Between myself and my gf we have a bunch of these from different years. I suspect they were "food stamps" or commemorative tokens but Google is failing me with regard to the actual history. Anyone old enough to remember who knows?

Interesting - apparently, there was a series of Red River Dollars. I have yet to find any information on what the heck they were used for.

All well before my time, sadly.

Yes, I found that as well. It doesn't tell me why they were issued. Looking for a Free Press article or something describing more detail.

I just remembered that my library account lets me search newspapers, and found this in the WFP from October 4, 1978:
