Hi,

I'm a big fan of podcasts and I've been enjoying "Against the Rules" and "Darknet Diaries" lately.

Now, I want to hear your recommendations! What podcasts do you love and why? Let's build an epic list of must-listen podcasts together.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I like listening to historical podcasts, and my favorites are "The History of Rome" (which has finished) and its followup "The History of Byzantium" and "Hardcore History" . I've heard good things about "Revolutions" by the creator of "The History of Rome" but I haven't checked it out yet.

Also I've been enjoying "Fall of Civilizations" a lot, but so far have only listened to a few of the episodes.

[-] Sausage@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm a big fan of Hardcore History so will check out the others.

I also really enjoy You're Dead To Me - different topics from history with an expert and a comedian.

[-] CORaven@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I have listened to a few of the "Fall of Civilizations". The quality of the production is very impressive.

If you are a fan of history podcasts, the BBC have a series "You're Dead to Me" which is a history podcast with a lot of British humour added in.

"Gone Medieval" is another history podcast by History Hits, but the quality off each show is very hit or miss. Quality of the topic can be lackluster sometimes and even the sound quality of guests can be poor. The topics are all medieval and can be more UK centric. Still good and worth a listen.

Hardcore History. The come out a few times a year and are incredibly long (some episodes are five hours), but listening to Dan Carlin talk is really engaging. Plus he has one of those voices you can fall asleep to.
It Could Happen Here. Keeps my righteous anger at ‘the man’ topped up.
Criminal Records. Fun crime podcast focussed on the weird and less heard of crimes in history.

[-] Jode@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

Behind the bastards, Self explanatory.

Ear hustle, A podcast about prison made by prisoners in prison.

Knowledge Fight, a couple of dudes who like to sit around and talk about Alex Jones. Essentially deconstructing his bullshit.

[-] smallerdemon@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

There's a great Discord community for Knowledge Fight too. Note that there are two of them, and one of them is a LOT more fun than the other.

[-] Tahssi@yiffit.net 2 points 1 year ago

Dungeons and Daddies, a chaotic and hilarious Dungeons and Dragons podcast. It does have some good emotional parts as well.

[-] plum@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I’d strongly recommend Dungeons & Daddies (not a BDSM podcast, it is indeed Dungeons & Dragons). It’s about 4 dads trying to save their sons in another realm.

Super digestible, not TOO strict about rules, and I die of laughter anytime Beth May says anything.

I am surprised some of the big ones haven’t been mentioned yet -

  • Radiolab - Not really sure how to describe this podcast. It’s superb journalism at its core. They do both short and multi-episode long form about a variety of topics from science to history to current events. For example, how dinosaurs died when the asteroid hit earth, the story of a Guantanamo convict with the same name as the host, and how poorly computer databases are designed for names that are outside the norm.

  • Planet Money - An excellent economics podcast where complex topics are distilled in fairly short episodes. They recently released a completely AI generated episode which was incredibly scary with how good it was.

  • More Perfect - Everything the US Supreme Court

  • Serial - One multi-episode series at a time about complicated criminal cases.

  • What Roman Mars can Learn about Con Law - Started off during the Trump Presidency when tough questions about the US constitution are being asked given his penchant for pushing the legal boundaries and norms.

[-] Panamanap@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago
  • Hidden brain for psychology
  • 99 percent invisible for interesting stories of stuff.
[-] ofcourse@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Mental Illness Happy Hour by Paul Gilmartin, if you like a podcast that talks honestly about the struggles of mental health.

Paul interviews a different person each week and discuss their journeys on dealing with their mental health. Paul is also been very open about his struggles. It helps that he is a comedian and has a subtle but dark humor that I enjoy.

I also really like the short surveys that he reads and people have filled out on his website because they make me feel connected that I’m not alone.

[-] curiosityLynx@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Massively depends on what you're into.

That said, I follow these podcasts:

News related comedy:

  • Wait Wait Don't Tell Me from NPR
  • Friday Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4
  • The Bugle
  • Breaking The News from BBC Scotland

DnD:

  • Dicefunk (I recommend seasons 3 & 4 in particular)

Puns:

  • Punwatch
  • (also The Bugle sometimes)

Science communication:

  • The Infinite Monkey Cage
  • Daniel And Jorge Explain The Universe
  • The Curious Cases Of Rutherford & Fry
  • Supermassive
  • A Problem Squared
  • Creature Feature
  • My Favourite Theorem

About Media:

  • Failure To Launch, about TV pilots that failed to become full series
  • Get Played, originally called "How Did This Get Played?" and focused on the worst games ever made, now about games in general
  • Dream Factory, about plots of non-existing movies

Security/Hacking:

  • Malicious Life
  • Darknet Diaries
  • Human Factor Security

History:

  • You're Dead To Me
[-] SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Behind the Bastards, a deep dive into the various shit people of history. Episode one is Saddam Hussein: Erotic Novelist.

There's nearly 700 episodes, and I've yet to run tio a dud. Loads of great guests. My only gripe is that it's a touch Amerocentric, but other than that I'd recommend it to basically anyone. Not kid friendly, in case that wasn't obvious.

[-] nicktron@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think it’s only fair to add that this podcast has a very left leaning bias. I’m not saying that that is bad, just being objective.

No such thing as a fish, funny and educational

[-] Spudger 2 points 1 year ago

I'll second NSTAAF and add Something Rhymes with Purple, Poppy Hillstead Has Entered The Chat, We Have Ways of Making You Talk and More or Less: Behind the Stats. All very different but excellent in their chosen subjects.

[-] RandomDude@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

I guess it totally depends on what you’re into. I listen to:

The Money Guy show - hands down the best personal finance content. American based, but the logic still applies.

Waveform Podcast: MKBHD tech podcast

Surveillance Report: Techlore privacy/security based podcast

[-] ofcourse@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Throughline has been my favorite since it launched a few years ago. The hosts take a deep dive into the historical events leading up to topical events of the present weaving a thread through them, hence the name.

Some of the examples are the history of policing in the US and how capitalism became the dominant economic system.

I cannot recommend this podcast enough!

[-] dungeonsoup@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Big fan of Darknet Diaries.

[-] Shadocvao@feddit.uk 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

History:

  • History of Rome
  • History of Byzantium (spiritual successor to HoR) - ongoing but with an end planned
  • British History Podcast (in depth) - ongoing but with an end planned
  • Revolutions (various revolutions from HoR
  • Blowback
  • Hardcore History
  • Fall of Civilizations

Horror:

  • Magnus Archives
  • The Lovecraft Investigations - unsure if finished

True Crime:

  • Bear Brook
  • Dirty John

Others:

  • *Shut up and Sit Down (Boardgames)"
  • Beef and Dairy Network (Comedy)
  • Outer Reach (Sci-Fi)

Bold = Ongoing with no end planned

[-] Chetzemoka@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I listen to a bunch of accident and disaster podcasts. Black Box Down about plane crashes, Great Disasters, and Well There's Your Problem. All quite different in tone, but all informative and entertaining.

Movies and TV discussions: Ty & That Guy (if you're an Expanse fan, you'll love it), Cinema of Meaning, and Too Scary; Didn't Watch.

Space nerd shit: Space Rocket History (I wanna adopt this host and his wife, they're so damn sweet), Space Nuts

Medical nerd shit: This Podcast Will Kill You, EMCrit Podcast

[-] kartonrealista@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The Urbanist Agenda - urban planning, urbanism, micromobility, etc.

[-] sagamoschoauiagwo@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

Currently listening to the „The New Gurus“ by BBC4 and enjoying it a lot. 30min-episodes on - you guessed it - modern gurus, like pick up artists, conspiracy theorists, productivity coaches…

„Darknet Diaries“ is also a favorite of mine.

[-] Trance@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago
  1. The Wolf and Owl Podcast
  2. The Off-menu Podcast.
[-] falinter@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago

The skeptics guide to the universe and The Omnibus are two of my favorites.

[-] bl00dmeat@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Darknet Diaries is my all time favorite! There's a couple other story-centric security podcasts I enjoy as well.

Cyber (by Vice)
Malicious Life (by Cybereason)

[-] Generic_Handel@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

DNA: ID

It's a podcast about some of the murders and Jane/John Does solved by forensic genealogy.
It's very in depth about each case and quite interesting.

[-] ds12@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Freakonomics Radio with a lot of interesting insights to things in life.

Big Biology for any Biology nerds. A lot of interviews with researchers.

This Is Actually Happening with some absolutely wild stories.

[-] Satiric_Weasel@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

The Nosleep Podcast (Horror).

Welcome To Nightvale (Comedy/Horror)

Alice Isn't Dead (Horror/Mystery/Road trip?)

Conan O'Brian Needs A Friend (Comedy)

The Three Questions With Andy Richter (Interview/Comedy. Can occasionally get kinda heavy)

Abject Suffering (Comedy. The Same Two Guys From W. O. F. F., but they're looking at bad/WEIRD Games)

GM Word Of The Week (history)

[-] smallerdemon@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Trashfuture is a great podcast. It is, ostensibly, a tech-pessimist podcast, but every now and then there are some great UK-centric politics that bleed through since they are based in the UK. All of the host are kind of leftist weirdo Marxists and they really take the piss out of "technology companies" that are nothing more than shell games of moving things around that have been around forever and calling it a tech company. One of my favorites.

[-] gina@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago
  • Ologies with Ali Ward - really fun if you like interviews with experts on their areas of expertise (lots of biological/sociological topics)
  • Normal Gossip - recommended with the caveat that I have not really enjoyed season 3, but seasons 1 and 2 were great and I’m hopeful for future seasons. Just silly gossip stories about people you don’t know.
  • 60 Songs That Explain the 90s
  • Hit Parade - Music History
  • 30 for 30 - I don’t really follow sports, but I really like this podcast anyway
  • Star Trek: The Pod Directive - Probably doesn’t need a lot of explanation
[-] kikuchiyo@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

-Last Podcast on The Left - crime and comedy is a perfect mix for me.

-Bow and Blade and The Medieval Podcast - I love medieval history

-Dan Carlin's Hardcore History -general history (waiting for another episode is like waiting for Christmas)

-Unsolved Misteries Podcast- I love the TV show and that podcast is great too :)

[-] CmdrS@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago
  1. The Dollop - A history podcast done by comedians
  2. Jordan, Jesse, Go! - Interviews done by comedians
  3. Stop Podcasting Yourself - Interviews done by comedians
  4. Dumb People Town - Current news stories commented on by comedians
  5. Ear Biscuits - Rhett and Link podcast
  6. Do You Need a Ride? - Comedians give car rides to comedians in need of a ride - usually to/from the airport
  7. Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me - NPR quiz show
  8. Star Trek The Next Conversation - 2 TV writers, 1 has seen Trek, 1 has not
  9. This American Life - True stories
[-] soollik@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I'm a fan of "here's a bunch of random (science) facts" type of podcasts.

  • Let's Learn Everything,
  • A Podcast of Unnecessary Detail,
  • Ologies with Alie Ward,
  • Secretly Incredibly Fascinating,
  • Ridiculous History

Are the ones I listen to.

[-] fstrelok@midwest.social 1 points 1 year ago

Been diving through the huge repository of Last Podcast on the Left episodes lately, my most recent binge. I regularly listen to Darknet Diaries as well.

[-] calhoon2005@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It's an old one, but Stuff You Should Know. I'm listening chronologically, a couple a day (I do a lot of driving for work) and I'm still only up to about mid-2018. The hosts are so easy to listen too, and I really enjoy their humour.

[-] saucyloggins@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I love Milk Street. NPR cooking basically. Everyone has to cook at some point right?? I put it on when there’s new episodes while I work because it’s not narrative. I can tune it in and out easily.

[-] arcrust@lemmy.fmhy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Ologies by Ally Ward.

She basically interviews random professors and authors. Anyone who studies something. And then asks all the dumb questions that I'd be too embarrassed to ask, in order to understand what it is that they study, why they study it, what we know about the topic.

She's got several hundred episodes from black holes and dark matter, to fire ecology, to (one of my favorites) Ferroequinology (the study of iron horses, trains).

Really great energy, great questions. Highly recommend.

[-] Underbroen@feddit.dk 1 points 1 year ago

I'll join the chorus of No Such Thing As A Fish and add a couple history podcasts: Our Fake History (de-bunking popular myths) and Betwixt the Sheets (everything sex and gender). The backlog of now defunct Futility Closet is also worth checking out.

[-] Facelikeapotato@aussie.zone 1 points 1 year ago

Anything from Aaron Mahnke (or his company Grim & Mild). I especially enjoy Lore and Cabinet of Curiosities. For true crime, I like Murder, Mysteries and Makeup or The Casual Criminalist.

[-] Thanks4Nothing@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

A couple interesting options: Good Job Brain - always an interesting listen. They deep dive into different topics from a trivia standpoint.. super interesting.

Behind the Bastards - looks at bad people throughout history.

[-] standardissue@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

My top podcasts lately:

  • QAnon Anonymous: started out chronicling the QAnon freakshow but moved towards more general deep dives into modern and past conspiracy movements

  • Minion Death Cult: laughing at right wing comment sections

  • This Is Revolution: great leftist interview/discussion

  • Joy Tactics: extremely funny stuff

  • Uhh Yeah Dude: one of the longest running podcasts out (13 years) and still funny as hell

I dip into some other podcasts from time to time like Chapo Trap House, Comedy Bang Bang, and Vice's CYBER.

I also listen to some paranormal/weird shows that I can recommend if anyone is interested.

[-] sneezycat@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

I don't usually listen to podcasts, but Gospels of the Flood is one I found about lately.

It's made by people that worked on The Talos Principle (they have a custom soundtrack and everything).

Really interesting if you like philosophy, religion and some fiction :)

[-] edgerunnergit@lemmyrs.org 1 points 1 year ago

The Anthropocene Reviewed - It's not an informative Podcast, but a series of stories told by John Green. They're short. Often consisting of one or two stories within 20-30 minutes. But I've loved listening to everyone of them. I'd give it 4 and half stars.

[-] SteelCorrelation@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago

I like podcasts on Stoicism, technical writing, and self-hosting. I also listen to a podcast on folklore that’s pretty fun.

[-] WardCannon@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I too enjoy a lot of podcasts on stoicism, have you listened to Philosophy as a Way of Life by Massimo Pigliucci? It's hour long discussions with Massimo and guests answering audience questions at the end, can get really interesting

[-] zekiz@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I can really recommend "Darknet Diaries". It's just sooo good. I've also subbed to his patreon. To start I can recommend the two parter "Xbox Underground".
