Okay, same question but change the pronoun to her. Wtf does her being a pilot have to do with anything?
My guess would be to add shock value to the article, since pilots are traditionally held in high regard. It's subtly mentioned that she's a private pilot though, so probably just a citizen with a pilot's license anyway.
