For the record I was posting in support of inclusive language, but pointing out that context and convention matter.

They seem to have even scrubbed my comment from their instance, lol.

(not sure if this is the right community, sorry)

Hi, someone posted this on another server. I'd like to request we defederate with rammy.site and exploding-heads.com as well. I scrolled through some of their posts and comments and it's full of ridiculous anti-left propaganda, for example a post where some liberal Florida family fleeing the state when some child protection laws got passed, implying liberals abuse children and won't live in a state that doesn't allow them to. Just take a look for yourself.

" Admins of Lemmy.ml please consider defederating from rammy.site it has been taken over by right wing malicious actors from exploding-heads.com and the admin is nowhere to be found.

It is imperative that you take action as soon as possible the users on rammy are using the site to spread their messages to a further audience, we must nip this in the bud. If you don't believe me check the instance for yourself, you'll see it dominated with bigoted right wing posts and spam communities."

Edit: So many commenters think this is about political opinions or disagreement. It's not. If I said "Mixing bleach and ammonia is good for you" I bet some of you would call that a political disagreement.

Welcome to SDF Chatter - a federated Lemmy instance

Am I the only Zoomer? I see a lot of "I remember"-type responses, so I have to wonder.

New Lemmy Drama: "Feddit.org officially announces they will ban criticism of Israel and pro-Palestinian posts and comments."

I find this morally reprehensible. I have always spoken against defederazation when others have mentioned it. This is too much. Apologies if this upsets anyone.

Palestinians are human beings and have a right to life.

Edit: I have been persuaded by some thoughtful replies. I will block them from my view. I no longer support making the decision for others. Thanks all.

I remember using Audiograbber at one point and was surprised to see it was still maintained.

I'm sure many of you have seen this image floating around online at some point.

It seems a rather neat idea, though I'd be worried about any sort of accident, or even potential fight, ripping that piercing right out.

But, what if the lenses attached with magnets instead?...

I've gotten really interested in old Computers since I got my Commodore PET 2 months ago, so to play some good ol MS Train Simulator and Stronghold 2, I got this massive beauty. Here is a little size comparison between it and my main PC

I waited so long to come forward and tell my story because I didn't think anyone would believe me. But now I want people to know what happened to me, because if knowing what happened to me could prevent it happening to them, then I want them to know.

Federation is broken.

It's been broken for days - and that's not to say for months, because I charitably include the few hours it worked again lately for some reason.

I don't know if other instances are that thoroughly broken, because the rest of Lemmy seems to be chugging along just fine. It's just us poor SDF user suckers.

And no-one gives a rat's ass.

Truly pathetic...

I remember my dad bringing home a BBC Micro when we were kids. I knew just enough to get Chuckie Egg running.

Later we had a PC running Windows 3.1. I was an expert in crashing the plane on F-19 Stealth Fighter. One day I deleted the OS and that was the end of that computer..

Some years later we got an old Elonex PC that dad's work were getting rid of. It was just good enough to run Windows 95. We had dial-up internet from Freeserve for a time - we would have I think 2 hours in the evening to use it.

I remember

- Trying and failing to download shitty quality videos from wwf.com (I was a huge Attitude-era Wrestling mark...)

- Playing questionable games on Newgrounds

- Trawling Yahoo directories and webrings for random weird stuff

- Trying to download a low-bitrate rip of the Macarena from Kazaa and giving up when it estimated 2 days DL time.

- Terrible browser-war era websites. Broken Javascript/HTML. BLINKING TEXT. Incompatible flash videos.

I broke our family computers so often that I knew the Windows licence key without having to look. I learned how to fix the computer out of sheer terror for what my dad might do if he came home from work to find the PC broken again.

After we got rid of the dialup I would go the library pretty much every day. I had literally boxes of floppy disks that I would stuff into my pockets so that I could download stuff to take home. Mostly old emulators, ROMs and text adventures from ifarchive.

Crazy to think the lengths I would happily go to for things we take for granted now.

I am enamored with the idea of SDF, and I think it is an important part of computing history and the present. That being said, I am curious as to whether anyone actually finds it useful—aside from the fact that it hosts the instance!!

UPDATE: @SDF@lemmy.sdf.org has responded

It is temporary as lemmy.world was cascading duplicates at us and the only way to keep the site up reliably was to temporarily drop them. We’re in the process of adding more hardware to increase RAM, CPU cores and disk space. Once that new hardware is in place we can try turning on the firehose. Until then, please patient.

ORIGINAL POST:

Starting sometime yesterday afternoon it looks like our instance started blocking lemmy.world: https://lemmy.sdf.org/instances

A screenshot of the page at https://lemmy.sdf.org/instances showing the lemmy.world instance on the blocklist

This is kind of a big deal, because 1/3rd of all active users originate there! A pie chart depicting the top instances by usershare. The lemmy.world instance is in the top spot with 1/3 of the total usershare

Was this decision intentional? If so, could we get some clarification about it? @SDF@lemmy.sdf.org
