I'm not sure if this is the right community, but just wanted to spark discussion and I love hearing people's different experiences

Inspired to ask because elsewhere I was telling a story about how I got invited to poker night at Jehovah's Witnesses one time, and none of it made any sense to me. First of all we were not supposed to be having a party and listening to music, nor gambling, nor drinking according to the rules of JW which were outwardly acknowledged.

But they had come up with all kinds of outs and justifications, and minor rule bendings to justify basically doing all of that. I'm sitting there like thanks for including me guys but this is just a weird scene.

You're all running off to the laundry room to make alcoholic drinks and coming back to mutually joke about how ya merely went to freshen your Kool-Aid. It was very mentally taxing

Not exactly weird or baffling, but interesting. I’ve been in the punk scene for 30yrs. When I first started going at 15 the “all ages” venue was a dive bar the made the minors walk through a dog kennel that kept them out of the “bar”, but on the other side was the pit where everyone was drinking anyway and the cigarette smoke was so thick you couldn’t see the drummer. I’ve seen people shit on stage, get blowjobs on stage, had a fiddle player helicopter his wang over my head during a solo, saw a guy run through the pit with a live chainsaw, another dance with a meat cleaver & claw hammer, people bash each other with fluorescent light bulbs, a rusty scythe, a leather with broken glass glued to the sleeves, taken an empty bottle of Jack randomly chucked to my face, been knocked out with a spin kick, seen a drunk dude wander out of the pit with someone else’s tooth stuck in their cheek, and once molly-whopped a bonehead with a lock & chain. I’ve been fortunate to have lived and seen some crazy shit.

But last year I was at a punk show and for the first time realized truly how old a lot of us are getting. There’s folks in their 60s still moshing right next to 14yos. But for all I’ve seen, something that really sticks with me is the mom who walked her maybe 5yo daughter to the edge of the stage and, after a little hesitancy, the little gal crowd surfed. And the crowd responded. It was still a wild mix of humanity, a bunch of crusty strangers in hyper-aggressive clothing, tattoos, and eyeliner. But now we’ve got this precious little soul getting to join the fray, and while the band continued to rip, the pit continued to circle, and the cheap shots continued to be pounded, the human tempest made sure she got to enjoy her trip across the pit safely back to her dad. And you could see how thrilled she was.

Not a lot surprises me anymore, but casting your child into a sweaty sea of weirdos and trusting they’ll do the right thing, and a bunch of half-drunk, ritualistically violent strangers being the right people to make sure they do stay safe is… heartwarming? Still kinda weird.

I can't think of a weird or baffling event of my own, but yours was definitely weird. Maybe not for the reasons you think.

I know some JWs, and while they definitely don't gamble, the rest of that doesn't add up at all. They party and drink and listen to music, openly. I mean they won't get blackout drunk, but frankly neither will I.

How old were you guys? Maybe they had super overly strict parents?

Back in college I bought weed from a townie. Starting January 1st anytime you bought from him he would include a raffle ticket in your bag of weed. On 4/20 he threw a big 420 party in a public park which was my dealer and all his other customers, which was a lot of other townies and a handful of smaller dealers that source from him. He had a bunch of games and stuff organized and everyone was smoking weed just out in public (this was well before weed was legalized in most places).

This one guy who I think was a dealer introduced himself as "Uncle Eddie," which sounds like the name of your weird relative that nobody lets near the kids at Thanksgiving, but I digress. He had the words "PUNK" and "ROCK" tattooed on the knuckles of each of his hands. Randomly throughout the conversation he'd tell you to pound it and offer a fist. After awhile I figured out that if he liked or respected something you said, he'd let you pound the "ROCK" fist, if he didn't like it he'd have you pound the "PUNK" fist. I did not feel comfortable at any point during our conversation.

Anyway, the last event was the raffle and me and my roommates won the prize of a quarter pound of weed. I distinctly remember my dealer handing it to me and saying "congratulations now you're a felon, man." It was the dirtiest, reggiest, seed-filled bag of weed I'd ever seen in my life. If I had to guess it was probably about 50% seeds by weight. We tried to smoke some when we got home but it was so awful. It made some pretty decent brownies though.

Most people just toss the shake they accumulate over the year, but this guy turns it into a God damn Gala!

Maybe not quite what you were looking for, but my first year in college, some students held a “Love Your Body” parade, which involved students marching around campus completely nude. Of course, the only people who participated were those most people probably would have passed on seeing naked. Just a whole bunch of folks with body image issues (mostly women, but a few men too) and way too much courage. Bizarre.

As a 20 yo country kid living in an urban area for school, I got into hard drugs (sober for some time now).

On one occasion I met up with some folks in a crack house to make a purchase. I sat by myself in the front of the living room. It was divided from the rest of the room by a pile of furniture with blankets wrapped to make a wall, like a crack head blanket fort.

A kitten came up to be meowing very insistently, and I picked it up. It furiously licked my fingers, which had crack soaked into them (it melts and if you stupidly touch it then, it soaks in). I yelled over the blankets, "hey I didn't know you had kittens." The proprietor yelled back, "yeah dont worry about dropping anything here, theyll clean it up fast." It was a house full of crack addicted kittens.

Was this your dealer?

I hate that this is the first response i read. But it's such a ridiculous premise that i'm going to mentally dismiss it as fake, which - because of the ridiculous concept - i can do very easily. Please don't try to convince me it's real.

Attending a Catholic funeral service for a religious family member. The strangeness hits a bit harder as an atheist trans person.

I have social anxiety and some kind of high-functioning AuDHD going on. That makes most social events weird and baffling to me to be fair.

But since you want stories here's a couple that are short and sweet if a bit loosey goosey on the social element:

One time on a bus, late at night, a very drunk individual was encouraging conversation (if only because most of the other passengers weren't sure what he would do if we didn't respond). He was drinking something simultaneously black and cloudy out of a plastic bottle and offering people swigs. People didn't go that far into joining in, hence weird rather than actually scary. I may have said "no thanks I'm not sure what that is", and thankfully he took it well.

Another time, as a kid with family on holiday somewhere. I forget exactly where. A shop in a high street with windows all covered with special offers and an opening time that was pretty soon. We think: "Why not?". A crowd had gathered by the opening time. The doors opened. The crowd flooded in with us fairly near the front.

The shop was completely empty save for a few guys in suits in formation at the back, and one by the door who'd opened them. Sleazy sales types, maybe religious types. It was hard to be sure, but clearly some kind of bait and switch. Thus began a wave of people trying to get out as the back of the crowd was still trying to get in.

This timeline.
