The algorithms that manipulates your Facebook feed is Ai and yes that predated LLMs and chatgpt who turned this Ai craze into meaningless marketing term. When most people think of Ai they almost exclusively think of chatgpt, or grok. LLMs are not the only form of Ai, thats marketing hype and the same mechanisms that make us start refering to chatgpt or google as a verb. They don't own a term that describes a vast arrange of software and technologies.

Yes Facebook have been using ai and manipulating peoples feeds for the benefit of their advertisers. This system was used to do a regime change in Egypt and thanks to Cambridge analytica essentially got trump elected the first time. You can say they've done it the human way for a long time, but thats not true it was a short period of time before they started training face tagging algorithms, systematically collecting data on you even when you don't use a Facebook account, even something simple like changing from a organic feed to an algorithmic manipulation feed. Facebook has had Ai in it some from sort from the start, and all of it was and still is bad. I don't know how to explain anymore clearly that just because LLMs exist now that doesnt mean Ai didn't existed in the past. I can't explain to you how much of Facebook has always been just ai data scraping, illegal nonsense.

I think you guys are getting caught up in wording because we are talking about the same thing. The only thing I don't have a retort to is humans having to moderate content. I can tell you why we shouldnt use Ai but not a productive alternative.

Also I in no way want to let them off the hook, if anything I think their punishments should be worse or even excessive, for trying to pin their intentions on Ai and mysterious algorithms they pretend not to understand, yet they some how figured out how to abuse that algorithm for their ad partners. If I where to have it my way mark zuckerburg would be in prison already by a judge who insist on using maximum sentences for all possible crimes I can think of, and meta/Facebook would get a fine thats impossible to pay back similar to infowars.

I mean theres the save the kids act, the EU is fighting their chat control right now.

I guess I don't know what you want to define as being big enough to be considered "happening"

Also maybe we should consider nothing going on as a good thing. What if we did this everyday for a while.

Facebook is in a constant loop of firing employees and using the existing ones to train ai. Much of metas whole brand is algorithms (ai) and consuming your data while doing nothing about real systemic issues because they need your data to feed their ai and make ad revenu. I think its fair to say most of Facebook is just ai. They have LLMS, social manipulating algorithms for advertisers to exploit, facial detection, etc etc.

At the core its Ai just becoming a paper clip maximizer while willfully ignoring the obvious flaws, and instead choosing to double down. Now we have ai moderation in Facebook, and instead of banning porn ads, or direct scams they ban people for political speech with ai using basic keywords and image scanning tools which are wrong majority of the time. Thats another lawsuit Facebook is facing right now.

To me I don't see how you can't say ai is not a major contributor to this problem. Sure maybe if we hired back all the human employees nothing would change, but I don't think expanding the systematic tools that are used to abuse you while continually ignoring the glaring issues like sex trafficking, csam, scams, drugs etc is a good look. You can't tell me they have the ai tools now to ban tens to hundreds of thousands of people for a single word in a comment 5 years ago, but they can't stop when their advertisers post csam? They know what they are doing and they are using algorithms to boost their ad revenue. This company has been found guilty in court for essentially rigging the election. They have bragged about manipulating peoples feeds to force their emotions to change to see of they make more profits. I don't understand how you can't see the facts I posted and not see how Ai is exaggerating these problems to the point of it being criminal.

If you are trying to make some kind of distinction between LLMs that chatgpt use, and the different between algorithms on a Facebook feed, I am happy to make the distinction. But in general artificial intelligence is a broad term, and covers all those. To pre-argue the next point Facebook does have LLMS that do the average chat bot stuff too, and yes Facebook has gotten in trouble for having them sext teens.

After being banned from reddit I also kind of feel like this. I'm sure plenty is happening.

Also ive been on newpipe for a year now so my feed is literally only the things I subscribe to, and ive been blind to a lot more recently.

I made a seperate profile with news channels and stuff just so I can get some headlines going and know if I should be looking something up.

Other than that I have to go out of my way to see what's going on in the world. Which I now do when I poop instead of reddit.

Its weird it really fucks with your brain at first, the endless scroll was kind of this never ending game of there could be something better to watch or read. Even with lemme its kind of weird because I'll hit all the new content in 10 minutes so it feels empty. Thats pretty much dopamine withdrawal and feels normal when you get used to it.

Yeah no shit, maybe he should fire more workers and double down see how that goes for him.

Its insane when I was in Texas I heard ads for power companies saying you get "free power" between certain times.

I can 100% seeing people get ai driven pricing that monitors your usage and charges you the most when you are at home or the least when you are at work or asleep.

Its a insane idea to privatize and commodify a utility like electricity like that. LLMs are kind of of the same mechanism but over information on the internet. Pretty soon the internet won't be accessible unless you have some official google Facebook or whatever account tied to your ID. Every major website will just cease to function unless you sign in. Its pretty much already like that, I can't see reddit anymore sense I got banned and always am on a VPN. Newpipe forces me to change my IP every 3-4 hours because YouTube suspects I'm a bot. The only way to access any information will be through a LLM, and you will pay out the ass for it and its going to be full of dark patterns to try to keep you on as long as possible, and feed you as much advertisements. And thats if they even show you real information and not elon musk/Prager u's alternative history ai nonsense.

The internet is being dismantled as we speak, stolen, and then will repackaged to us in a form that is just a giant loot box. Like imagine having to constantly reroll your Claude code paying 10 bucks a spin so you can finish your gig work job done through some app. And you make 6 dollars after the LLM, and gig work app takes its fees. There where Israel gaming (gaming as in slot machines) companies that got kids addicted to video game gambling. They have numerous mobile slot machine apps for kids, and are apart of the gaming commission which heavily lobbied for gambling (lootboxes) in games. Then and the millennial adults addicted to kalshi, every one is programmed for this bullshit.

What's funny is they are constantly pushings ads right now that says the google playstore is the safest place and has no malware. Ironically some around 60-70% of malware comes from the google playstore directly.

Yet google is pushing so hard for third party apps to not be able to be installed on android what soever. Meaning you HAVE to go to the playstore filled with malware, and can't even use some FOSS github alternative.

Meta would let accounts reported for human trafficking purposefully remain active for 17 days or more if it helped with engagement.

So accounts where someone was potentially being trafficked and forced to prostitution where encouraged by meta to remain up for as long as possible.

Meta also is losing a lawsuit for being dangerous to teens. Yet every advertisement I get for them on YouTube, reddit etc claim they have saftey features for teens. Everything they say is the opposite.

Also this problem is mostly Ais fault.

Yeah well thats just like chinas opinion man.

Probably something that is so basic or integrated into the distros I use that I forget about it because every time I use it, it just works.

As someone who recently started hoarding old tools I wish that was true for all things.

We just recently got a singer 500a and its still impressive the engineering that went into that thing. The machine work is beautiful, and if you told me it was made in a CNC machine today I would of believed you.

Today modern and new, just means slave labor and plastic molded parts. Besides computers a lot of things haven't really changed. And often when they have changed it's for the worst. If I get a sewing machine today it would come with some app and internet connection for no reason, and would have plastic parts that struggle to get through 3 layers of cloth. While the singer 500a was meant to run 24/7 and is essentially the same exact thing.

For the most part the world has kind of been solved sense shortly after the industrial revolution. All the general commodities we interact with where mostly at their peak form back then. Dish washers, fridges, washing machines, driers. They're all almost exactly the same as they where when they where invented. There have been minor improvements that have been added over the years but for the most part things are in general just shittier.

You can blame so many things, you can say that mass production, trickle down economics, exporting labor etc all causes this. You can say that everyones access to mass produced garbage is an indicator of wealth and poverty dropping. What I don't think you can say anymore is that things "products" are better than they where in the old days.

I agree with your statement about cultural aspects though. Other than that when I hear some new innovative product the first thing that comes to my mind is its going to be another internet of things device that constantly bugs me and asks for more data, while providing 0 utility over the old version of the product, if anything its going to add more friction to my task, or attempt to insert a paywall into my life where one never existed before.

With games its harder to objectively say things where worse/better, but this infection of syphoning money out of every possible source infects games too. The only reason I can't say new modern games are bad is because indie games exist. Some of those indie games actually have brought me back to a childhood state where games where actually fun.

Thats not really fair. Morrowind was so buggy someone decided they needed to remake the entire game engine to play it. I wouldn't say most games where like that.
