I’ve just made an account here to lighten the load on lemmy.world/support my home instance. My email verification came through straight away (unlike when I previously tried to sign up a few weeks back) and I was able to join local communities without problem. But when I try and join communities on other instances I just get “subscription pending”. These are really large communities which people from here must have joined so I’m a bit confused. Is this a feddit issue or an issue with the host instances? Thanks!

In addition, if a user subscribes to a Feddit UK community the comments from before they subbed won't appear unless they're loaded directly by a user on that instance

Any chance of the feddit.uk instance hosting this along with wefwef?

So last night a XSS scripting attack was found on all Lemmy instances. See the lemmy world update here https://feddit.uk/post/453040

What this means is that hackers could inject their own "script" when any user viewed a comment/post that the hackers made. The hackers would then grab your JWT token with the script so they could impersonate that user. (And perform any actions on behalf of the user)

Luckily, it looks like I haven't been compromised so the site config should all be the same

What has been done about this

I've removed any comments or posts which included the script see here https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1895

I would have removed all custom emojis as well but there was none in our DB, this may potentially mean that this site was not affected. Just in case, I've also rotated the JWT tokens so all tokens are now invalid. This means you will have to logout and log back into the instance

Shoutout to @clara@feddit.uk for messaging me about this and bringing it to my attention

Lemmy.world and some other sites are currently compromised. I just wanted to check the security arrangements here at Feddit to make sure we are not also vulnerable?

I am sure asset sizes are subject to change depending on so many factors from app instances, to theming, etc. but I thought it would be useful to have a location where we can discuss asset sizing options the ensure good looking community headers, logos, etc.

I have started by attaching this one, a desktop header. From what I can tell, the default sizing (visible area on standard desktop and mobile) are similar but there is an aspect of overflow when the dynamic resizing happens.

The attached image is 3200x1800 in full and the main 'visible' area is central at 3000x900. This means that header images should be designed with the core elements in that area. You can scale the image as required but hopefully this helps.

Big update this, this update comes with captcha being available which has now been re-enabled for sign up. This means signups are once again open (as captcha should filter out most bots).

Quite a few UI changes in this one and quite a few performance updates as well (mainly around how the database works). If anyone is interested our CPU average is around 8-10% usage and the memory usage has dropped to around 5% usage so the instance is looking pretty stable.

I'm struggling to find a particular community, audiobooks@lemmy.ml

I'm subscribe on another account not on feddit.uk but it doesn't even appear in searches on feddit.uk.

Any suggestions?

Seeing as this conversation is going on everywhere right now, what's the approach to Meta going to be here on UK? Personally I'm all for defederation as soon as possible, what does everyone else think?

Hey everyone,

I've deployed a feddit.uk specific instance of wefwef at app.feddit.uk

If you haven't heard of wefwef before, it's essentially a mobile UI which you can deploy as a PWA to your phone, the link for the actual app is here https://wefwef.app

So that we don't rely on wefwef servers, I've deployed a local version which should be faster as it runs on the same server as feddit.uk so is essentially a second UI to the regular web app as I've limited to feddit.uk only at the moment.

Thanks, Tom

Hey everyone, It seems a lot of people are having issues verifying their email when first signing up as they are not receiving the email.

This is because around 20-30% or emails sent from admin@feddit.uk are being bounced due to being marked as spam. I'm working on fixing this at the moment, (the domain is on a domain blacklist on spamhaus.org)

In the meantime, please send an email to admin@feddit.uk from the email that needs verifying and I will verify the email manually which should resolve the issue.

Thanks, Tom

Does something need to be set on the instance or is that on their side?

90

Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've tried a couple of times now, and the 'Create' button on https://feddit.uk/create_community seemingly does nothing.

Hi, hopefully @tom will see this. Ive registered on feddit.uk but cant login. I get email not verified. can you please help? Thanks

Truly loving this instance, and UK servers are clearly helping with speed for both the website version and API calls from Connect for Lemmy.

Thanks @tom@feddit.uk - your work is greatly appreciated (buy him a coffee!) and I truly hope Lemmy takes off as the new MANY front pages of the Internet. 🙂

If you prefer the user interface of old reddit, then you should visit mlmym here

The code for mlmym is on GitHub and here's the domain link so that you can use it with other lemmy instances.

I was just trying to access Feddit.UK via a popular VPN. It looked like the site didn't even exist. Just a gray error page.

I'm not sure this is a good policy.

EDIT: I have clarification from ProtonVPN about what the problem is with accessing Feddit.uk. They have a service called NetShield which blocks IP addresses associated with malware and trackers. There is a false positive for Feddit.uk. Their team is aware of it, and will hopefully fix it. In the meantime, people can access Feddit.uk using ProtonVPN by turning NetShield off. It works for me.

They just seem to be automated posts from reddit, with no comments.

I never actually read them because I kind of boycotting Reddit and can't really interact with them anyway, so they just clog up my feed.

Does anyone else find them annoying?

@Emperor@feddit.uk mentioned that we're now ranked 20th by active users, looking at the ranking site, we don't seem to have a banner.

There is a sad emoji because of that :(

If people are interested, have a go, and post in this thread. You'll might want to be roughly the shape of this banner from lemmy.world, or this one from monyet.cc. and should try to make it work on both light and dark mode.

Collages are also cool, try to keep any photos free-to-use.

Bonus points if it involves crayons.

If I visit a community from Feddit and then another instance, the comments often differ. I understand there are some issues with defederation between some instances, but this doesn't seem related to that.

For example, here's the post-race discussion on the Formula 1 community on Feddit: https://feddit.uk/post/320484

And then the same discussion on lemmy.world: https://lemmy.world/post/950479

I don't understand why a significant number of comments aren't visible on Feddit.

Lemmyverse currently has us as the 20th largest instance when measured by active users. Which I feel is about right, we aren't going to make a fuss and would be a tad embarrassed if we'd found ourselves in the top ten.

So, thanks @tom@feddit.uk and well done everyone for making the place watm and welcoming. Anyway, enough of that. Carry on doing what you were doing, it's clearly working.

Hi all. I've chosen Connect For Lemmy as my go-to android lemmy app for now but it has a strange quirk. (Unless this is true?) While trying to search or even access communities, I'm getting an error page telling me that feddit is under maintenance. There's even a banner informing me this across the bottom of the app.

Is this an app bug or something server side?

I tried signing up to this instance using a disposable email address but the verification email never came through.

Do you have a rule against disposable email addresses?

Thanks
