Man, I remember when this meme was new. Mainly because I also bought a brand new bugeye WRX about that time. So jeez, this meme is just shy of 25 years old. Wow.
Owning a car you actually love is pretty great. After a shitty day at work, there's something awesome about walking out to the parking lot and seeing my WRX waiting for me. I'll be the first to bitch about how America is too car-centric, but we really knock it out of the park when we get it right.
And yes, I'm aware it's a Japanese car, I'm more referring to the owning/operating experience as an American. Which sadly seems to be going away. Modern cars feel more like an app that just happens to have wheels. But that's a topic for another thread.
For the vast majority of people a car is just transportation. You go from A to B. Some might couple that with making it a bourgeoise status symbol, the expensive truck mallcruiser or BMW.
But there are still quite a few who appreciate the actual drive.
And you’re right. So many cars now completely insulate the driver from the road and the operation of the vehicle, like driving a couch with the TV remote.
And it totally sucks for those of us that do really love the experience of driving. O8 was the last year Subaru used a mechanically linked clutch with real force, after it became a soft little lever you moved an inch to get neutral. Then they got rid of it all together. If a manufacturer produced a $20k sub 3000lbs 4 cyl that's fun to drive with a true mechanical clutch and as few computers as possible, I would get a loan for one. Used options are getting limited and in worse and worse condition.
Absolutely. A manual, simple 4 cylinder would be great.
But that doesn’t have telemetry they can sell, features you have to subscribe to, and branded trim levels you have to pay extra to get.

You will have few to no choices then. Telemetry or “black box” is in pretty much every single modern vehicle. Subscriptions to Sirius, Spotify, or your heated seat (fuck you BMW) are the norm or trying to be so. A la carte options died decades ago, and then they killed the manual transmission even in halo cars.
I feel ya, man. This is some bullshit. The only choice is to build your own car or try to keep an old one alive.

For me it was actually going from an NA Subaru to a Chevy bolt with premier trim.
Never had such a high level trim in any car and the quick acceleration of the ev makes it super fun to drive at least on the highway, its pretty horrible on turns and I probably won't ever track it like I did the Subaru. But I started to get into auto detailing when I got it and its such a good time to unwind outside in the evening with a beer and pressure washer. Then getting in to a clean car is very nice.
The bolt is such a goofy car to me, like I feel all cool and speedy driving it, then get out and look at it like damn I was driving this funny thing
That's how I feel about my leaf. I had a 4th gen Honda Civic for years that was just fun to drive in any road with some movement.
Now I've got the leaf and it's like, I'll never understand the critique of EVs not being "masculine" enough or whatever. This thing flies when I want to send it. And yeah the beefier ev suspension makes it a little lame in the corners, but it's still a way more fun to drive care than any ice equivalent.
And yeah, from the outside it's a total granny car. But at least it's got a hatchback
I drive an 06 Forester manual when I'm not using the work truck. It's my baby NA wrx with a wagon back lol. After a day of hauling the trailer around with an f350 it feels like a little sports car, and now that it's not my daily I wind that little bitch way up before I shift now.

Cause that particular tears of joy emoji only became standardized in Unicode 6.0, 2010. It was presumably around a bit before that but nobody except the Japanese really did a lot of emoji stuff much before that (iirc Google and Apple only started adding the first emoji to their keyboards 2007-08).
Either way would find it very interesting if somebody was already using the emoji way before that, or the text area of the picture went through multiple iterations.
If you haven't seen it, the video about the lady that had bought an RX-7 new back in the day and her saying goodbye to it as she decides to stop driving is amazing. So cool of Mazda to buy that car back for display.

Late gen 1 Impreza was still the best. Hawkeye close second, though the Saab 9-2x might have beat all the second gens in looks and interior.
I always wanted to make a 22b clone out of my GF, but the rust got to it before I’d learned to weld well enough to save it. The tan interior was a mess too and really sucked.
I still have the EJ 22 and 5 speed swap parts in my garage waiting for an OBS to show up in need of a swap.
I’m so bad about this. If I make a big aesthetic change to an area in my house I’ll spend the next several hours to days standing quietly in the space just, enjoying it? If I reorganize my pantry I’ll just go stand in there and study the space over and over, it just feels good

That feeling only really happens a few times in your life. Even when you get a new practical car doesn't do it. It's when you buy something so cool to you that it's surreal. Doesn't have to be expensive or over the top. It's the one that speaks to you. Just let the feeling wash over you and enjoy the moment.
Don't fall in love with something that can't, or won't, love you back.
A WRX will always love you... if you give it the love they deserve. (If you don't your gearbox will explode and your head gaskets will disintegrate).
Love is oil every 3k. And some swear by the Italian tuneup from time to time.

I generally agree with this sentiment, but driving a manual car really is awesome and I fantasize about buying that new Z, despite my overwhelmingly anticapitalist, anti-retail therapy views.
