It feels like there shouldn't really be discussion on this, which is when reps trying to defend prison labor start to speak up

Slavery is slavery. Allowing profit from incarceration incentivizes incarceration.

Yeah, it's the post-Trump reality. They realized they don't need to dog-whistle anymore because they maintain power through culture war bullshit and gerrymandering.
