Hi! So I have had surfshark for a while and been generally quite satisfied. They do everything I need them to do this far with no fuss and bundle in some handy other services as well.

My annual plan expires in a couple of months and I'm curious what else is out there, as I only started SF because it was heavily discounted at the time. From a new provider, I just need privacy, the ability to torrent totally public domain content, and a static IP. Do you have any suggestions for other options worth considering? I just like to have options. Thanks in advance!

I host my own VPN. All I need when I am out and about.

When you torrent totally public domain stuff you most likely want a VPN with enough privacy to not give your IP to authorities. I can’t see that point if you run a VPN on a machine somewhere in the cloud which has your name registered to it.

I use my home router as a VPN server.

I use IVPN, paid for with crypto over Tor. It’s been amazing so far, but to make things easier I’ve taken to deploying my own “proxy” to it in the cloud (I cache DNS among other things).

I’m surprised that no one mentioned IVPN

None, get a $5 vps and setup openvpn

AirVPN since about 8 years. Highly recommended. If you want something flashy that wins design awards looks elsewhere :) from a technical perspective they are absolutely top notch with every feature you could possibly wish for.

Airvpn with 3 year plan, windscribe with discount link you can find on reddit or their newsletter discounts are both good value

I have several VPSes around the world each with OpenVPN.

I'm using Safeshell because it's highly secure and has excellent stability.

I use NordVPN, audited no-logs and they have static IPs to buy

ExpressVPN and I've got it running on my router, which makes things really simple for the rest of the network.

I self host, it's way more convenient (opinion) and I don't really care about anonymity. Also less expensive.

I host my own OpenVpn server in 2 different countries

[–] ikwyl6@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do you use a VPS for this? If not, how do you do it?

[–] Hydridity@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

No VPS, all running on my home servers.

I have one server at home in country where I reside in, so if I want secure tunnel when for example on public wifi, I just connect to my home in this country

And second one is in my home country where my relative lets me keep my second low power server at their home, which I use if I need to bypass geoblocked content of my current country

I host my own VPN on a VPS. This way I am sure all the logging is truly disabled.

Hmm, I use expressvpn but don’t see anyone here mentioning it. Is there something I should know about them?

[–] layer4andbelow@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I was thinking the same.

It might be a little pricey compared to the rest? It works very well for my use case and I've never been bottlenecked by the VPN which is nice.

Honestly, if you're happy with the service surfshark had been providing, why roll the dice and switch? Stick with what's making you happy.

What do people think of Mozilla VPN? That's what I use currently.
