An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake or pool that forms when a wide meander of a river is cut off, creating a free-standing body of water.

I just think they're neat!

In Australia, oxbow lakes are called billabongs.

We have a number of these on our farm, some still have water and others are just low areas that grow the best grass.
