo a try today and bounced off it hard - immediately uninstalled the demo too because it felt so unfinished and janky lol. Many people seem to be rather excited about the game. I guess the art direction is at least... interesting though not really my cup of tea. Apart from that, I haven't really seen anything that piqued my interest. Seems to be kind of a mesh between a soulslike and something like Darksiders 2 or Diablo with its loot drops and comparing armour pieces. Kind of like Nioh, I think.

Any of you gave the demo a try?
