There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I know that Euro is the second most traded currency but it doesn't have the #1 spot because of the US Dollar (which is printed on top of piling debt by the way) since oil is priced in USD per barrel instead of quoting it in EUR per barrel (since the US has monopoly on oil).

Money printers for the USD are running constantly, going "BRRR" and have a high national debt. They're putting themselves further into that hole whilst printing more cash. What about the Euro? Is it even printed that often 24/7 or controlled to print a capped amount?

The only way to really Euro become superior is to incentivize it on a international scale (more than the US Dollar) on getting countries to accept & trust it more (but USD accounts for 60% of global commerce) so the Euro has A LOT of catching up to do on that.

Does the EU really have power or control over OPEC (Oil)? If they can grasp monopoly over the Gulf states by convincing them to price every barrel in Euros: would that strengthen the currency? The British Pound is the former global reserve currency before the US Dollar.

If European travelers stopped converting EUR to USD, only using EUR for international travel towards currency exchanges: would that increase the demand for it since US Dollar is literally the default for A LOT of countries (even "third world" ones) in terms of payment.

Arbitrary numbers regarding forex aren't an indicator: so what if 1€ is worth more than $1? It's more on PPP and trust, so with a stronger Euro traveling abroad (including the Americas): does that make it cheap for you to visit as you're able to buy more than they can?

I try to work out in the afternoon, but I just can't—my body fights me the whole time. But when I work out in the morning, I feel tired for the rest of the day. What is this curse?!

I'm guessing I should just work out in the morning until I build enough stamina so I don't feel drained afterward. In the morning, I'm full of energy at the start, but then I feel completely beaten after the workout. Does anybody else go through this?

AI can't be all that bad. The problem I'm always seeing with AI is a double-edged sword. You have corporations shoving AI in just about everything, treating it like its a cure for cancer and that really rubs people the wrong way. Then, on a more of a society level, you've got people who use AI for an assortment of things like making art with AI and still accredit themselves as an artist to people who treat AI like a therapist when it is not advised to.

However, I've found some benefits with AI. For example, I'm chatting with ChatGPT on credit cards, because it is something I may lean towards getting into. It's helping me better understand than most people have tried explaining to me. Simply because it is giving me a more stream-lined response than people just beating the bush.

America

  • Good pay
  • Bigger Houses
  • Free internet
  • Not an ethnostate
  • Nice/open people
  • Nice Nature
  • Public Respect (somewhat)
  • While the chances are low, shootings and police/ICE violence is not 0%
  • Universities, really good if not best (as an academic)

China

  • Clean, Major cities are clean but more polluted and trashed than other two
  • Ethnostate, forever an outsider
  • Increasingly difficult internet.
  • Nice/open people
  • Safe Society
  • Universities, pretty mid to bad at best unless its top

Japan

  • Cleanest
  • Ethnostate, forever an outsider, but not being stared at or random photos like in China
  • Free internet
  • Nice Nature
  • Public Trust
  • Public Respect
  • Safe Society
  • Universities, pretty mid to bad at best unless its top three

I feel forever trapped between these three countries with family, languages, culture, and religion. Very lost on which to pursue for my career. A recent trip to China has made me very much feel not China. I cannot stand the staring, photo taking making me feel like I'm a zoo animal, even more so for my child. But it is nice and pay can be decent. I also really like Chinese people and culture.

America has a lot of good, but I'm so sick of having to be stressed about its politics and the culture of violence. I do love the nature, individual freedom, and academic (tho the recent not being able to comment on Israel has been insane).

Japan is great on the surface but subtle racism, bad pay, and trump-copy cat prime minister is concerning. Committing to China or especially Japan over the US is fucking my family financially if we want to visit family in the other two countries.

Side note, I love being fluid between three cultures but not having a stable home in one place is somewhat exhausting.

Another random thought is America is actually so comfortable compared to China or Japan when it comes to being yourself.

Edit: why is everyone being pedantic or getting upset over one word rather than just answer lmao

I worked bedside nursing. Where i worked we always had extra food trays patients didn't want, meaning I could get up to 2 meals a shift for free.

On paper prohibited but where I worked at this was very extended, convenient and fast.

Changed workplaces and I cannot get any free food anymore. I simply don't know what to bring to the workplace.

If its of any help I like cooking stews, but it's gonna be a hassle to bring that to the workplace. And to bring a sandwich or buy one at the cafeteria? I'll pass.

I mean, atrocities during war or crimes against humanity have been documented for ages but the issue is victims affected wanting to achieve justice: especially those committing them are NOT parties of the ICC nor signatories of the Rome Statute hence why those nations feel entitled "getting away with murder" even though eyewitnesses saw them (boots on the ground) killing innocent people framed on mainstream media as "the enemy".

The problem is that those types of countries have monopoly over the ICC or equivalent bodies, as in "don't you dare mess with us and we'll place sanctions or invade your homeland" type blackmail explaining why they often get pushed under the rug despite countless testimonies from witnesses and recorded recounts from those who saw it. A normal criminal lawyer can't fight against this type of murder case in court since it's the government.

The only "solution" for victims to really sue (via a UN like body) is to have their leader (president?) be their attorney condemning the invading nation as "your troops murdered my countrymen / women!" but issues from that exist too: those nations are permanent members of the security council meaning they have veto power rescinding any claims or "potential charges" & "accusations of wrongdoing" meaning they got away with murder.

Normal authorities can't really touch those types of perpetrators (bureaucrats & politicians) but the "closest" thing to achieving justice is arresting the individuals (soldiers?) on the ground who partook in it via court martial. However even getting to that level is hard as hell for a civilian who's victimized or lost their loved ones due to them being murdered by these people. However, if it's a PMC who's responsible: don't get your hopes up.

Mercenaries by definition are hired to kill on behalf of a private firm for profit while soldiers are affiliated with an armed service on behalf of a nation who comply with orders, so there's a difference between the two which influences the criteria the rules of war apply to (since they were written specifically for a standing army but excludes PMC's) hence why often or not it's mercenaries murdering people rather than those in uniform.

The dangerous part is getting eyewitnesses to speak up: since they can be assassinated for "snitching" as that does happen or eyewitnesses face threats from the perpetrators of either being imprisoned for treason or espionage hence why they scared on calling out their wrongdoings since the government is the perpetrator / murderer / abettor. But, is conducting a raid to commit atrocities (genocide?) the same as intentional murder?

The only "way" in a form or another to achieve a small sense of justice or awareness of these crimes on a societal level is to campaign against said conflict initiated by the government (i.e. partaking in anti war demonstrations) and there are historical examples of it: Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Even though word of mouth alone carries barely any effect, you need collab with those who fought in it (veterans) to share the true horrors.

In most cases, like with anything political: there's propaganda used to sell a controlled narrative or to influence people's perception of what the government is doing by making an excuse (i.e. the invasion of Iraq was sold under "Hussein has WMD's" but no proof was found, since the truth is that Bush wants to defend his own interests: OIL). So, you will need counter-media to de-brainwash people into believing the lies being told to them.

I know for example: there was a guy who got bitten by a tick in Australia and yet doctors still think "nothing is wrong" just because Australia doesn't recognize Lyme Disease since their argument is "no scientific proof that ticks in our country transmit the bacteria" which sounds stupid when there are cases of people having Lyme Disease there.

And he's not the only one: as a woman shared the symptoms he had, but Australia FOR SOME reason is still in denial as their counterargument sticks on "NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT OUR TICKS HAVE IT" so she spent money on getting the results in another country where Lyme Disease is officially recognized paid from her own pocket.

In comparison:

  • is Lyme Disease recognized in the United States?
  • If so, how common is it amongst the population?

I don't care about my job anymore: my boss bores me and constantly tries manipulating me so I work more for the same money, half of my coworkers are morons (the other half are fine), clients are demanding and entitled asses. All I think of is excuses not to work, but I don't have enough stamina to quit and find something else. It's like I'm the main character in office space.

Sometimes I think I should be fired because that would force me to snap out of it and find something I might enjoy, but every job is going to be sh*t like the one I have now. I'm following the path of least resistance.

I work because I need money but I've decided I'm gonna half ass it as much as I can and call in sick as much as I can because what's the effing point? I'm gonna get paid anyways and nothing ever changes: my boss is not going to get rid of his gang of favorites, is always going to believe them over those who want to keep the distance, they're going to get away working less because the boss likes them and I'm the asshole working more for the same money.

Another question: If your work includes dealing with the public, have you noticed how they're increasingly demanding? I don't know if I'm the only one feeling like this. It's like spring brings out the stupid side of people.

OBS has the option to use vp9_qsv in Custom Output (FFmpeg) and it works great.

Since vp9_qsv is already available and functional via FFmpeg custom output, why isn't it exposed as a first-class encoder option in the Simple/Advanced output modes?

(I'm just trying to learn. No hidden mockery in this and this is no gotcha bs aimed at t women. I'm NOT transphobic. Just saw this in a debate and wanted to know other people's thoughts)

I just want to know:

  1. Is this factually correct?
  2. If it is, does it matter? Why or why not?
  3. How would you logically respond to this?
  4. How does this statement not contradict with Trans Women are Women

I know that in certain countries like Japan or South Korea: it's normal to leave the front door unlocked since the probaility of someone breaking in is low since their crime rate isn't high. I knew a friend of mine who resides in Korea where they even left the car unlocked with the keys inside, can you do either of those things in America?

Yesterday, a Declaration of the trafficking of enslaved Africans and Racialized Chattel Enslavement of Africans as the Gravest Crime against Humanity was voted at UNO. As usual, Israel and the USA voted against. How did your country vote? Any thoughts about it?

Doesn’t That level of power automatically makes someone:

Publicly known (at least in business, government, media circles) Documented online, in filings, press, contracts, etc. Recognizable to anyone

Especially if the CEO is a person of color who came from a middle class background

Wouldn’t they be automatically famous?

a job offer offers exactly that, mo to fr, and I'm not very convinced. My soon to be former job includes weekends and several shifts, starting at 06:30, 07:00, 08:00, 09:00 and 13:00.

I prefer working weekends because if my free days happen on Wednesday or Thursday, supermarkets are mostly empty, there is also less traffic and going to the doctor is also easier, whereas if I work mo to fr I'm another regular chump, having a weekend like everyone else, parks are mostly crowded and I enjoy solitude.

Starting work at 13:00 was also good, as I could have a pleasant morning at home.

I'm going to miss working weekends and having free Wednesdays and Thursdays. I don't know how to adapt.

This happens in Germany, but I’m curious to know what the situation is like in other countries.

My current contract with a division of a state-owned company expires at the end of May—in two months. My current division won’t be renewing it. I say “division” because I wasn’t fired; it’s more like I’ve been transferred to a different position, though I wouldn’t call it a demotion.

I didn't ask why, because supervisors have lied to me in the past, and if a supervisor doesn't want me, what good would it do to insist on knowing the reason? He made his mind up.

This came as a complete surprise to me. I found this job easy and enjoyable, and that’s all I could ask for in a job.

I’ve already received an offer from a former supervisor who somehow found out that I’m being “let go.” I don’t particularly like this person, but some of the colleagues there are really nice. That seems to be the easiest option right now.

I really don’t feel like working, and I don’t want to apply for jobs either. It’s so terribly exhausting.

Before you write that I should make an effort to show my company how good and motivated I am… nobody here cares about that. There are coworkers who call in sick several days a week in situations like this and still haven’t been fired. Why shouldn’t I be one of them?

I really don't want to work.
