Still getting into lemmy and understanding federation, but as in the title, should I make multiple accounts on different instances? I created this account on lemmy.ca, but let's say I want to be a mod for a community on another instance or I want to start a community on another instance. I need an account on that instance right?

Also, is there any way to keep all these accounts linked to one another?

You'd only need a new account if you wanted to make a community on another instance.

You can be a moderator of a community on another instance.

Interesting, thanks And how would I become a mod, just message an existing mod?

I was under the impression that you cannot view content on instances where federation is blocked from the instance you joined. Is that correct?

Well yes that's true. Most instances are federating to most other instances though. And you can always go directly to that instance's site and view everything. Just won't be able to interact

Following with this - If the instance your account is with dies… you lose everything right?

Is there (or is there going to be) a way to back up and then import your user account elsewhere if you needed to? Or will it always be the case you’d need to start from scratch on a new instance?

youd lose access to your stuff yes - but if lemmy follows mastodon, youll be able to tranefer your account to another instance but thats not available yet

You don't had to but I say it never hurts to least have another backup account but on a different instance.

Generally - no. Just make one. It’s similar to email - you can have an account in gmail, yahoo, and live if you want. Or you can just have one.

You also will be able to transfer your account later to a different instance, but this feature is still to be added.

Account migration isn't yet supported with Lemmy.

you need an account on the instance to create a community there. but you wouldnt need multiple accounts to browse other instances, youd be able to find them though your account on the instance youd mod on :)
