I could give a talk on domestic abuse, I know loads about it. I could also talk a bit about coercive control in other settings like cults.

Recently I've been doing loads of research into LGBTQI domestic abuse. So I could do a bit on that as well.

any like top books you would recommend (bonus points for being academic or, you know, filled with footnotes and citations ๐Ÿ˜…)?

I feel like I know too little about both domestic abuse and cults considering how frequently religious trauma and domestic abuse comes up in my life โ€ผ๏ธ

I'm so glad you asked! Yes it's everywhere, it's inescapable and too many people suffer it. Religious trauma is the right phrase, it really can be devastating and destroy how people think.

The greatest book on DA ever written is Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft. He also has an academic one The Batterer As Parent.

Emma Katz wrote Coercive Control in Mother and Children's lives and all her research is amazing.

For extremist groups see Steven Hassan he developed the BITE model explaining their control tactics. Coercive Control in extremist groups and organisations isn't researched as much. Key points include how they control information (eg what you can read or watch), but also time through mandatory work and seminars so you're exhausted and isolated. But the biggest thing is changing how you think, so things like thought stopping techniques.

Thanks for your interest and wanting to learn!
