I had heard before that late 80s early 90s cartoons would push it and see what they could get away with e.g. Rocko's Modern Life.

It was also done to give the adults who are inevitably going to be stuck watching these cartoons something to enjoy.

That's why adults say modern cartoons suck because most of them no longer have these adult jokes sprinkled throughout.

It's not as pronounced but Disney definitely still slips some stuff in.

Also fucking PBS! the kids love this show called "Rosie's Rules" and on one episode the power's out so mom goes to get new batteries for the flashlight and comes back I to the room proudly announcing "I found the batteries, in my sock drawer, just like I thought." 🤣

I was stunned like "did she really just...?!"

For reals. 90's cartoons were wild by most of today's standards. I've still seen some... questionable things, and it's even more subversive than it used to be. Maybe it's partly why I'm not as senstive to 'weird stuff' as an adult.
