Let’s not send a few thousand people to Mars as a big experiment in survival.

The authors of the book in the article, Kelly and Zach Weinersmith, were also on an episode of Factually. Between this article and that episode, I'm pretty down on any cool scifi future in space.

In 2009 a giant star 25 times more massive than the sun simply vanished. OK, it wasn't quite that simple. It underwent a period of brightening, increasing in luminosity to a million suns, just as if it was ready to explode into a supernova. But then it faded rather than exploding. And when astronomers tried to see the star using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), Hubble and the Spitzer space telescope, they couldn't see anything.

When NASA crashed its DART spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos, the goal was to shorten the space rock's orbit around its parent asteroid. The mission succeeded - but Dimorphos' orbit has continued to shrink and it isn't clear why

There's a lot of trash on the moon right now—including nearly 100 bags of human waste—and with countries around the globe traveling to the moon, there's going to be a lot more, both on the lunar surface and in Earth's orbit.

While U.S. Space Force thus far has split National Security Space Launch (NSSL) between SpaceX and United Launch Alliance (ULA), the service plans to have one more provider by the end of NSSL Phase 3 to guarantee Space Force can reach high-priority orbits when needed.

Well, from the perspective of Earth. Obviously there's a big delay on the way here, which is kind of the entire idea of the technique used.

Plus, without reading the paper I'm not sure what "briefly" means. Even if it was a short spurt this is crazy, though.

NASA's Webb telescope spotted an active supermassive black hole that existed 570 million years after the Big Bang. That's really early.
