Bull fucking shit. An anonymous single worker's post on social media holds as much weight as a Radio Free Asia anonymous source, in other words next to worthless. This article is pure speculation and anonymous sources all the way down. Straight up
'unions are bad kids don't you dare try to organize' dogshit. The workers on the ground I have contact with have said the exact opposite of this articles claims. I question the integrity of everyone who had anything to do with the writing or sharing of this trash.
That's a very interesting viewpoint.
I thought this type of publication would have a lot of Trust behind it because it's supposedly focuses on worker rights And it's supposed to be anti-capitalist in nature.
We have seen times where unions did work with companies and screwed their constituents out of a good deal. Unions don't always work for the betterment of everybody since they are susceptible to Elite capture.
I'm aware of this practice and have posted about it regarding the recent NFLPA scandals. As far as I'm aware this isn't the case here.
It angers me because those folks fought hard to win those concessions. They were out there for a week in 100 degree weather, sun blazing down, no shade, no water, picketing. Dealing with reactionaries, Karen's, and their management. Their management wouldn't even negotiate at first, but due to the workers pressure was forced to come to the table.
Labor organizing is a very rare thing in this country. I've worked plenty of shit jobs and never even came close to unionization in any of them. For them to both organize, strike like they did, AND win is something that the left should be praising/encouraging.
Instead this 'Anti-Capitalist Pro Workers Rights journalist' wants to do the exact opposite.
-First they try to fool the reader by mixing up three different strikes/labor negotiations into one as if they're the same thing (they are not).
-Then they try to make it seem like the union wanted to rush negotiations so they could have them go back in for the 4th. Wrong, they were picketing on the 4th, through slight of hand the writer mixes up different situations as the same to fool the reader.
-Not to mention the wreckless speculation taken as fact and the 'anonymous source' issue I've talked about already.
-Lastly the writer wants to poo-poo even modest wage gains. Like of course they should get more, but that's going to take a lot more struggle and time. Does the writer think these corporations are spineless cowards that'll just cave into all demands? Absolutely not the workers are going to have to force out concessions a penny at a time. It's idealistic to think otherwise.
Labor unions themselves won't get us across the finish line. However with the flaccid, unorganized, weak state of the western left we need to take what we can get. These workers risked a lot doing this, through sacrifice and collective struggle got a win for workers rights. Any self-respecting leftist should platform these things as a victory and should be encouraging more of this in the future.
I really appreciate this extra context.
You're right. The Safeway Union fought hard for the gains that they did get and we should be proud that they were able to extract any concessions in the Imperial core.
It sucks they didn't get better than what they did get but the fact they were able to extract anything is better than most workers in the United States get anyway.
I really appreciate you highlighting the specific points of where they were trying to twist and hide things. That'll make it a lot easier for me and hopefully others to identify these type of things in the future.
Completely Fair. I'll keep these things in mind in the future as I read this publication. Thanks for the Insight comrade
