I really don’t have a single favorite. I use them in situations where they’re the most suitable for my needs and my personal preferences. I think overall KDE/Plasma is the most versatile and flexible, customizable and theme-able. Pantheon is simple and polished, though you’ve got to install the extensions and tweaks; I really don’t know what the devs think with having no minimize button. It’s like a weird fetish that they force on all new installs. But once you add the extras, it’s a beautiful and simple interface. Bodhi’s Moksha is very weird but has its own charm. Also customizable beyond what most people even would know what to do with, but the thing I like most about the distro on the whole is it will run on lower end systems and yet still offer the kind of GUI that usually demands better resources. None of the others I’ve tried run as smoothly on equivalent low end hardware. So that’s its biggest advantage.

Like I said, each for their own scenario.

Using a few on different systems. KDE Plasma on one laptop my high end one that is pretty much my main daily machine. I also have Moksha on a Bodhi netbook. I have an ElementaryOS install so that’s running Pantheon. And finally, I have the Gnome / “Cosmic” in Pop - though I’ve yet to see it be much more than just a finely tuned Gnome.

I loved the ease of batch files in DOS - I guess it’s mostly because I used them since the early 90s in abundance. I haven’t yet gotten around to learning the best equivalent in Linux.

I’m getting Flatland vibes.

Nah, that’s not what I mean. I’m not opposed to those things, I guess I just think that things should get the time and attention based on how important they are. I agree that these things would be nice, but I don’t think the developers are deliberately keeping these things the way they are out of a sense of honor and tradition; rather I’ve just figured they always have something that’s more pressing to focus on.

This drivel - okay not entirely, but I’m making a point - is all the wrong attitudes. “People like Windows, let’s make Linux more like Windows so people will accept it.”

We are not in a popularity contest. Linux is great - nay, extraordinary, phenomenal - because it has most of its shit together. Priorities, functionality, efficiency. If most people are not up to the task of learning something, that’s their problem. And yeah, that’s most people. In case the author of this article hadn’t noticed, the vast majority of people are, unfortunately, lazy and stupid. I’m not saying it’s always their faults but that’s not the issue. We don’t lower ourselves down to meet them where they are. If Linux remains only a tiny portion of the ecosystem, and needs to keep being the thing for only geeks (translation, got good grades in school, enjoy learning things, challenge themselves, etc.) then why does there seem to be this perception that that needs to change? Quite the opposite; the small bit of mainstream corporate elements that have become involved have only demonstrated they’ll immediately enshittify it, because that’s what they do.

Let Linux continue to be the fringe ecosystem for geeks. Why do we need morons to enjoy using it? Why is this a problem?

Yeah those lyrics were derived from Ecclesiastes.

Even so, it doesn’t really jive; circles may be a new age thing, but new age isn’t a circle thing. Linking it to new age has to apply an attribute of new age itself otherwise it’s a dumb reference.

Interesting. I'm sure heat and battery life are noticeably affected. If not very noticeably, I think significantly anyhow I recently got some Galaxy Note 10" 2014 units, and I am trying to get the very best out of it. I hadn't even known about them. The early Galaxy Note phones were terrific, but still a phone size. Then there are the Galaxy Tab models which basically deals with the size issue but not really designed specifically for what I wanted. This thing is just a very enlarged Note 4. On a couple of them, I put TWRP and custom ROM, while on one of them I kept the stock ROM with its last update, bringing it to Android 5.x. It runs the old school Adobe PS Touch, Snapseed, Sketchbook, S-Note, and a handful of other graphics apps. They all run beautifully and it's my almost-perfect art device. Rooted and debloated, of course. I'm gonna see how these modified units do on eBay.

I think my long-winded rambling point is that rather than kill your battery and possibly cause severe wear on your device, maybe find one that can use a custom ROM, or at least Root and optimizing by shutting off tons of bloat.

Damn fine turn of phrase!

Even more, resent those who do have it and want to ruin it for them.

That’s pretty cool. I will say that a little productivity is better than none.

Hey, so I have a bunch of items that won't install, saying they're not compatible with my device. Thing is, they were all installed prior to my doing a reset. I just needed to get a fresh clean start after lots of testing stuff cluttered things.

OK so here are things to note: I'm using a Moto g stylus 5g 2023 (XT2315-1) genenv. Android 13. I have TWRP setup as my recovery, and I'm rooted with Magisk which is up to date.

I did not make any upgrades or downgrades of Android, I simple reset. Most things are working fine, but just some APKs won't install.

It is possible that I had previously had an LSposed (Xposed variant) module installed which dealt with this; all it is, is an arbitrary minAPI designation but in no way actually has a compatibility problem. But try as I might, I don't remember specifically installing a module to resolve this. Rather, I suspect perhaps it was dealt with inadvertently by something I happened to install. ¿maybe?

If anyone knows the solution to this, I'd be much-preesh.

Hey all,

This is probably a very easy one for folks here. It’s been quite some time since I’ve done anything professionally but I was for a long time. Basically, for a while, my systems have experienced intermittent issue that for approximately 30 seconds, can’t get any WAN activity. I can still communicate with other systems within my network. - this is a home situation. The only thing that changed sort of around when this started was I configured my two access points as a mesh - pseudo, since they’re not actually mesh technically. Like, I just made same SSIDs, but different channels. This way I could get around and my devices would hop. And it’s worked nicely. Only issue has been occasionally a device tries to hang on desperately which I know is like the most common problem, but I am gonna play with signal strength if the APs support modifying that.

Anyway, I’m getting off topic. But yeah, that was the only thing that changed but I really think it’s just a coincidence. It’s definitely not the wifi itself because the problem occurred on a wired machine as well.

My setup is I have the cable device in bridge mode and I have a Sonicwall as my router. I also have a site-to-site VPN with another Sonicwall at a remote location for a variety of purposes. That setup has been on and stable for like 15 years almost, and it’s fine.

So, really my first idea is I want to run software that can continually test the connection for like 12 hours, and log when the connection goes down and for how long. Obviously I thought of just running a ping, but I wanted to know if there’s anything that will try varying destinations over time, and track the results so I can analyze for more than just how long and when. Also I don’t know if some servers might misconstrue a persistent ping for many hours as a possible DDoS bot and knock me off, so I figured varying the destination has the added benefit of making sure the test is as reliable as possible.

If I’m gonna figure out what’s wrong, and if it’s the cable device I want to be able to just tell level 2 support my results so they’ll just swap it out quickly.

Anyway, sorry for long post but I imagine they come much longer here sometimes. If anyone has ideas as far as having seen this kind of thing, and also if there’s any FOSS software I could run to test and analyze. I prefer something easy please :-). I’d like to run the tests on two systems concurrently to see how they compare. I’ve got a windows 7 machine and a Linux machine. The Linux is on WiFi and the Win is wired.

Also if this doesn’t belong here, I apologize; it looked kosher according to the sidebar.

Thanks folks.

P.S. oooh also, if there’s an app for Android that can join the test as well, I’d love that. I have piles of Android devices so I would like to see how they fair, as well.

In keeping with Dan’s pattern from the beginning of subverting anticipations - as in, Brita and Jeff kissing for his assignment, Jeff and Annie kissing for the debate - I think it would be perfect for the movie to establish Jeff and Annie are already married. Maybe they started dating a few years after the finalé.

What do y'all think?

She’s already wrapped S2 of Ted, and clearly she likes working with Seth, so since Lysella stayed on board in the end, wouldn’t it be awesome if she became a recurring character or even a cast member?

Hi all,

I have a Moto G Stylus 5G. I acquired it as part of a Lot. Since it's in great condition I decided to make use of it. One of the first things it did was upgrade from Android 13 to 14. Well, some of my essential apps can't run on 14 so how can I undo the upgrade? I just want to roll back to 13, or alternatively, install the stock 13 via recovery etc.

This would really be of immense use to me. Thanks.

I have an A7 Lite and I’m just getting sick of the lag and sluggishness. I had done a lot of research prior to buying it, and was led to believe it could be optimized enough to run really nicely.

Well it turns out that any rare successful ROM replacement procedures are long gone with no live file links and not a single coherent procedure instruction. So despite it being theoretically doable, there isn’t a solid document with accompanying files available. I have spent many months looking for something that isn't obsolete, incomplete or missing accompanying files.

So… what I need is something around that size +/- a little. So like 8"-11" range. I want a long lasting battery and a decent enough CPU, RAM, GPU arrangement to handle most basic tasks such as videos, photoshop and the occasional game - without any stuttering or hanging due to latency.

Ideally, I’d really like to be able to do a custom ROM if I should so desire. This isn’t urgent but in my experience with a dozen different test cases, a slimmer ROM make a crazy improvement in performance (seriously, it's astonishing how much faster most devices perform with a slimmed ROM) . However, given I’d likely wind up going with a Samsung I’d want the S-Pen to work nicely. I really don’t like how bloated One-UI is, but it would seem I’d be stuck with it unless there are ROMs that integrate their S-Pen utilities. I actually quite like them.

So good performance but don’t need the best or even close to the best. Just not the bargain basement slug that is the Mediatek inside the A7 Lite. It’s honestly shameful.

Oh and just in case they’ve started to fuck around with this, I need a microSD slot.

Sorry for being so verbose but I wanted to be as clear about what I wanna avoid as what I am looking for.

Edit: some grammar and clarifications.

There are some builds here or there posted on XDA, but they all have dead links. I’m still looking around to see if the files can be found on any live hosts, but if anyone has the files to custom ROM any of these… they’re decent hardware and shouldn’t have to be tossed in the ground just because the manufacturers are too greedy to give new Android versions for them.

The D415 is already rooted; none of the others have had any mods done yet. I’m hoping to find potentially a decent build of maybe CyanogenMod, Lineage, Havoc, Pixel, or any of the other quality builds.

I already ran the Droid bootloader code check and Motorola’s site says this one is not eligible to be unlocked. Must have been the typical control-freak contract that Verizon usually does. I guess at that time they wanted to nickel and dime every bit they could with this model. Quite a few Verizon phones were able to be unlocked, though, so with that unit there still could be a possibility. I’m not expecting so, though.

I'm working with limited battery duration but Launchy would be immensely useful for my home screens. I don't want to use it, though, if it is heavy on the battery.

I want to scan specified range. I don't want something that just scans the default network. I'm trying to scan a subnet on a VPN I'm connected to. Would love something like Angry Scanner.

Hey all, Is it particularly unhealthy to snack on powdered drink mix? The kind that’s just garbage chemicals and artificial flavors. I drink TONS of water every day because I take a lot of medication so I have always drank a lot of water. I pee like 10x a day and it’s very clear so I know I’m getting plenty. That being divulged, we have this powdered drink mix and I like touching the pouch opening to my tongue and sucking on the powder a little bit at a time. It’s tasty and no calories to speak of. I know it’s junk but it keeps me from snacking on junk food. I just wonder if it’s particularly unhealthy to do.

The ones on XDA have dead links or have no workable instructions. Anyone have a complete repository with proper insructions? My T220 was very affordable but honestly, it's brutally slow. OneUI is too heavy for these resources. I don't want Lineage, since it does not allow moving apps to SD.

A solid generic Android with Root would be just ((((chef's kiss)))).

The device already has Developer options set to allow OEM unlocking and I have adb etc. on PC.

I hope someone has something good for me. Thanks.

Adding fonts to an OS is ancient, so it is baffling to me to have such trouble finding any resources on how to add my fonts to Android. How many fundamentals do they have to turn decades backward?
