The thing about Australia is that all the things that kill you on land are small and sneaky and will run away from you. There are no large predators. Crocodiles are all up north and easy to avoid. Shark attacks are rare and there are nets for the jellyfish, also up north. Meanwhile the US has bears that can open doors, come into your house and eat you alive. I think this is why they have guns and we don't, although I have no doubt that someone has taken a shotgun to a huntsman at some point and I don't blame them.
