Welcome to the lemmy.world community for Portland, Oregon!

This community has kind of been empty since it was created, I'm hoping to change that!

Unlike "other" Portland communities you may have seen "elsewhere", I believe in a "warts and all" approach. You are free to take off your Rose tinted glasses and talk about topics that are dragging our city down.

At the same time, sunset pics, snowmageddon, traffic monster, cones, that's all welcome as well. Let's collectively keep Portland weird!

2024 is going to be an interesting year politically with all the changes to city government, I will attempt to tag political threads with a [Politics] tag and encourage users to do so as well.

Other than the lemmy.world restrictions on spam, copyrighted material, and adult material (USE that NSFW tag!), there's only one real way to get in trouble here:

  1. Don't attack other users.

It's OK to go after Teargas Ted, it's OK to say Rene Gonzales is a fascist, ACAB, BLM, whatever floats your boat (WEFYB).

It's NOT OK to attack or diminish another user. Feel free to disagree, you can point out the many ways you think they're wrong, just don't start throwing perjoratives AT OTHER USERS.

go ahead and ruin the ending

be that same shit that happened with Reagan and that bitch wife of his

big slashes in healthcare spending with less healthcare for citizens, shit is going to cost more because of tarrifs, and nothing will change it but the controllers of the puppets that "run" the government will make it so

be asshat democrat that claims he is progressive like bernie that will claim on the peoples side the whole time

a democrat gets elected in 2028 and claims all is saved and then the next or the next after that we then vote in republicans

not that they actually get "voted in" since the elections are all a sham and the winners prepicked everytime

wash and repeat

only a mass upstart is changing anything - job walkouts, nonstop protests, no consumerism

things that will never happen anywhere please prove me wrong

I mean, the big "ruin the ending" is that none of these protests in Oregon will actually mean anything.

Trump and his crew don't care what Oregon thinks.

2/2 Senators and 5/6 Representatives are already Democrats and are on the same side as the protest.

The one Republican rep, Cliff Bentz, OR-2, has no incentive to change.

I went to the one in Portland. It was such good energy- it invigorates everyone present. It gives us energy to do other things as well.

The fact that Trump doesn’t care about Oregon doesn’t mean that “doing nothing” is a better option. Don’t discourage people from taking action. If we are gathering and talking to each other we’re more likely to find and join in other efforts.

Speaking of which - what is it that you would suggest the good people of Oregon be doing to make a difference?

#1 thing to make a difference is to take the protests to D.C. Shut that shit down.

I've seen estimates that, globally, around 5 million people protested, but because it was distributed, they are being safely ignored.

Get even HALF that to D.C. and cripple the city? That's something that can't be ignored.

I did this more when I lived on the east coast and could hop on a bus - but it’s wicked expensive to fly and get a hotel. 😛 I have done it, and would be willing to again - I just can’t afford it regularly.

Oh, it definitely needs to be planned in advance.
