I know people out there who have invested a lot in gold under the belief that in the event of like complete societal collapse or hyperinflation, they could use it for purchasing.

I have the hunch it's a scam, but I haven't learned enough monetary theory, business, or economics to understand why.

Is it bad takes, controversial posts, or something else?

5

Is it number of times the community page is requested? The number of users that post, comment, or vote? Or something else?

It would be nice to get separate posts per day and comments per day etc. to see in what ways a community is active.

several months ago I wrote about leaving floor nursing for moving patients in beds. I also posted it would mean a 20% financial hit.

Turns out the financial hit is 2%. I took the job.

Several of my former colleagues, after seeing me now that I switched jobs cannot hide their disbelief and shock. Some of the things I've heard: "what a waste, you can do more." "You are a RN and you choose to move beds?", "Haven't you worked with us?", "Oh no, don't tell me you're moving beds now." and more.

I've always been very individualistic and never cared much about what others think about me. This new job means less stress and I can sleep better.

But it's not only other RNs who tell me this: doctors as well, very knowledgeable ones.

Am I doing something wrong, when so many people, some of them much smarter than me tell me what I'm doing is stupid?

Going back to my old job doesn't mean going back to my old department, just back to floor nursing.

My feed has been filled with rpg geeks shitting on him. I do not know why. I assume he said something nasty, or did something worse than his usual disgusting foot fetish.

Why do I see Tarantino drama constantly? What triggered it?

Are all dinosaur fossils 'replicas'? (www.indianadinosaurmuseum.org)
submitted 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) by DemBoSain@midwest.social to c/nostupidquestions@lemmy.world

I went to a small 'dinosaur museum' last summer in South Bend Indiana. I wasn't expecting much, but found myself disappointed that all the large displays (except one) were 'replicas'. I'm not sure why I felt this way, since all fossils are 'copies'. But 'replica' makes it seem fake.

edit: I think this is being misinterpreted. In my mind, all fossils are 'copies' of the original. The bone is gone, replaced by stone. But for some reason, calling something a replica doesn't carry the same...majesty as the original copy. Maybe it's just the thought that it could have been tampered with when making it out of plastic or fiberglass.

Hello,

I'm into microcontrollers and programming and would love to send my own small cube satellite into space (one day).

But there are a few things I have zero experience with, and these are:

  • When the satellite is in space, it needs to correct its position to always point the camera on earth
  • During launch of the rocket my cube sat needs to be as robust as possible
  • I can not manufacture the case myself
  • Power supply + battery
  • Providing in-orbit (OTA) updates - This needs to be bullet-proof working
  • Space RF communication protocols and best-use technologies - I need to read about it more
  • Software security best practices in orbit
  • Suitable ground station hardware
  • Which deployment orbit
  • Deployment mechanism
  • Radiation-hardened MCUs and SBCs - Which models? I just know consumer models like ESP32, STM, Raspberry Pico, Arduino, etc.

Can you recommend a good read on that? A book or pdf? Is there anyone with experience?

(This project is btw on my bucket list before I die, it's not urgent though)

Best,
q1p_

Do we really need West and South when we can use negative North and negative East?

cross-posted from: https://linux.community/post/3985690

it's footage made by the Americans to be shown to the court and possibly to the German public to advance denazification. It begins with a map of occupied Europe and the names and locations of the main concentration camps.

I've seen some excerpts of that documentary on several history documentaries, but never the whole film.

In the film shown to the court we see some prisoners praying, thanking their saviors, emaciated dead prisoners, excavators burying decaying bodies by the hundreds, former prisoners describing Nazi torture techniques, a crematorium is shown...

Do you know the name of the footage and where to find it?

I regularly sneeze five times, as does my mom, brother, uncle and one of two aunts (both on mom's side, RIP), and my son.

I wasn't able to join the military because of it. I tried calling up my local PD and asking the source itself. Not only did they not know the answer (I'm shocked too trust me), they said I had to pass a medical test AFTER I go through all the prerequisites. So I'm asking here before I dedicate myself.

I am looking to replace my phones text message client with something better. I am trying to make my phone clean, minimalist and less addicting (degoogling too). I even installed Niagara launcher, to give an idea of the kind of aesthetic I am looking for. Is there anything out there folks reccomend? Bonus points if its ethical and pro-privacy.

I've seen two posts today of ICE agents arresting and terrorising 'alleged' US citizens. Where are the bearers of arms who bear arms in case of government tyranny? Is now the time to rise up and force back this disgraceful bullshit we're seeing in the US?

note: I am not advocating for the partition of the US, it's just fun to think about new countries! Also, I'm not American and have never been there so I have no clue about the different cultures in the different states.

If the US broke up into multiple pieces in some way or another, what new countries would you want to appear? (with and without considering for the feasibility of such new countries) What would their relations be like with each other and with other countries?

Personally, I would think New York (the city) becoming an independent microstate would be kind of cool, like the Vatican City of the stock market. The idea of "Cascadia" (which, to my knowledge, includes California, Oregon, and one other I forgot the name of. I think a bit of Canada too. The west coast, right?) could be realised, and with California, they would have a very beefy economy, as well as Silicon Valley. An independent Alaskan state could also be interesting, especially since they have a cool flag. Same goes for Texas.

He's elderly (84 or 85). My house is joined with his. There's a third house that is partially joined to his and they recently had a new kitchen fitted, so there was a lot of drilling in the morning. Since then, he's been blasting the radio on what sounds like a subwoofer aimed against the wall every morning at 7 AM. I live with my brother and my mum, and it wakes us all up. It's a very deep bassy noise so it's hard to block out or drown out. It goes on until 1 PM.

He is doing this on purpose. He did the same thing in 2023 and I went over to his house assuming he didn't know he was being loud and politely told him to turn his TV down in the morning because it's waking us up. Then he told me he's doing it to wake my brother up because "every night at 1:30 AM he wakes me up making wolf noises in the garden so I'll wake him up too since he's obviously not sleeping during the night since he's making noises all night" (foxes frequently visit our garden at night). He's also accused my brother of "cloning my phone", "stealing my water", "stealing my food deliveries", and other crackpot things.

All Summer this year he was blasting one of those 120 dB sirens at 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 AM each night. He'd then scream at the wall for a minute or two after sounding the siren, seemingly to do with my brother. Sometimes he'd then wake up at 7 AM and immediately go and blast the radio all day. He would also come outside into his garden with a frying pan calling my brother's name. The sirens stopped in July.

The kitchen work on the third house is done and was completed on the 24th of November, but they've left a fridge next to my neighbour's drive. A few days ago he came outside and my mum heard him yell "move your fridge, [brother's name]!".

In August and September and much of October he was quiet but now he's blasting the radio multiple days in a row for weeks on end. I have health problems and don't need this. I have other things going on in my life and recently this was the straw that broke the camel's back and I had a mental breakdown on the 1st of December which caused me to knock stuff off a shelf which caused a very old and very sentimental item of mine to break (I did not mean to break it, just to knock stuff off the shelf). I feel on edge because I can't really sleep early because he also blasts his TV until 12 PM. It's not just the loud noise, it's also the reason he's doing it.

We have complained numerous times to the council (environmental health), as well as the police. They have sent him letters but he has ignored all of them and continues the harassment. He is obviously refusing to take his medication.

He has also called the police on us and we had two police officers arrive at our door because of his slander. All 3 of us are not well, we don't make any noise, and need our sleep. I don't want to move as this was my grandparent's house that was given to us by them after they died.

We are at wit's end here. We just want the harassment to stop. Is there a way we could get him sectioned under the mental health act?

edit: For non UK readers, being "sectioned" means being involuntarily hospitalised and forced to take medication
