  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (e.g. politics or societal debates).
  4. Stay calm: Don’t post angry or to vent or complain. We are a place where everyone can forget about their everyday or not so everyday worries for a moment. Venting, complaining, or posting from a place of anger or resentment doesn't fit the atmosphere we try to foster at all. Feel free to post those on !goodoffmychest@lemmy.world

Hello everyone,

As we moved here, I was thinking to recreate the regular threads using https://schedule.lemmings.world/

The ones we had on Lemm.ee were

  • Music Monday - What have you been listening to?
  • Cheerful Tuesday - What made you smile or laugh?
  • Hobbies Wednesday - What have you been doing?
  • Thursday - How is your week going?
  • Friday - What are your plans for the week-end?
  • Saturday - What have you watched this week?
  • Pets Sunday

First of all, do you have any ideas of other weekly threads that we could have?

Second, I am looking for other people to "own" the weekly threads, this community is your as well, after all!

@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works offered to handle the Sunday one, would any of you be interested in posting any of the other ones?

You can just use https://schedule.lemmings.world/ to schedule the post with a weekly recurrence.

I have been trying to be more intentional and analog with the way I communicate, among many other things.

I like sending postcards filled with notes and observations about the place I'm in when I travel, but don't plan on traveling a lot in the near future to save some money (hopefully to buy a house), and it doesn't feel right to send friends/family postcards from my hometown... And nobody ever sends reply postcards, anyway.

I think it would be fun to try the penpal thing, break out some lined paper and see how bad my handwriting has gotten over the years of constant digital communication...

Anywhere on earth is fine, international postage for a standard letter isn't that expensive, and it'd actually be kind of cool to know our little papers are traversing the globe and crossing oceans like the good ol' days. All I ask is that you actually want to try and keep it up for a while! I have no idea what a good cadence would be, maybe every-other week? ~once a month? We'll figure it out as we go, I'm sure.

I just think it would be fun and exciting to try and get to know someone the long, slow way, completely separate from the barrage of light-speed communication afforded these days.

I don't want to commit to more than 2 people, I know myself and feel like I'd get overwhelmed with more than 2.

In Star Trek: TNG, mine is Picard. In Wallace and Gromit, it's Wallace.

I've been told I don't but my dad snores quite loud. I haven't met a dad who didn't.

Whether you laughed out loud or just had a really happy moment, we want to hear all about it.

Hey everyone 👋

Lately, I’ve been feeling the need for more real, everyday connection, someone to talk to about life, random thoughts, or just share how our days went.

I’m hoping to find a kind, open-minded person to build a laid-back companionship with. Nothing heavy or dramatic, just mutual presence and support.

I’m also in a place where I’d love to give back in little ways. If I can help someone who’s going through a rough patch or just needs a small lift, I’m happy to do so where I can.

No expectations, no pressure. Just good company and meaningful chats. Feel free to reach out if this speaks to you 🌻

About an hour ago, I heard a strange noise outside and looked through my window to see some light moving in the grass. I did a quick recording from my phone but it was blurry because the camera kept focusing on the mosquito net, so I grabbed my headlamp to go outside to investigate.

It turns out my landlord got a real fancy lawnmower robot that was almost completely silent moving the lawn.

I go back in to watch some Youtube videos. About half an hour in, a lot of whacky channels start popping up recommending me videos of UFO sightings.

Coincidence or is it because I made a video with blurry lights while saying "What is this?"

I lean towards the first option because I avoid pseudo science channels like the plague and I didn't give the algorhythm any starting point. You know, like when you accidentally watch a basketball video and the whole feed turns into basketball until you train it that you're not a basketball Fan to make them go away.

Now I have to do that with all the UFO videos and weirdly enough sasquatch that got into the mix as well.

I think I have to degooglefy way more serious than I already do. I always have camera and mic deactivated in the system unless I get a call or take a picture/video, so I should be good during the day. I do that for over a year now and the coincidential recommendations that mimic some random stuff you talked about a couple hours earlier stopped completely. But sometimes I need those functions and I don't like some company using it for evil.

i am really interested in subtle body language/emotion indicators by characters in tv/film so i thought i'd yap about it. for context, this screenshot is from "wallace and gromit: the curse of the were-rabbit". for those who didn't watch the video, the black-haired guy is the posh antagonist, victor quartermaine. he wants to kill the creature called the "were-rabbit", so he goes to the old man (the vicar) for help.

when asking the vicar to tell him how to kill the creature, victor accidentally says "him". then, he corrects himself and says he meant "it". the vicar notices and raises an eyebrow at him.

victor refers to the were-rabbit as "him" because

SPOILERwallace is actually the were-rabbit and victor was aware.

i just love looking at body language, sorry about this lil rant. i'm autistic as hell lol.

I would sleep through my pillow being shifted or taken, my phone buzzing next to my ear/face, or being poked/slightly shaken, but I would wake up to loud laughing, yelling, smells, and ringtones.

I just went to get a sandwich. The ordering is (optionally) done via kiosk. This time, the kiosk started suggesting items for me based on what I'd purchased before. I was initially puzzled as to how it could recognize me prior to any identifying information being input, then realized that there was a small camera embedded in the kiosk, and that it must have done facial recognition.

Identifying customers isn't new; I understand that facial recognition has been used by grocery stores for loss prevention, to help flag people likely to steal things. But I wasn't aware that it'd reached the point of sticking all purchases into a database, regardless of the usual methods to obtain a unique identifier, like loyalty cards or obtaining a phone number.

Assuming that this becomes the norm, short of wearing a mask

which is a pain, and runs into anti-masking laws in some areas

I don't see how one can realistically avoid having all of one's purchasing being placed into a store's database for data-mining. That kind of bugs me

I'd like to be able to do stuff like purchase a sandwich without having the store profile me.

Thoughts? Ways to counter it? Okay with this/not okay?
