It's not true. The joke is that the 8 gets rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise which turns it into an infinity symbol.

Unless you're learning some really advanced stuff I've never heard of, no I'm pretty sure it's counterclockwise as that's the direction angles are measured on a unit circle.

I was just visualizing it in my head, but now I realized I had put imaginary on x and real on y. My coordinate system was flipped.
