It's not that he's stupid. It's that he is banking his at-home credibility and authority on his success as an imperialist. So to him, to simply leave is not an option. It is the same as losing.

I think getting into this situation is stupid. Attacking a friendly neighbour is also stupid. Having to oppress opposition also indicates he's too stupid to face criticism and convince his people. I think a six grader could rule russia better.
