Eyes Up's purpose is to "preserve evidence until it can be used in court." But it has been swept up in Apple's attack on ICE-spotting apps.

The fact that there is no fast way to split screen anymore and that slideOver is missing completely makes my iPad 11" nearly unusable for productivity tasks.

I waste so much time organising windows that then mostly have to be in split, because touch UI takes space..

It is infuriating and disappointing

Be sure that you really want this new mostly useless window system (on 11”) before updating!

It may be useful on the bog boy, who knows…

PSA: It is important to read all the software update buttons. Even if you ignore the first big Tahoe ad (same will apply to pads and phones), and just choose to "update", the upgrade to Tahoe is checked by default and the button will read "Upgrade".

This disingenuous practice which Apple has been practicing for years now, has resulted in many non-consentual OS upgrade.

The roll back process, especially without proper backup can be next to impossible, and the Liquid Glass UI roll out is just latest in failures of a company that false advertised AI, lies in court and dines with dictators and gifts them gold.

On a conspiratorial side note, this company is now fully Fourth Reich compliant, so careful installing anything new that might open up new backdoors.

I’m tired of the default keyboard. Swiftkey and Gboard do not work well for me. I was wondering if there was an open source keyboard (without jail breaking) that I could use.

Hello,

I am trying to help my girlfriend backup her iPhone and Macbook.

I am a bit unfamiliar with the Apple ecosystem, and she's still not very familiar with the technical aspects of it.

With my android and PC, it seems a bit more straightforward. Certain programs or services will backup everything, and I can restore it all exactly as it was at that time.

But the Apple webpage for iCloud Backup lists a bunch of things it backs up, meaning, it doesn't backup everything?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to make backups of her phone and laptop so she can restore them exactly as they were when each backup was made.

Do iPhones and Macs have this type of option? Backing up everything, like taking an image of them at that point, including all apps, all files, all settings, every little thing, and then using that to restore them at a later date if needed?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Any direction or guidance you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated.

I'll update with any solutions or options for your opinions if I'm able to find any.

Apple has made headlines in recent weeks for touting its commitment to privacy and human rights, rolling out tools to limit surveillance and spyware. But behind the corporate messaging lies a much darker reality.

The company has quietly brought in dozens of veterans from Unit 8200, Israel’s shadowy military intelligence unit known for blackmail, mass surveillance, and targeted killings.

Many of these hires took place as Israel escalated its war on Gaza, and as CEO Tim Cook publicly expressed support for Israel while disciplining employees for pro-Palestinian expressions. Apple’s deepening ties to Israel’s most controversial intelligence raise uncomfortable questions, not only about the company’s political loyalties, but also about how it handles vast troves of personal user data.

A MintPress News investigation has identified dozens of Unit 8200 operatives now working at Apple. The company’s hiring spree coincides with growing scrutiny of its ties to the Israeli government, including its policy of matching employee donations to groups such as Friends of the IDF and the Jewish National Fund, both of which play a role in the displacement of the Palestinian people. The intense pro-Israel bias at the corporation has led many former and current employees to speak out.

This investigation is part of a series examining the close collaboration between Unit 8200 and Western tech and media companies. Previous investigations examined the links between Unit 8200 and social media giants like TikTok, Facebook and Google, and how former Unit 8200 spies are now responsible for writing much of America’s news about Israel/Palestine, holding top jobs at outlets like CNN and Axios.

iPhone 17 (www.cultofmac.com)

I know it's CoM, who is basically Apple propaganda (forever living up to their name), but I've seen these iPhone 17 mock-ups before, and I really think they look like Pixels! Seriously, I have a Pixel 9 Pro that I use for work, and the design of the iPhone 17 is the definition of uninspired. Please, Tim, hire some good industrial designers. It's been a long boring stretch since Ive left.

Digging around in iOS settings under Apple Account, I encountered the Sign In with Apple page listing apps to which authentication is being provided via my Apple account . All app entries are familiar to me except for one with an Apple logo and "Sign In Group Production" as the app identifier.

I found a discussion on Apple's developer forum about Sign In With Apple and app grouping (https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/125087 ), but this isn't mentioned, and I don't use developer features or TestFlight on this device.

Does anyone else have this entry or know what it's used for?

The designer of the iPhone has promised his next artificial intelligence-enabled device will be driven by a sense that “humanity deserves better”, after admitting feeling “responsibility” for some of the negative consequences of modern technology.

Sir Jony Ive said his new partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, would renew his optimism about technology, amid widespread concerns about the impact of smartphones and social media.

In an interview with the Financial Times, London-born Ive declined to give details about the device he is developing with OpenAI, but indicated unease about people’s relationship with some tech products.

iPad Air 5th gen with maxed out everything, cost me over 1000€ bc I needed it for school and plan to use it as work tablet.

Now it started when I installed iOS 16 a few years ago, the animation from swpining up the lock screen when the iPad was still locked was gone.

Then in 17 or 18 when the Control panel rework came, it sometimes froze up when switching the control panels. Now, some time later the whole thing started to crash when I just pulled it down and started bootlooping a few times. After that stopped after 10 Minutes its back to standard freezing for 10-20 secs

Now I would love to include logs, but Apple is allergic to them, so thats all I have to work with

The app was already in the EU AppStore but recently it was approved for the global AppStore too! This app allows you to run JIT for supported side loaded apps without the need of jailbreaking or using another device (you do need a PC to set it up though). With this you can emulate Wii, Nintendo Switch (YES THE NINTENDO SWITCH) and 3Ds with more apps to come because they have yet to add support for this method.

Apple did say that they plan on patching this method, making it obsolete in the future. It is generally expected to be patched in iOS19.

Epic Games v. Apple judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers just ruled that, effective immediately, Apple is no longer allowed to collect fees on purchases made outside apps and blocks the company from restricting how developers can point users to where they can make purchases outside of apps. Apple says it will appeal the order.

The ruling was issued as part of Epic Games’ ongoing legal dispute against Apple, and it’s a major victory for Epic’s arguments. Gonzalez Rogers also says that Apple “willfully” chose not to comply with her previous injunction from her original 2021 ruling. “That [Apple] thought this Court would tolerate such insubordination was a gross miscalculation,” Gonzalez Rogers says.

The judge also referred the case to the US attorney to review it for possible criminal contempt proceedings.

As part of the ruling, the judge says that Apple cannot:

  • Impose “any commission or any fee on purchases that consumers make outside an app”
  • Restrict developers’ style, formatting, or placement of links for purchases outside of an app
  • Block or limit the “use of buttons or other calls to action”
  • Interfere with consumers’ choice to leave an app with anything beyond “a neutral message apprising users that they are going to a third-party site”

Apple’s senior director of corporate communications, Olivia Dalton, sent a statement to The Verge that reads, “We strongly disagree with the decision. We will comply with the court’s order and we will appeal.”

As a Lifelong user of FOSS software, I thought you could just install any .ipa now like on android, and I was shocked to discover that just being able to install from Safari now changes nothing about how you install Apps. You still need to sign all packages with an Apple authorized Key to even be able to look at the App, and theres no way of Trusting other sources for Keys, like in SSL, Ssh, and general cryptography. This way, if I want to install anything for more than 7 days, I need a 99€/year Apple Subscription, together with my Full Name and Address.

So why the fuck did the EU just call it a day with this, since you still need a Apples consent to sign your App? If Apple dosent want your App on their Ecosystem, now instead of just removing it from the store they can just ban your Signature alltogether. Literally nothing has changed, apple still has as much control over your Devices as before, but now theres just this Sticker that says „now 30% more consumer friendly“ on the box.

And also, there is still no Official tutorial of how to install apps, and even in the Forum every single Thread about this gets closed with a generic „If you need Locally signed Apps for your Device, please buy this enterprise grade Management software for a billion bucks a month“. Nothing about installing ipas through Apple devices, nothing about signing an app, just the same bullshit.

so did it change anything at all, or is the Ecosystem still as locked down as before?

I received a text notification from an unknown number earlier today. I'm usually suspicious of such things, but clicked the notification. The messages app loaded, but displayed a blank white screen until I closed the app. After doing so, there was no evidence of the message notification or the message itself, in any of the message categories (known, unknown, all, deleted messages, etc).

This is on an iPhone 14 Pro Max using a fully up to date device running iOS 18.3.1 .

Has anyone else experienced this? I am hoping that the group might be able to offer insight into whether this is a bug worth reporting to Apple, or an attack of some sort? I am aware that at least one zero-click messaging bug was recently patched in iOS. I rebooted my device, and I'm waiting for the security delay to expire so I can reset my iCloud password. I have 2FA and stolen device protection switched on.

(please disregard link to example.com ; my Lemmy client wouldn't allow a text-only post without an image or a link).

Got the 621 and it kind of sucks. Constantly disconnects and slow charging. Wonder if this is just the product

I’m usually an Android/Linux user, but also use an iPad. In both Android and Linux I manage to have a mostly ad free experience, with Piped, for example, or with a plugin combo in Firefox. Is there a way to have this on the iPad? The whole no plugin thing in iPad Firefox is quite maddening.

I've installed NTFS-3g but as far as I can tell it only allows me to mount and write to NTFS partitions, I need to actually create one. Free as in beer.

So as you may know, iOS 18.1 and watchOS 18.1 is out. And i decided to updste both my phone and watch simultaneously. (They were both plugged in) The phone finished first, but when the apple watch finished, it stopped charging, and instead discharging. (it was plugged in). Well after i clicked on the battery percentage on the watch face, it odly says that its at 100%, while the watchface says 98%. Anyone encountered this bug?
