Rumours have been swirling in recent months about the future of Doctor Who beyond the upcoming Series 15. From speculation about the Disney+ deal falling through, to talk of Ncuti Gatwa quitting, and questions around Russell T Davies’ own future with the show. Now, in a new interview with BBC Newsround, Davies has strongly indicated that a “pause” is on the cards.
The segment began with Ncuti Gatwa and new companion Verada Sethu being asked if there was “any news about Series 3”. Gatwa, clearly cautious, responded, “I don’t know anything.”
Then the interview cuts to Davies, and his answer is far more illuminating. Up to now, Davies had maintained that no decisions about the future would be made until Series 15 had concluded. But now, even that cautious optimism seems to have faded.
Davies stated:
“I kind of know that the Doctor’s reached the status of like Robin Hood. Sometimes there might be a pause, and during that pause, the viewers of Newsround now will grow up a few years and start writing stories and they’ll bring it back. So I have absolute faith that that will survive because I am living proof of it and that’s what happens to good ideas. No good idea ever dies.”
This marks the strongest indication yet that a hiatus will follow the next series. Notably, Davies’ remark about today’s viewers “growing up” before reviving the show implies that any potential break may not be brief, but a significant pause that could stretch over several years.
Honestly, a decent hiatus is long overdue at this point. After Capaldi's first season in 2014, I gave up on it and consider "The Day of the Doctor" as the finale/stopping point. I watched bits of "The Power of the Doctor" (which my wife watched in full) and it just felt like really bad fanfic. Nothing I have read about the Chibnall era or RTD's return has convinced me that it would be worth returning to the show.
It needs a good break and then a completely fresh production team to come in and start it again in future, at which point I'll try it out again.
There's no guarantee that it would come back a third time though. Clamouring for a hiatus is pretty much clamouring for a cancellation now because you now have a show that was cancelled two times due to a whole load of issues and I don't think it would be worth the risk for anyone to try it because it could just fail a third time.
Also IMO, you should absolutely try out the rest of the Capaldi era. It's my favourite era and it's the best nuwho ever's been .World Enough and Time /The Doctor Falls/Twice Upon a time is actually a perfect finale for Doctor Who and is where it stops for me.
it already has come back a third time though. the disney run is a new series.

It was a soft reboot but it's still the same run. The disney run is still nuwho because people are celebrating the 20th anniversary of nuwho which includes the disney doctors and that is confirmed through official promos for the anniversary and not a site run by fans. Source
