I wonder who's going around doing statistics on this, but can't say I'm surprised

Belgian tourism boomed last year. What are your holiday plans this summer? I'm going to the Belgian coast for a week.

Tooting my own horn here for a bit, but I was disappointed by the limited press coverage and complete lack of political reaction to the biggest climate action of this kind in our country.

I was wondering what you guys think of these kind of actions? Justified or not? Good target for something like this?

Full disclosure: I participated there, so I'm fully supportive of course.

  1. The article is paywalled
  2. This is the gist of it and my options
  3. I know we have this financing in please to “lessen corruption, bribing and lobbying” 🤔

This graph shows in MILLIONS how much the total of them have accumulated over the years:

This is the distribution of 78 MILLION for this year

But yeah… it’s the lower class, the poor, the small business owners and the migrants who take all our money 🤦‍♀️

Reading this truly made me sick. The lack of self awareness of them even more. Don’t get me started on the feeling of helplessness.. sometimes I get the feeling the whoever we vote to represent us, it never changes. It only seems to get worse (30+ year of voting here)

I do believe in democracy but this? This doesn’t feel anything like. Aux contraire!

Now if you excuse me I urgently need to pay 2x the same provincie belasting - but different amounts - for my small home, just because I’m a small Bussiness ower who operates things from my home office even though it’s only a few square meters, I still have to fork a minimum tax for that. Sigh.

Oh and yes the Ki as well………

I mean.. common! 😒

When I saw the first STIB - MIVB portals a few years ago, I was thinking they wouldn’t last long due to how agressive they are. Although being an honest commuter paying all my trips, I have been almost sliced in two by them multiple times (without injuries except for my self esteem ). but those doors slamming into elderly persons could send them to the hospital.

And now we even have to scan to get out of some stations, this is generating extra delay during peak hours, sometimes there are only two lanes for a whole fucking metro… Everyone having to scan, not everyone is ready to scan, sometimes the scanning does not work for a single person which adds another extra delay… There is no way to have a soooth exit flow.

If we want to reduce the number of cars in Brussels we need to find better solutions…

Noticeable improvements here on our home instance at Lemmy.world!

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/1061471

Another day, another update.

More troubleshooting was done today. What did we do:

  • Yesterday evening @phiresky@phiresky@lemmy.world did some SQL troubleshooting with some of the lemmy.world admins. After that, phiresky submitted some PRs to github.
  • @cetra3@lemmy.ml created a docker image containing 3PR's: Disable retry queue, Get follower Inbox Fix, Admin Index Fix
  • We started using this image, and saw a big drop in CPU usage and disk load.
  • We saw thousands of errors per minute in the nginx log for old clients trying to access the websockets (which were removed in 0.18), so we added a return 404 in nginx conf for /api/v3/ws.
  • We updated lemmy-ui from RC7 to RC10 which fixed a lot, among which the issue with replying to DMs
  • We found that the many 502-errors were caused by an issue in Lemmy/markdown-it.actix or whatever, causing nginx to temporarily mark an upstream to be dead. As a workaround we can either 1.) Only use 1 container or 2.) set proxy_next_upstream timeout; in nginx.

Currently we're running with 1 lemmy container, so the 502-errors are completely gone so far, and because of the fixes in the Lemmy code everything seems to be running smooth. If needed we could spin up a second lemmy container using the proxy_next_upstream timeout; workaround but for now it seems to hold with 1.

Thanks to @phiresky@lemmy.world , @cetra3@lemmy.ml , @stanford@discuss.as200950.com, @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com , @jelloeater85@lemmy.world , @TragicNotCute@lemmy.world for their help!

And not to forget, thanks to @nutomic@lemmy.ml and @dessalines@lemmy.ml for their continuing hard work on Lemmy!

And thank you all for your patience, we'll keep working on it!

Oh, and as bonus, an image (thanks Phiresky!) of the change in bandwidth after implementing the new Lemmy docker image with the PRs.

Interesting to see it really seems like everyone across the board used less and less energy.

What did you all change? Any specific tools or tricks?

Personally I didn't even change my heating level but just used the timers a lot more with sharper cutoffs. And I did use smart plugs between my media appliances and my pc to make sure they are off when I leave the house, as well as being less casual about turning off the lights in rooms that I'm not in. Compared to 2019 (so before more WFH) that's like a 20% savings on gas, and 15% on electricity for me.

I suggest to keep the slowchats weekly until there's need for more. (but feel free to disagree here!)

r/belgium reopened yesterday and I made a post inviting people over to our community here. It turned out to be a lot more controversial than I expected but I hope we can build our own community, not as rivals but as (distant) friends.

I have been considering starting higher education studies in Belgium (mainly in Flanders) due to several factors such as low fees, its central position, the opportunity to speak English (nonetheless I want to study the local language), the fact that Flanders is a rich region, etc.

Is it a good move (I come from southern Europe), considering also the quality of life and job opportunities?

Now that a lot of 3rd party apps for reddit have shut down there have been loads of new users joining the various Lemmy instances. So who got here today and what has been your experience so far?

I'm here to help should you have any questions about Lemmy, lemmy.world or life in general (I can not really recommend that last one).

Anyway, welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay 😁

EDIT: I created seperated threads for this not too long ago but I think it's useful to post them again.

  • Some things might still be confusing to people, I read a comment below about someone not knowing how to browse content from different instances for example. I really suggest you read this post by lemmy.world admin @ruud which does a wonderful job to explain a lot of it.
  • If you're wondering what 3rd party apps there are available, this thread seems to list them all!
