ff8, subjectively the best ff in the series.
That was the first Final Fantasy game I played all the way through. And the first one I owned. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
Note: I was a teenager when that game released, and I related hard to Squall's emo attitude toward everyone and everything. I thought he was so cool. Replaying it as an adult though, I cringe every time Squall has to interact with anyone. He's basically a whiny baby who only has friends because a bunch of people decide to ignore his antisocial tendencies and indulge his emo behavior. Nobody would tolerate him in real life. Why did I like this character?!
Reading your take on Squall is hilarious because I experienced the same thing. As a kid he was the coolest thing ever. Replayed the game as an adult and was like ??? This guy can kick rocks with the way he treats people lol. There is one conversation (on Balamb Garden, I think) where some older person is telling him they remind him of their son or something similar, and he straight up tunes them out as they are talking with his thoughts relaying how little he cares lol.
This was the first game I pirated for my modded psx
I think you misremember being a teenager. As my moody attitude swings would deter all but a select few friends who understood I was going through something.
That, and Squall et al. are child soldiers, kind of depressing business for teenagers
Triple Triad alone is reason enough people should appreciate FF8.
Also the soundtrack is one of the best in the series.
That is quite a hot take. It is my least favorite in the series after 13.
Yeah, and I prefer 13 to 8.
2 is down there with them though
For years I thought the same of 2, but now I think that was likely partially due to the frustration of playing a roughly translated NES ROM back in the day. The re-released version from a few years ago was actually pretty enjoyable with the exception of the final dungeon being filled with instant death enemies.
I liked the plot, but the gameplay was in desperate need of an overhaul.
Also, if you're trying to explore and finish up side quests on disc 3, but you accidentally clip Lunatic Pandora on the world map, it puts you into a linear sequence that runs all the way through to the end of disc 4 and the game with no 'press X to enter this location' prompt or warning that this is a point of no return.
But I did really like the story. If anyone has a mod suggestion for something that makes the junction system not be absurdly broken I'd be interested.
Honestly, the built-in cheats in the steam version improve it.
I would love a proper remake of FF8!
I’m skeptical they could do a proper remake. The FF7 remakes, while they do have some fun bits and highlights, are so unbearably silly they were an absolute slog to get through. And, maybe this is me going old, the combat system is so flashy I can’t tell what’s going on half the time.
The amount of times sephiroth is just dangled in front of you pissed me off. Not 10 minutes in its like "ooooohhhh here's scary sword boy, look at him!!!!"
God I hated that so much. Im getting angry just thinking about it. The pacing in the original game to introduce him was what made him such a legendary bad guy, especially thinking Shinra is the main thing in the game, and then, oh, wait, nope, who tf is this guy? Oh, he's an evil piece of crap, got it.
Nope, end of the first remake game, not even 5 hours of the original story, here's the main villain in the game as the final boss. Ruined the whole thing for me.
I haven't played either of the 7 remakes and though they sound cool, I'm kind of not interested in going back there. Almost like I loved it too much. 8 though, could well be worth a rego.
Second remake game was decent. Part one is extremely meh.
Yeah, that was the vibe I got. I don't think I'll bother. So many games in the backlog anyway.
It's the one that needs it the most, because it has many problems that are entirely fixable.
I thought ff8 magic system was tedious. It really turned me off the game.
Who needs magic when you can triple triad your game into a broken mess right out the gate.
I agree
Ehh, imo, ff really went downhill when they introduced the turn timer
