A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

every so often we experience some chemical reactions inside of us that make us wish for contact with other beings of our same nature to get in the same act that serves as a way to preserve our species, and our personalities suffer subtle changes that favour that to happen

after that we return to our usual (and sometimes shyer) self until time pases and the cycle repeats

This would stop the currently exponential pace of growth from outpacing what society, and regulation, can adapt to. Thus avoiding the inevitable crash that will happen when we lose control of the exponentially accelerating train of technology, and it flies off the rails.

The stardust is a given. As for sunlight, all the energy including somewhat arguably geothermal (using the suns gravity to help form the earth and I guess radioactive material being formed by other stars) comes from the sun and gets converted into chemical energy you eat so you're stardust animated by sunlight (mainly).

So you know how some mushrooms can control brains of ants they attach to?

What if you found out your pet cat or birb was being controlled by one since one week before you adopted them?

Would you go get it removed or is it like the fungal hivemind is your pet now?

Beach parties and orgies are the obvious exceptions

Plus, I doubt the person making the threat would wait for any actual preparations such as canceling various subscriptions. And I don't think they'd allow for the necessary witnesses required while I'm writing my will.

Just a matter of time.

Assume everything else, like the quality of the content, would stay the same as now

This would tell us if social media content behaves like & should be treated as a commodity (just like magazines & DVDs), or something completely different like waste or like a public good

you know matrix chat? it's supposed to be end-to-end encrypted. the same goes for whatsapp and other chat applications.

(technical note: if alice wants to send a message to bob with end-to-end encryption, then alice signs the message with her private key and bob's public key. then bob can read the message with alice's public key and his private key. so bob knows that the message actually comes from alice, and nobody can read it but bob.)

here's the problem: the public keys are all stored on someone else's (3rd party) server. for whatsapp, they're stored on whatsapp's server. so if bob gets a message from alice, he has to read that message with alice's public key, but he gets the key from whatsapp's server. so whatsapp can do a man-in-the-middle attack quite easily by giving out a fake alice's public key.

actual effective end-to-end communication is only possible if alice and bob exchange public keys in real life. this circumvents a 3rd party server. and this is what needs to be implemented in chat applications such as matrix chat. (you can pass the public key with a QR code or sth like that)

Licensed or not the only good use case came and go and nobody though of it showing how dumb these grifters are. You buy a pack for 1 or 2 USD, get 5 random player cards, trade them for 10-20 cents, the owner of the project gets 10% on every trade. Complete album holders can participate on a weekly lottery once. A very easy and profitable business model. BUT involves been serious and not scamming the user so no incentive to make it.

My playlists are a mess since I make different playlists for different vibes or tasks. It's getting to the point where I don't remember which playlists I've already made.

If I could assign tags to the songs instead, then it would be easy to filter the songs with a combination of tags such as no-lyrics + energetic

Like, we're destroying the one place we know is a sure bet on where we can prosper if we keep it healthy, but instead the world's richest man is trying to expand to other planets while this one's ability to sustain life is in jeopardy. IMO that makes us potentially a very stupid species compared to a species that doesn't really care about meeting other aliens because they value the life on their own planet far more than we do.
