Scaling sequence length has become a critical demand in the era of large language models. However, existing methods struggle with either computational complexity or model expressivity, rendering the maximum sequence length restricted. In this work, we introduce LongNet, a Transformer variant that can scale sequence length to more than 1 billion tokens, without sacrificing the performance on shorter sequences. Specifically, we propose dilated attention, which expands the attentive field exponentially as the distance grows. LongNet has significant advantages: 1) it has a linear computation complexity and a logarithm dependency between tokens; 2) it can be served as a distributed trainer for extremely long sequences; 3) its dilated attention is a drop-in replacement for standard attention, which can be seamlessly integrated with the existing Transformer-based optimization. Experiments results demonstrate that LongNet yields strong performance on both long-sequence modeling and general language tasks. Our work opens up new possibilities for modeling very long sequences, e.g., treating a whole corpus or even the entire Internet as a sequence.

The development of neural networks to create artificial intelligence in computers was originally inspired by how biological systems work. These "neuromorphic" networks, however, run on hardware that looks nothing like a biological brain, which limits performance.

Now, researchers from Osaka University and Hokkaido University plan to change this by creating neuromorphic "wetware." The work is published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

While neural-network models have achieved remarkable success in applications such as image generation and cancer diagnosis, they still lag far behind the general processing abilities of the human brain. In part, this is because they are implemented in software using traditional computer hardware that is not optimized for the millions of parameters and connections that these models typically require.

A team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Colorado, has reported the successful implementation of a 400,000 pixel superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) that they say will pave the way for the development of extremely light-sensitive large-format superconducting cameras. Their paper, "A superconducting-nanowire single-photon camera with 400,000 pixels," was published in the preprint repository arXiv on June 15.

Researchers from the University of Colorado's Department of Physics and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology also participated in the project.

The camera is now the largest of its type. Its pixel array is 400 times greater than the previous largest photon camera. It can work in various light frequencies from the visible to ultraviolet and infrared range and capture images at super high-speed rates, in matters of picoseconds.

We used ChatGPT, Text-To-Speech Synthesis, and a Raspberry Pi to create a digital assistant that can reply as almost anyone you can think of - like Joe Rogan, David Attenborough, or NDT.

We also talk at the end about the future of this technology, and AI as a whole - there's a large potential for something like this to impact almost every aspect of our daily lives, and it increasingly feels like we're on the precipice of a paradigm shift. Which is super exciting and also terrifying lol

Abstract:

Creation of arbitrary features with high resolution is critically important in the fabrication of nano-optoelectronic devices. Here, sub-50 nm surface structuring is achieved directly on Sb2S3 thin films via microsphere femtosecond laser irradiation in far field. By varying laser fluence and scanning speed, nano-feature sizes can be flexibly tuned. Such small patterns are attributed to the co-effect of microsphere focusing, two-photons absorption, top threshold effect, and high-repetition-rate femtosecond laser-induced incubation effect. The minimum feature size can be reduced down to ~30 nm (λ/26) by manipulating film thickness. The fitting analysis between the ablation width and depth predicts that the feature size can be down to ~15 nm at the film thickness of ~10 nm. A nano-grating is fabricated, which demonstrates desirable beam diffraction performance. This nano-scale resolution would be highly attractive for next-generation laser nano-lithography in far field and in ambient air.
