I'm hoping that this project is just not generally representative of performance across the board with After Effects and that there's a lot of specifics making it so slow.

I started a project on my old hackintosh, which used an i7 6700 CPU, with 32GB of DDR3 ram and an NVIDIA GTX970. It was always going to be a big ask of the machine because I'm working with a PSD file that is 5472x3468 as the main material used an seen in my composition. The idea is to have this PSD image appear to be made out of glass, evidenced by cracks appearing in a very specific pattern defined by a separate illustrator 'cracks.ai' file, and then chunks of the image falling off based on the shapes made by those lines in the illustrator file. Though the source file is high resolution the composition is HD (pillarboxed to fit the image in correct aspect ratio).

The best I was able to come up with to do this was use the shatter effect with a custom shatter map based on a version of the crack lines illustrator file where the shapes created by those lines are each filled in with a solid colour based on the allowable custom shatter map colours used by the shatter effect. In order to precisely time the falling of each of the 12 shards of the image I made 12 precompositions themselves containing many precompositions which basically make a version of the source psd where only one individual shard at a time is visible and then a shatter effect is applied to each such precomposition using a duplicate of the cracks shatter map with only one individual shape visible at any one time to ensure that there is only one piece of glass in each precomp with a shatter effect. This means a lot of stacking of precomps each making use of a high resolution PSD imported as layers, not as footage. I'm guessing this adds to the strain. It was definitely taxing my old computer's modest specs. I also understand that the shatter effect is a very old effect and that it is 8bit.

Having switched the project over to my new 32GB ram, m2 max MBP I was really hoping for substantially faster render times even dreaming that perhaps it might even be real time. Not only wasn't it real time, but it seems to be no better than my old machine and possibly even worse. I can't really account for this, I'm not sure if this old 8bit effect works with GPU, but even if it doesn't, the CPU should be vastly more capable I would have thought. Based on what I've described, is this to be expected?

Just got a new mac and while I had disabled this on my old one, everything's moved around and I can't figure out how to get rid of this.

I don't use the multiple desktops thing and I like to use the Magnet app for window snapping. At the moment I can't drag the window to the top of the screen to make it occupy the full size of the screen using Magnet because instead it opens up the ribbon at the top for managing multiple desktops.

It's available on iPhone, iPad, and macOS - and one purchase unlocks it on all platforms. It receives regular updates, and has done for over the over 6 years it's been available

For the next 24 hours, the app is 50% off from it's normal price of $7.99 ($3.99)

If you do take advantage of the offer, a rating and review in the App Store would be hugely appreciated. It really does make a huge difference!

  1. Go to Settings ➜ Accessibility ➜ Siri
  2. Turn on "Type to Siri"
  3. Go to the Shortcuts app
  4. Create shortcuts that ask for input with short names (they're not case sensitive)
  5. Your iPhone now has a command palette

A screenshot of an iPhone with Siri being typed to and running a shortcut with the name "dg". The shortcut searches DuckDuckGo. The input is "Siri as a command palette".

Hello! I have made a macOS client for Lemmy - Leomard. It's an initial version of the app, and my first macOS app made for the public.

Features

  • Mac-native client
  • Fast, small and light (only 9.2 MB)
  • Open source (GPLv3)
  • Beautiful responsive interface

Of course, it's a very early version, some features are missing (ex. image uploading), and you may encounter a bug here and there.

Don't forget to follow Leomard's community: !leomard@lemm.ee

Or straight to the project’s Git: https://github.com/Athlon007/Leomard

If you have questions, feel free to ask :)

Hi everybody! This is the initial release of Leomard - a native macOS client app written in Swift using SwiftUI. It’s still in very early phase of development, features are missing, but it’s a start. Feedback is most welcome!

I have run Parallels for several years (mostly to do yearly business taxes), and I have resisted installing the Parallels Toolbox because I am wary of such things.

Nonetheless, I am curious about it and was wanting to know if anyone actually uses (and likes, or hates) it?

I've recently switched over to a MacBook Pro after using Windows or Linux laptops my entire life. I love that when I close the lid the laptop turns off and uses very little power. When I open it, everything is up and running again like nothing ever happend. Crazy concept I know, but coming from years of windows machines, this is a luxury.

What I can't figure out though is how do I keep the machine running when I lock it without closing the lid? I run various VPNs and have programs for work that are painfully slow to compile / start. I can't leave the thing unattended while signed in obviously in an office, but I'd love to be able to lock it while compiling and walk around / grab a drink without having to reconnect to the VPN and having to resume the compilation of programs.

At the same time, I really love that when I close the lid it goes to sleep so I'd like to keep that feature as well. Is this possible? My fellow Mac users in an office, what do you do?

I am looking for a good tutorial that explains how I can turn my older Mac mini into a NAS. I need something that’s easy to understand -ELI5 kind of style please. Long time Apple user but that seems daunting. Any ideas where to find some info?!

Does anyone know what this is? I was checking my Screen Time for today and scrolled all the way to the bottom just to bump into this.

This makes me curious

I had been using wefwef as an Apollo refugee, but it just wasn’t very consistent. Likely due to the webapp experience.

This morning I checked the AppStore for any Lemmy apps like I do every morning and to my delight I saw something. I have only spent an hour or so using it, but it feels very good for a new release.

It’s definitely not Apollo, but it also shouldn’t try to be.

Hi - Hoping someone's come across this before and can offer some suggestions.

I have a range of workshops I'm running next week for a customer. I'll be in the room with my Mac, projecting to a screen, showing various documents and websites.

I'm trying to find some software I can use that will:

  • Record my screen
  • Record the audio in the room
  • Transcribe the audio (cloud service is fine) and ideally recognise different voices that I can label later
  • Provide a synchronised means of searching the transcript and then playing back the audio and video at that time

On initial view there are many options however most of them want to integrate with zoom or teams or a video conference service... which I don't want to do.

The closest I've found is BackTrack - which seems ok however the transcription doesn't identify different speakers. I've tried Riverside.fm also however for the transcription to work each user has to be logged in and recording which isn't going to work in this instance.

So - i'm looking for suggestions on anything you might have used that does what I'm looking for.

At first glance, this looks incredibly similar to something like the desktop of the Apple Lisa or early Mac OS. It’s easy to see why people might think that Apple sort of stole the graphical user interface from it’s rich neighbor Xerox. It’s not true, though.
