Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Hi, I am a computer nerd. I also took a computer programming class and got the highest score in the class, but I never followed up with advanced classes. Recently, I've thought of different ideas for software I'd like to try to create. I've heard about vibe coding. I know real programmers make fun of it, but I also have heard so much about it and people using it and paying for it that I have a hard time believing it writes garbage code all the time.

However, whenever I am trying to do things in linux and don't know how and ask an LLM, it gets it wrong like 85% of the time. Sometimes it helps, but a lot of times it's fucking stupid and just leads me down a rabbit hole of shit that won't work. Is all vibe coding actually like that too or does some of it actually work?

For example, I know how to set up a server, ssh in, and get some stuff running. I have an idea for an App and since everyone uses smart phones (unfortunately), I'd probably try to code something for a smart phone. But would it be next to impossible for someone like me to learn? I like nerdy stuff, but I am not experienced at all in coding.

I also am not sure I have the dedication to do hours and hours of code, despite possible autism, unless I were highly fucked up, possibly on huge amounts of caffeine or microdosing something. But like, it doesn't seem impossible.

Is this a rabbit hole worth falling into? Do most Apps just fail all the time? Is making an App nowadays like trying to win a lotto?

It would be cool to hear from real App developers. I am getting laid off, my expenses are low because I barely made anything at my job, I'll be getting unemployment, and I am hoping I can get a job working 20-30 hours a week and pay for my living expenses, which are pretty low.

Is this a stupid idea? I did well in school, but I'm not sure that means anything. Also, when I was in the programming class, the TA seemed much, much smarter at programming and could intuitively solve coding problems much faster due to likely a higher IQ. I'm honestly not sure my IQ is high enough to code. My IQ is probably around 112, but I also sometimes did better than everyone on tests for some reason, maybe because I'm a nerd. I'm not sure I will have the insight to tackle hard coding problems, but I'm not sure if those actually occur in real coding.

The same thing was happening with my GPU so I underclocked and undervolted it to hell using msi afterburner and now instead of getting 85 C during gaming sessions it's around 70 C. my CPU fan is always loud. i think the thermal paste is gone. I'm not willing to take my computer apart because where my computer is it's really awkward and if it bricks itself i have the money to buy a new one. rn the package temp is idling at 46-55 C, jumping every second. min temp is 45 C. the max temp is 80 C idling according to hwmonitor. i'm getting spikes in high temperature that last a second or so but when I'm playing a game it can spike to 95-100 C

UPDATE: Disabled Boost and undervolted my CPU, now temp spikes are much more reasonable. Max idle temp after 1 hour according to hwmonitor is 53 C which is a lot better than random spikes to 80 C lol. thx to everyone who commented!

After seeing the latest Apple WWDC with the introduction of the new design system, it was surprising to see how their redesigned 'Liquid Glass' interface shown in the live stream was exactly consistent with their developer build. It wasn't just a screen recorder thing either; the presentation demonstrated individual components and multiple screens with morphing and other custom animations that couldn't reasonably be simulated in an app. On the other hand, animating the interface with normal video editing software would be equally impractical when replicating the behaviour of the actual software for displaying example cases of apps.

Is it just a thing of ensuring impeccable QA in producing renders like this or do they have some specialised software for these purposes?

I’m a young mom with a pre-teen son and he’s called me “mommy” up until he was about 10 and a half. Since then he’s been calling me “Ma” which I find pretty cute. Especially when he extends it to “Maaa” when yelling from another room. Maybe it’s a southern thing lol. Just curious about what y’all call your moms?

Are you an ex-gasper? When and why did you stop gasping? You know when you say a word so many times in a short window and you forget what it means?

I’m looking for some advice as to what product(s) I would need to replace an access point in my house.

My current setup is crudely drawn below. The house is ancient and weirdly shaped, so needs multiple wireless access points to get decent coverage everywhere.

I have 300Mbps fibre to the premises which goes into the Wi-Fi router (R). I have a Cat 6 cable (red line) running from the router, outside the front of the house and back in through the back of the house where it connects to an old router (AP1) that is configured as a Wi-Fi bridge/access point.

Another Cat 6 cable (blue line) then runs from that access point to my cabin into another old router (AP2) that is configured as an access point so I can have Wi-Fi in there.

Basically I’ve chained the old routers and set them all up with the same Wi-Fi network and password so I can seamlessly connect automatically wherever I am, and all devices can see each other where relevant.

The issue is AP1 is failing every few days and giving very slow speeds. It’s fine after a reboot and goes back up to 300Mbps for a couple of days until it needs another kick.

I’d like to replace AP1 with something else. What I don’t know, is what would give the fastest/most consistent speeds.

Should I:

a) Just replace AP1 with another newer, more reliable router set to bridge/AP mode.

b) Replace AP1 with an Ethernet switch so that the red line and blue line connect to the switch, and connect a dedicated AP to the switch where AP1 is. Most inexpensive dedicated access points I’ve looked at don’t seem to have enough Ethernet ports to allow chaining, which is why I’m wondering if a switch is necessary.

c) Something else?

Assume I can’t run any new cables outside the house, i.e. I can’t be arsed to replace the red line because it would be a huge pain.

If you have specific recommendations of products, that would be great. Cost is a factor - I’m not looking to replace the whole setup with some expensive mesh product because 80% of the time I’m getting maximum speed with this current cheapo setup, it’s just that it’s annoying to have to reset AP1 regularly.

People say that this is more ethical than using AI. If this is really possible it may be hard to do?

Random thoughts just popped in my head and I just remembered that all the water in a given city is all centralized. Just add poison and boom, eradicated an entire city who are full of dissidents/opposition as punishment for voting the "wrong" way, or for a protest, or if the population is filled with "filthy undesirable [Insert Racial Group Here]", or something like that.

Kinda unsettling to see that we are all just attached to "the grid" 😖

May be phrasing it wrong, but I look at actions like Labor rights, Pride, Civil Rights, Black Panthers, etc. where actions of protesters felt much intense and made more of an impact in actually changing things vs now where there are protests but it feels like it constantly falls of deaf ears.

Have we just not hit that breaking point yet? Have we collectively been beat down so hard? Or have we forgotten how to truly fight for rights? Or… am I just completely off the mark and missing something else?

Example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Sony_Pictures_hack

Maybe I misunderstood what a hacker can do, but why not rob someone's credit card or bank account if they can do it to Sony?

Electing judges doesn't really make sense to me. Are people supposed to dig up every court case they've ruled on? (Or for prospective new judges, every case they've represented in as a lawyer?)

(I'm in USA Btw; Does any other country even "elect" judges? Such a weird thing IMO.)

I've been meaning to stop my Spotify sub because saving more money how ever small it may be. But I kind of like the discovery part of it.

Been using YouTube (Music) again for music listening honestly because it does have YouTube only artists and songs (not in an official partnership or similar, just that that's where people only upload there to share kind of thing), as well as live versions and in general the tons of covers, remixes and such.

Truth be told I like what YTM algorithm gives me recently.

Having said that, I am open to hear suggestions that further divorces from big tech.

I don't mind for anime/movies/shows as I rely on word of mouth in the various chat groups I'm already in. Maybe I should extend to music focused groups too?

It only appears occasionally. I have no alarms set, no timers, stopwatch etc. running.

Android phone. Searching got no joy.

Update: it was a scheduled message in signal. Didn't want to send my bestie memes too late at night. It does use the actual alarm icon though, weirdly.

Thanks everyone for your help!

A recent trip to the dumpster netted me a couple of old laptops (from around 2012). The batteries are completely flat and will not take a charge. I plan on using them as beater computers around the house, so battery life doesn't really matter but would be nice to have. The cheapest no-name batteries available for them are about $15 each. A used OEM battery with about 75% health is a dollar more.

For those who bought the cheapest aftermarket battery, was it worth it? Were the batteries surprisingly good or am I better off with a used but original one?

nb4 "just Google it," fuck off.

Saw a meme reminding me about primaries next year, and the top comment was about voting at primaries and for local positions. My problem is I have no idea how to find where or when these elections are taking place. I don't see them advertised or mentioned anywhere; hell, sometimes I only know an election even happened because of the news reporting after the fact, if I even hear about that. Last time I tried looking for a local election, I couldn't find any information on voting dates, locations, or times, nor any information on the people who were on the ballot. Because of that, I wasn't able to vote, despite driving around town the supposed day looking for booths in a last ditch effort.

Is there some website or something I can check for consistent, reliable, and complete information? I know these things differ by state, but a) I'd rather not give out my location, and b) I imagine I'm not the only one with this question: others could use similar resources for their states.

On Windows Vista and every subsequent version of Windows, if I search for a file and include the entire C:\ drive, I might very well have time to make tea or a sandwich while the search results come in. On Windows XP, using the search dialog with the animated dog, I can search the entire C:\ drive and expect it to be done in a minute or two, if not in seconds.

It can't just be nostalgia; I can replicate these results on period-accurate hardware today. What changed with Vista to make file searching so much slower, even with indexing enabled?

I want to create, sort, filter, query, update, etc. hierarchical data like JSON or XML or YAML with the same ease as a spreadsheet. Does such a thing exist?

Does Pixellmator^TM^ do most of what PhotoShop^TM^ does?

How would you recommend going about that given these constraints?

I've used Lemmy for quite some time, but I haven't found an Engrish community, other than the lemm.ee one, and the instance there died. Any alternatives?

I use namingschemes.com but it has very few games in it, and it's focused on networking naming schemes :)

I'm thinking the future is gonna have a "Hand Terminal" sort of thing that replaces everything.

Last winter it was really dry and cold and my ass cheeks started itching. I, of course, scratched them. I apparently scratched too hard as I developed welts on both ass cheeks. The welts itch and I can't stop scratching because I have no self control apparently.

I use lotion multiple times a day, I've used benadryl itch cream. Nothing seems to work. The itch is greatest after my workout and when I get in the shower. I thought maybe it was water temperature related, but I've gone from hot to cold and still itch like crazy.

I apparently need a cone of shame for my ass.

Anyone faced this before?
