Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I'm writing a story about a biracial superhero. He's in his 20s, and his dad is a Black billionaire. His mom is Japanese, and she comes from a wealthy family. I don't want to give too much away, but there is something about his family's history that resurfaces, and it connects to his powers. He is basically trying to find out what it is. My friend says the story is stupid and no one would want to read it.

I’ve tried using multiple apps, and about to try via web. It always throws an error and says I can’t block them.

Is there some reason why it couldn’t be done? It works for literally every other instance.

Edit: looks like my instance already blocks it. So maybe this was a stupid question.

So the US has dumped billions in helping Ukraine fight the Russians but now we’ve lifted oil sanctions against Russia which will give them billions of dollars so we can fiend on crude while admin kicks EV’s and renewables in the balls.

If I ask “is admin this stupid?” I’ll get all the “duh”(s) I could ever want. I’m not the smartest guy in the room so please help me understand where my taxes go (without representation) and why so many in leadership let them get away with it. It is the most transparent admin in history, and we get to see all the corruption and law breaking and we just watch.

I listen to the Last Podcast on the Left and I'm learning now about the DuPonts. I'm astounded how it may seem like so little people know of them aside from the listeners. These are actual demons in living people to do the things they do. For example, they're responsible for Teflon which is produced using C8 chemical. This is a forever chemical.

To give you an idea as to how royally fucked the world has been, Teflon is in numerous things that we use everyday. It is in the non-stick cookware we use. It's in waterproof fabrics. Food packaging. Just a lot of shit. And we use these things - every. day. This chemical, once it is in you, it's in you until even through death hence it being a forever chemical and there's no way you can be rid of it. It can spawn cancerous cells in your body.

And I'm just listening to all of this thinking "Forget half of the shit we're gearing our anger towards, it's THESE people we need to draw and quarter!" because of the insurmountable damage and influence they've been in so many things that has everyone's lives in a stranglehold.

Even Dhar Mann has better sets, writing and even to some extent actors. If Tyler Perry is this wealthy he has no excuse to make low quality films.

I really liked LM Studio and then I realized it's closed source.

When LM Studio contacts external servers, is what sent clear or encrypted? Is there any proof there is not really telemetry forced by the government providing information on what I type?

One of the reasons I fear closed source software is because of backdoors. Another reason is that the US government can require backdoors using court orders and force corporations to lie about backdoors existing or telemetry when it's closed source code and can't be reviewed.

In other words, if they were sending my discussion with an AI femboy "CyberPunk Gemi" to a server, which could flag me as Trans or LGBT friendly "threat" under a Christian Nationalist government at the rate the US country is going, could I see that in the packets being transmitted by the program via wireshark or would I just not know because anything going to their server has encrypted packets from https?

Does this present any sort of real risk with LM Studio?

Would it be possible for the government to order LM Studio to upload data only when certain keywords are used (like "Cyberpunk Femboy" or "Leftist on Lemmy")?

LM Studio is based out of New York so backdoors could already forced and I would never know.

It's been a stereotype for at least the last 50 years. Why has this never changed? Why has organized labor not had a substantial effect for such an essential part of the workforce?

No shaving off leading zeroes, no assuming I want a formula unless I explicitly prepend the cell with an = (or whatever the syntax is). If I want a string that starts with a hyphen, it's just a string that starts with a hyphen. If I open a CSV or TSV file and save a copy without doing anything to it, it should be identical to the original down to hashing the same.

But I'd also like the nice auto-filtering capabilities that excel has, where there's a dropdown on each column for sorting and searching.

Does such a program exist?

I'm writing a revenge story. This guy or girl comes from a rich family. Their dad is a doctor and their mom is a lawyer. The kid is in their 20s and is a drug addict. Their family cut them off because of it.

The dealer kills them because they couldn't pay the money they owed. Then a loved one goes after the dealer for revenge.

Is this good? I didn’t want to overcomplicate it by giving it a huge conspiracy, but at the same time, realistically, couldn’t they have gotten the money some other way?

I feel like every time I try to give a rough description of some idea or concept to a search engine, the results are seldom anything more than useless/misleading. But then, when I find out there's a technical or standard term for whatever concept I'm trying to convey, using that term drastically improves the search results (even if in the end I don't get the answer I need). Since this is a struggle that I face pretty often, I will many times just give up on raw searching and end up describing the exact thing to some LLM, even the AI assist of whatever search engine I am using.

On the other hand, I think it's fair to say that search engines have just gotten worse over time as the internet gets flooded with useless/AI-generated/low effort algorithm-bait websites, so most successful searches I do usually end up with the "reddit" suffix, or maybe a look through wikipedia, or maybe some other forum.

But back to the core issue, how do I go from something like "tracking bounding box followed by the camera computer graphics" to "camera deadzone"?, or "orelse-like operator in typescript" to "nullish coalescing operator"? and plenty of examples like these. I know the usual is to rephrase the search, look for synonyms, make the search more targeted, etc. But is there any website/search engine that makes it easier to find standard terms from descriptions? I feel like a full-blown LLM is just overkill for this purpose.

I bought a sticker pack online and one of them was a red Arch Linux logo I've never seen before, and strangely enough the pack did not include the blue version. What does this red version mean, is it an old logo or what? Is it some sort of testing/developer branch?

Since Diaper Donnie is soon going to be rubbing his hands in glee to send Americans now into his meat grinder over wars he starts, how do you plan to avoid the draft?

I'm too old to join, thank god. Too old and too out of shape for them to bother caring. Plus a lot of psychological issues that will make me more likely shoot my superior that's telling me I need to kill innocents to help king pedo succeed in his bullshit missions.

I'm not asking about the ethics of lying, or whether lawyers may be justified in lying. That is beside the point. I am just asking: hypothetically, would it be possible for a lawyer to have a successful career while never uttering so much as a white lie?

Like, let's say the lawyer had some sort of spell cast on them, so they could never lie. If someone were to ask them a question, they'd either need to find a way to avoid answering or answer honestly. Would it be possible for a lawyer in such circumstances to still go on and have a successful career?

Am I the only one that thinks it’s strange that the US hasn’t attacked Mojtaba Khamenei? I thought that they were threatening to remove any leader previously associated with the regime.

Am I missing something?

Surely it's a misunderstanding and it has nothing to do with his politics? He's MAGA in case anyone was wondering, a huge Trump defender. Anyway, whenever I tell Grandpa (who I live with) that I want to see the world or go to Germany or Norway on a school trip, or see Norway when I get older with my dad perhaps, he says "Why can't you just stay here?" or "Why can't you visit this country first?"

Then he goes on about how people speak English in America and in Germany and Norway, they speak other languages when I want to learn another language. I want to be fluent in my second and heritage language Norwegian and in German, which I will hopefully become a polyglot in English, Spanish, German, Norwegian and Toki Pona by 2029.

Also, I've told him that I know several monolingual English speakers who went to other non-English speaking countries like Mexico, but he still won't listen and help me save up. (I don't have a job yet and I'm only 15).

Not only this, as much as I love him due to him being family, I don't love his views. He doesn't really like immigrants due to his thinking they all can't speak English. If they speak accented English, he still tells them to "speak English". Maybe he doesn't want to "BECOME the immigrant" (in quotes, because well... we're not Native). Also, I will forever not understand people's hatred towards immigrants and their desire to embrace their home culture in a better country.

I've made accounts on servers running these different software and the user experience feels similar between them. They're all FOSS Reddits. I can log into servers running all of em via the same Interstellar app on Android and see the same communities

Are there more notable differences for folks running the server or the mods running the individual communities/subredits?

Or am i misunderstanding them?
