I didn't even know the fediverse was that old.
I didn’t either! ActivityPub came out in 2018, what was Fediverse before ActivityPub?
@compostgoblin There were several other protocols such as OStatus, Diaspora, and Zot prior to ActivityPub. Mastodon originally used OStatus, and switched to ActivityPub later. A lot of platforms are older than Mastodon too.

Usenet is 45 years old, and we’ve been living through an Eternal September for over 30 years.
oh yah. i only recently got into usenet so ive been missing out all these years.
@compostgoblin Some of the earliest platforms included StatusNet, Diaspora, Friendica, Red Matrix/Hubzilla, etc. All are much older than Mastodon.
Hubzilla was my first foray into fediverse. I like a lot of what it does and how it does things especially the nomadic users. Zot is also really interesting and a good contender to ap.
