Camping opportunities are relatively rare in Europe, but this island in Malta has cheap camping. on the other inhabited islands (Malta and Good), public transit, restrooms, and wifi are plentiful and local food is extremely cheap. You can get local tfira for a couple euros or a passtizzi filled with peas or cheese for even less. With an ultralight pack, all of Gozo is walkable, though the island of Malta is split by a largely impassable highway. I'd recommend the bus for €2.50.

I did Iceland last fall, solo, as a 6 day whirlwind tour around the loop road (yes, it was awesome). This fall (late Oct) I'm getting 4 days with the wife and am looking for the coolest excursions around the Golden Circle, which I mostly skipped last year. We'll be staying south of the GC in Selfoss with a small 4WD vehicle, but don't intend to go offroad.

Both of us are semi-fit (lol-American) so casual hiking is great, but probably should keep it to 10 km / 500-600m rise for a single hike, and under 15-18km a day total. Free is nice, but for something really cool we could spring $150-200pp for a tour.

Oh, and I'd like to find a hot spring that is not as pricey or as busy as Blue Lagoon; ideally quiet and casual.

I booked a flight to Japan for the last week of October and the first two weeks in November.

My plans so far are very vague: For the first week I want to stay in Tokyo, and in the other two weeks I would like to visit two or more cities or towns around the main island or Hokkaido (the northern island). I plan to travel by train and bus.

I would appreciate any tips and inspiration from your experiences in Japan – or just write me some locations that you would like to see when you travel there yourself.

My budget will be around $3000 excluding the flight. A friend will accompany me, so will be able to split the rent.

I am trying to research hotel prices around London, but have no idea where places like West Drayton, Slough, and Crawley are. I haven't had any success locating a map of areas around London that tell me where these places are. I am basically having to create my own, but it's so time consuming and I am sure there has to be something like this out there somewhere.

Just pulled up a map of downtown to search for the intersection my budget and convenient lodging for a week in Amsterdam. The wife is a huge history nut and I mostly like looking at the architecture. No clubbing, nothing stronger than beer, no threesomes. Roughing it, when we're on vacay as a couple, is defined as a "major flag hotel that doesn't have 24 hour room service." We'd like to explore as much as possible on foot (/public transportation). We're totally down for a boutique apartment, though, if one comes up.

Anyone have a favorite semi-posh location that can be had for <$200 night in the shoulder season (October-ish).

I'm planning a trip to Bulgaria and Turkey, and I'm considering crossing the land border between the two countries by bus. I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with this route and could provide some guidance.

Are you flipping through a Frommer's, scrolling on your phone, spreading printed PDF maps, or driving a multi-monitor workstation?

I'm coming off some UK/EU travel and, for three of us, we were burning a solid $300/day for hotel, food, entertainment (cheap museums, mostly) and incidentals. The worst part is that the hotels we stayed at were probably a notch or two lower than I'd have liked, trying to economize.

I'm planning out another trip to Copenhagen and Amsterdam for next fall, and am just throwing $200 a night at the hotel number in hopes of being close, but even that turns up few options in/near the cities.

Of particular interest is that not only will the 100ml limitation per-container go away, but the total liquid volume will increase to 2L. Plus your e-devices can stay in your bag. I would love to see this propagate to the US's TSA and the EU/EEA (and the rest of the world).

The definition of a shoestring budget is pretty personal so if you love to travel and aren't independently wealthy this is the place. Ask questions, share resources and tips, keep the self-promotion to a minimum.
